Well, let's move on and perhaps when you are not on duty, you can use search. In the meantime, I wish a happy new year to you, your patients and everyone on this board.

I am running WM 10 and Fairuse4wm is no longer working for me. I tried following the instructions that were posted but no luck. I do not see WM as a running service. Was that step only for Wm11 users?

My question is, is there any way of removing DRM protection from a file you don't have a licence for?

A common misconception here seems to be that "people won't tell you how to do this because it goes against fair use". Although that is obviously a consideration, the main problem with it is, you NEED the license in order to be able to decrypt the file. If you don't have the license, you can't get the key to decrypt the file with.

panarachy: try running as administrator or launch fairuse4wm directly.

does any one have a valid link to milotis's fix? I have tried to replace most of the wmplayer 11 rtm files with 11 beta 2 ones and fixed the registry version number settings (there are around 5 places where it stores the current version number) but every time I reindividualize it gives me ibx version 6000. i thought his fix avoids rolling back to version 10 and reinstalling the beta.

i also wrote a program to switch media player components, the dllcache files and the registry version numbers of wmplayer.exe, wmp.dll, and wmploc.dll if any1 is interested. So now i can easily switch from wmp 9 - 11 and anything in between. (7 doesn't work yet but i'm trying...)

Your path to the FairUse4WM.exe is invalid (you are using the default) You have to use the select button and point it to the correct location of the fairuse4wm.exe. FairUse Commander is only a front end tool that calls FairUse4WM.exe and does some file renaming.

That's because you don't have a licence! You have a trial of a service. You need a licence to UnDRM the tunes.

Enjoy listening to the 1,000 songs. While you are doing so, may I ask you to carefully read and understand rule 6 please?

If you don't have valid license, you're at the wrong place and need to contact the company where you bought your songs from. And you need to familiarize yourself with our forum rules, especially rule 12 and 6 or your stay here will be very shortlived.

It doesn't work in Windows Media Player 11.
(ver. 11.0.5721.5145) It is not beta version.
What can I do?
It can't open the wma film to find the DRM, so it doesn't work.

I've purchased music from Yahoo! -- purchased, not rented, at the full $0.99/song rate -- and would like to remove the protection from those songs so I can back them up onto CDs or play them on my other networked computers.

I've actually been following this thread since late November. With due respect to the moderators (who I saw chew on the doctor who posted previously), this thread is now so incredibly cluttered, and filled with conflicting advice, that it's worse than useless -- it's downright confusing. Trying to follow all that conflicting advice has eaten up hours and hours of my time, and it's not done me a bit of good. It's just made me very, very frustrated. I don't mean to seem whiny, but if the point of this thread and these forums is to actually HELP people, it's not doing a very good job right now.

I realize it's an imposition upon the patience of the more technically savvy readers here, but I have an earnest request:

Could someone write a reply on this thread -- or, if the moderators think it appropriate, start a new thread -- with a detailed, from-scratch explanation of how to remove the protection (including links to such software, like FairUse4WM, as updated or patched, as is needed)? Please assume that your reader (like me) is starting with Windows Media Player 11.0, with all updates to it, fully installed.

Thanks in advance to any white knights who have the technical ability and the patience to respond to my request.

oldshark1957, sorry I can't help fix this mess of a thread. Do note you can burn your purchased Yahoo! music to CD without any hacking. The license allows that. The songs will have no DRM after that. You can also play Yahoo! DRM music on multiple PCs... at least 3, if I remember. The license allows that, too. You'll need to login to Yahoo! Music on the other PCs and it'll load the license when it needs it.

Please assume that your reader (like me) is starting with Windows Media Player 11.0, with all updates to it, fully installed.

The problem is not one of patience, it's the simple fact that because of all the many different configurations of Windows PCs out there, the one-size-fits-all approach does not always work.

Since you have all the Windows Media Player updates installed, you would need to check if Yahoo Music will allow you to redownload songs, because the "roll-back" procedure that you would need to perform will destroy any existing DRM licenses you have (not just music but video too).

The reason why this roll-back procedure is needed is that the current version of FairUse4WM (1.3fix) does not support the latest version of Microsoft's "Individualized Black Box DLL" (referred to in this thread as "IBX" for short). This file is the critical system file which handles the encryption and decryption processes involved in Microsoft's DRM. A few forum posters here have discovered a method whereby they can obtain an older IBX by replacing certain Windows Media Player files with older versions. Unfortunately this seems to be a hit-and-miss process as not everyone has been able to get it to work. Also, because this file is individualized, you cannot simply download a copy of it from someone else, you have to obtain it via the proper individualization process which takes place on Microsoft's web site, otherwise it simply won't work at all.

I personally do not have any experience with the roll-back process since (so far at least) I haven't yet been forced to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11, and consequently I still have IBX version 11.0.5497.6285. If you wish to determine your own IBX version, you can follow these steps:

1. Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View tab.
2. Check "Show hidden files and folders".
3. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files".
4. Load Windows Explorer.
5. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM.
6. Right click Indivbox.key (may also be called Indiv001.key or Indiv002.key or something - pick the one with the highest number if so) and choose Properties.
7. Click the Version tab.

Your IBX version number will be displayed at the top. If it is 11.0.6000.6324 or higher then you will need to perform the roll-back process and hope it works for you. If not, then either FairUse4WM 1.3fix or FairUse4WM 1.3 should work for decrypting your files.

FairUse4WM itself is pretty self-explanatory... it is presented in a wizard style format and supports both dragging and dropping of files and also passing filenames on the command line. The first time you use it you will need to recover your DRM keys, but after that, unless for some reason your IBX gets upgraded or you have to reindividualize, it will remember them and go straight to the file chooser dialog.

hey guys, i have a strange problem. Fairuse4m normally works great here. I used it for *.wmv and *.wma files. But now, i got some kind of different .wmv file. The license for this movie isn't saved anymore; everytime i play this movie, the license is aquired again.

This has never happened before, normally the files are aquired once and then saved. With this "new" type of .wmv file, fairuse4wm says that there is no valid license found...

Danj, thank you for the clear instructions and comments. I'm IBIX version 11.0.6000.6324, and I'm unwilling to risk losing my existing DRM licenses.

Yahoo!'s Jukebox is supposed to allow you to stream audio from the computer on which the purchased song was downloaded to another networked computer. But you have to disable the target computer's firewall, and even then I'm still getting the crippleware 30-second versions of the music used as teasers on Yahoo!'s website. When I emailed their customer service, the reply was prompt: I should turn up my volume or turn off my mute. Duh. One of those responses that leaves you wondering whether they're idiots or they just think I am. (Probably both.)

I had tried copying my downloaded .wma files to one of my networked computers and trying the roll-back procedure on it; heeding the FairUse4MW 1.3 warning, I had also downloaded one new song directly to that computer so it would have one working DMR license. But although the rolled-back WMP ver. 10 seemed to work fine, I still couldn't get FairUse4MW to work.

So I guess I'll sit tight and hope for a FairUse4MW ver. 1.4 someday. Thanks again for the time and effort you put into your reply -- I'm sure it will be very useful for other folks as well!

A license to play is limited and you do not own the content - you have merely rented it.

Whetehr you own the DVD or not is irrelevant. The content in question is not a DVD file but a WMV.

As well, I assumed nothing - I asked you. You responded with profanity which is why you received the strike. Further resposes in this vein will incur another strike, which sadly, will lead to suspension.

This was covered earlier in the thread, but I'll recap.

Typically, physical media with WMV files will use 1-play licenses so you access their server every usage.
Fix this by setting Windows Media to prompt for license acquisition. WM will get the license and wait for you to click "[Play]". If you don't click "[Play]", the license isn't consumed and other programs can use it.

This is not the case of Terminator 2 wmv HD. If you have the DVD in your drive, you will get a 6 day license (you must connect from USA or use a proxy).

@tjf

It doesn't take much to confuse me - and I'm confused about the "Terminator 2" discussion in this thread.

Is this a purchased DVD that contains both the normal (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs) resolution movie and a high res, .WMV version of either the entire movie or a portion of it?

Or is it strictly a purchased WMV/HD version?

(Or is it the little 2 minute clip that's freely available for download from Microsoft at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx )

JarrettH
13th January 2007, 03:04
It has the special edition on disc one and wmv files of the HD version (720p I think) on disc two. The wmv files have DRM.

How do you use this program anyway? Maybe it doesn't work for me because like you guys said my license is not stored on my system. Recover keys does nothing for me. I only ever looked into this program to remove DRM on this movie.

I think discussion of T2 HD is important because I have never seen DRM successfully stripped from it. No one seems to be able to back it up reading at avsforum and topics at doom9.

setarip_old

@JarretHIt has the special edition on disc one and wmv files of the HD version (720p I think) on disc two. The wmv files have DRM.Thanks for clarifying.

If that's the case, applying the logic we've all used to justify ripping DVDs, it would seem to me that if I purchased that two disc DVD set, I'd be equally entitled to rip both the standard version and the HD version contained in the purchased set - it's just a matter of different copy protection schemes...

tjf
13th January 2007, 08:43
Neither of which display you have bought content for your own use and benefit absolutely for all time. Only to play.

I don't agree. If I bought the WMV HD DVD then I have right to watch it whenever I want. However the DRM restricts me: there is a need of internet connection, USA location, installing very buggy software (InterActual) and working license servers.

Two years ago, long before FairUse4WM I copied it to my HD. It was quite difficult process which I described here (http://archive2.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5556628&&#post5556628). But I bet with FairUse4WM it must be much easier.

You need to download and use the 11-27 fix. You have too new of a version of the IBX. The 11-27 fix rolls back WMP 11 to WMP 11beta. Look for the file in the thread (it is here) and follow the instructions therein.

I have around 1200 protected WMA files, and I noticed that when I have tried to select all of them, fairuse4wm crashes. I assume that the error has something to do how many files I am selecting, but to my knowledge the limit on selecting files in most programs is around either 16,000 or 32,000. I know that the 32k limit is true in VB and C. Is there any way to get around that limit, such as loading the file list from an external source (txt or otherwise)?

Yes, all 1200 songs are bought, not rented. The DRM is not a problem since my IBX version is older, and is v11 beta.

I just got done doing ALOT of searching, and I have only managed to frustrait myself! I rolled my WMP11 back to WMP10, and downloaded FairUSeWM 1.2 (fix) I encountered a different problem however.

1. I click on Recover Keys, and I get a screen that says:
Attempting to recouver DRMv1 keys

FairUse4WM will use a WM-Installed DLL to determine system specific information.

"DrmClien.DLL" has version 10.0.3802

2. So I click "Ok" and get this message:
This program will freeze until Media Player exits. You may have to close Media Player manually if it runs longer than a minute.
"Indiv01.key" has version 11.6000.6324

Please close all Media Player windows!
Click OK what you are ready to proceed

3. So I close out of WMP and anything else, and hit "OK"

4. Then I get a winow that pops up that says: "Choose a licensed Windows Media file that has a working license..." Sooo, i proceed to do and select a Licensed Windows Media Player File in My Music...

4. Then Windows Media Player pops up, and says its trying to open media... I wait, and wait, and wait, and nothing happens...

5. I try and close out of WMP, and FairUse crashes "freaks out, and quits responding" I have done this with multiple WMP Licensed files, and I get the same result.

6. If I leave WMP open as I select a file to "Recover the Key from" I get an error that says:

Unable to recouver private key

Unhandled situation -9000 while Creating Windows Media instance.

Retry Cancel

7. So i click Retry, and it brings me right back to the "Recovering Unique Identifiers" window

Any help is greatly apreciated! Im new to this all, so if im doing something stupid, I dont intend to:p

Rolling back WMP 11 to WMP 10 won't work. Here is a link for the file I told you about:
http://www.f-forge.com?d=dP4ISM53KQGfjvR96eBH

Follow the directions therein and you should be fine. Also, you should be using version 1.3fix. You can get that here: http://www.f-forge.com/?d=zZvpPERaUnIOFjwX7AW4

Also, please note that this process deletes your licenses. You will need to reacquire them. The usual way to reacquire them is to just play them in WMP and you will be prompted to download the license.

I am trying to use this fairuse4wm1.3 and when I attempt to load my liscence I get an error message stating that I do not have any IBX Components. I have Windows mediaplayer 10 and have tried this on another computer of mine without any problems. Is there any way that I can get the required IBX components?

You must be doing something wrong mountainbikeextremist, because it shows that you still have the wrong version (11.0.6000.6324 and up is unsupported). Follow all the steps outlined in WM Fix.zip and you will be fine. I couldn't find step 3, but I followed all the other steps and it still worked for me. There really is nothing more I can tell you.

I just got done trying again, and still the same error. I know if following the directions correctly. I went back to the DRM folder, after i had deleted everything, and did the upgrade through the link provided, and it tells me that my IBX number is the same. Maybe the link provided isnt giving me the the right IBX #?

I also have done the rollback many times but fear that when we reindividualize it gives us the latest ibx version.

ok this is what I did and worked for me a month or so ago (hope I got this all right):

This is what microsoft suggests:
Rolling back to a previous version of the Player
Windows Media Player is a feature of the Windows operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, in Windows XP, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was previously on your computer.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to perform the following procedure.

1.
Disconnect any portable music or video devices that might be attached to your computer.
For more information, see Issues with devices after removing Windows Media Player.
2.
In Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
3.
At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box.
4.
In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Player 11, and then click Change/Remove.
5.
In each of the two confirmation dialog boxes that appear, click OK.
6.
When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Restart.
7.
In Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
8.
At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box.
9.
In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then click Change/Remove.
If you installed a non-US English version of Windows Media Player 11, the instructions in the dialog boxes that are mentioned in steps 9, 10, and 11 might appear in English.
10.
In the first confirmation dialog box that appears, click OK.
11.
In the second confirmation dialog box that appears, select the Do you want to continue with the rollback? check box, and then click OK.
12.
When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Restart.
13.
In Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
14.
Click Microsoft User-Mode Driver Frameworks Feature Pack 1.0, and then click Remove.
15.
Follow the instructions that appear in the Software Update Removal Wizard.
If the Wudf01000 confirmation dialog box appears, click Yes to continue. When the software removal process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Finish.

Download the roll back fix, delete everything in your DRM folders (make sure you are showing all hidden files and all microsoft protected files) and make sure you follow all directions in the roll back fix but do not copy the windows media player & runtime folders until after you do this:

GOTO ->
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallwmp11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

after the rollback is complete... a restart might be required... then afterwards...

C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallWMFDist11$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

restart.

Now copy the two windows media & runtime folders into your program folder. Now play a licensed file or go to ezdrm and try out a file and it will update to to the previous ibx version so fairuse should now work.

Try running with the FairUseCommander front end. For such a large amount of files it should invoke it's batch limiting code (if the batch feature is enabled) which may work around this problem (it will result is several calls to FairUse instead of just one to keep it under the 32k character command line argument length). If that still doesn't work you can disable the batching completely and it will call FairUse via command line 1200 times. It won't be pretty but it will get the job done.

blutach - you need to keep in mind though, that if you use the URGE trial, the songs you downloaded after that trial is over STILL play, even when the trial has ended and you have not purchased a subscription, so you need to know that URGE is different from the rest of the subscription/trial services.

the license is forever to play which is the same as the bought music from other services, so if you use URGE subscription to download you OWN, wheras other services make your music unplayable when your subscription ends, so URGE downloads are the same as owning since the licenses work indefinately even after cancelling or ending the trial.

The problem a lot of people are having is the WM11 redistributible. I had the latest version of WM11 on both of my PC's and tried everything and it wouldn't work until I figured out I had to uninstall the WM11 redistributible along with WM11. Go into your windows folder and look for the WM11 uninstall as well as the WM11 redistributible uninstall. Run both. This will revert you back to WM10 or WM9 depending on what you had previously. Then you can delete your license files as described. Don't bother going to the windows website to generate new licenses. Just go to www.oldapps.com and download WM11 Beta. When you install the beta, it will give you the old WM11 redistributible at the same time and generate your license files. You can then buy a song from Walmart.com and play it once and then extract the Walmart.com keys with fairuse4wm. I've done it on 3 different PC's now without any problems (all of them had the latest WM11 on it). Keep in mind that the minute you delete your old license files to generate new ones, any content you had locked to those keys will no longer be playable or extractable. This will only work on new files you purchase.

I have done this a few times over the last week but it seems that MS has put in a catch when installing an older version. It says that there is a problem with the install and asks you to download from their site. I have successfully rolled back the WMP11 but I can't get my old player to work. It crashes when I try to play a movie.

Hello!

Does someone know if fairuse4wm is working on Windows Vista?

WalterK
20th January 2007, 16:21
i doubt it will work in the final version of Vista since that ships with the Final version of WMP11.
And who knows MS may have blocked any tampering with drm files on the software lvl as they have done wth blu-ray and hd-dvd playback.

We will just have to wait and see.
The best bet for folks who want to remove drm and don't want the headache of rolling back software or deleting folders is
1)To create a streamlined install disc of XP using Nlite.
2) Use Vmware server or another virtual pc emulator.
3)Install your streamlined version of XP in that environment and use THAT as your music/movie purchase pc.

Never update to wmp11 final use the last beta beta 3 i believe, and until wmp11 final becomes the default player just use fairuse on the virtual environment and transfer your drm free media over to your real pc with good old networking.

I try everything in the book still couldn't get it to do it.
so, I redo my PC from an image file that I created with WM 10

So, my suggestion is roll it back to WM 10 and wait till they come out the one that will work with WM 11 then upgrade it to WM 11.

IBX stands for individualized blackbox component. This deals with DRM. I have that same version as you "it is the newest, and WILL NOT work with the latest FairUse. Hopefully someone can help me. I am using Windows MCE and am recording movies for later viewing. This really urks me because I am in no way trying to pirate movies I just want to view the movies I have recorded.

I have tried running FairUse4WM but it does not give me the option to select a DVR-MS movie. I have also tried DVR2WMV to convert the DVR to a WMV file so I could use FairUse4WM but the program just hangs and doesnt convert the file.

Could someone please help?

Hello, for those of you that have tried the new fixes and so forth with version 1.3, these fixes (After you visit microsoft site for the DRM update for IPX or what it is which will give you version 11.0.6XXX.XXXX ) will no longer work. If you have the old 11.0.5XXX.XXXX version you will be fine, but make sure you have automatic updates off for WMP11 turned off - you are one of the lucky ones. Other than that the rest of us will have to wait for the next new version of FU4VM to come out, if there is a possibility of it happening.

yeah, in the media player there is an option to add protection. it is on by default, so you have to disable protection in your options. it will say "are you sure" like ms software ALWASY does, and you just say yes or ok

I am using Media Center's guide and future programming capabilities to record the television shows/movies I want to see later. I dont think there are any options to disable protection; I think they are being DRM'd during the broadcast somehow.

I have also tried to convert the DVR-MS file directly to a WMV file according to the previous post without luck. The conversion program (Digital Media Converter) locks up after less than a minute into the conversion which is similar to other conversion methods I have tried. I think this has something to do with the DRM copy protection.

Again, this is extremely frustrating and I think I should be able to play my recording on any of my computers and portable devices. If anyone else could give me some more insight it would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if updating Urge to get the Automix update kills FU4WM? In other words, does it update the IBX while it's messing with the rest of Urge and WMP?

I know that creating an account updates the IBX, but does adding your financial information alter anything?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Please do not use this program with subscription content (it's in the rules). Subscriptions are already fairly priced as they are. The purpose of this utility was to free purchased content (the kind that you buy for $.99 or $10 per album, etc.), and using it with a subscription furthers the belief that we are stealing. That being said, FU4WM doesn't depend on the version of Windows Media Player, but on the version of its DRM code.

You most likely have a version greater than .6 (see other posts in this forum), and hence it has stopped working for you. Or, there could be a few problem files that FairUse isn't converting (I have about two or three that it says are not licensed to me, but play fine in WMP). In the former case, there's not much you can do except pray for an update or try MilOtis' rollback (which has had varied results). If other files are converting (try using a sample, also found in other parts of this thread), you can contact Napster and see if they will allow you to re-download your purchased media.

Good luck!

I think I will just wait for 1.4

One of the results of Microsoft's suit against Viodentia was that he sort-of went into hiding. We also haven't heard much from MonkeyBoy in a while, so the prospects aren't looking good of ever seeing a 1.4. It seems that the best solution to someone who has a newer version of the IBX is to use MilOtis' rollback, which, I understand, may not work anymore (as the individualization site apparently gives people the newest version). Too bad...

I've got DRM version: 11.0.5744.6324 and Indiv Version: 2.5.0.0 on my Vista machine, but FairUse4WM says

IBX components do not appear to be present and No "drmclien.dll" found in path

I've reindividualized a couple of times but no luck (strange that doing this didn't increase the DRM version). When I go to the DRM folder there is no indivbox.key.

Vista also stores the DRM folder in C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\DRM or C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\DRM so maybe it is a path problem with Vista. (c:\Documents and Settings is a JUNCTION now)

I can't uninstall WMP11 because it's built into the OS...

maybe MS did a fix for Vista or fairuse was not built to operate correctly in Vista.
If you still have your XP install disc build a virtualmachine with VMware and use that to remove drm just don't update to wmp11 final no matter how many times it begs for it.
Instead installl wmp 11 beta 2 or 3 if your drm file demands you upgrade.

As a first time poster - hello.

Well fortuantly - I stumbled across this site a while back and found this program which works beatuifully! I download music from various places now on the web from 2 differnt machines. Unfortunatly after using the program on one PC for a while - then decided to see if Windows had updates for me. I di not check here first for all the problems with WM11. Now one mchine is out of commision for the downloads. I do hope that 1.4 will come - but like 1 has said, we may not hear from the writer for a while. Which is sad that companies will allow us to pay for music, but only hold us to listening on that 1 PC or a specific prtable player. I for one have a PC, but use an iPod, but download wma's. Its sad that a monopoloy has occured with Microsoft as well with Apple. The music industry should be the ones to step up and let consumers of their purchased product enjoy the music they legally purchased and downloaded on any player they so choose. If they are worried that one person would download it and then share it with others for free, its the same worry as when 1 purchases a CD and makes copies for others as well.

Anyway. Great program!!!

Its not like I didn't pay for napster in order to download the songs, its part of my technology fee that I pay here every semester which totals to about $100 including everything else. The only reason I like to use Fairuse is that I can't get any of my songs from napter on to my mp3 player. Also, I like having my songs in mp3 style. Ill look for that rollback technique but I dont have time to mess with it now. I guess I have to wait for a new version if there will be one. I mean after my years at college are done, my napster subscription will not work anymore, so then I won't be able to continue to hear those songs, let alone keep them.

This is with windows media player 10. And I'm not doing this with all my music, i myself bought some songs that were not available with the subscription. And these are the ones I want to put on my mp3 player...only about 20 songs cuz the rest of my library was deleted when I formated my HD.

Selayan, save yourself some grief... if it's only 20 tracks just burn it to Audio CD and rip to back to unprotected MP3. For that, I can't see much advantage to using "fairuse4wm" since your goal is to convert it to MP3 anyway.

By the way: Napster protected subscription stuff does work on many mp3 players from Creative Labs, Sandisk, iRiver, etc.

Selayan: burning drm'd tracks to a cd and ripping them is not nearly as easy as it sounds. WMP has a built-in mechanism to prevent just that, but I recommend you use Audacity to unencrypt your tracks (link (http://www.zuneboards.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,28/topic,1302.0)). They will be of a lower quality, but they shouldn't be too much lower, as it will be recording from your speaker output (another, more expensive/complicated [yet easier] method is to use TuneByte). Good luck.

sonicbox: The DRM used by Napster works only with PlaysForSure compatible players (what this tool is intended to remove). I personally use Urge, and there are two options: one that allows you to take the content with you on a portable player (for $15 a month) and the other which doesn't ($10 a month). Please remember though that this software is intended only for use on purchased media.

tdudetyler: The latest FU4WM is the version 1.3 fix, which is not compatible with your version of Windows Media Player (and it seems that there are issues with MilOtis' rollback on Vista). Sorry, I guess you're SOL. In any event, most, if not all, of the sites that offered FU4WM for download have been taken down. Sorry...

Is there any way to get key information from one PC to carry across to another with the FairUse program, so I can read the key on one PC and use it on another? Blutach,
I apologize if my question is inappropriate; I just thought someone could tell me how to remove DRM from my DVR-MS files. Earlier someone had told me that you could convert the DVR-MS file to a WMV file first using Digital Media Converter but all the converters I tried including this one locked up after a few seconds; I would assume due to the DRM'ing. It just seemed that this might be possible already with the software and that someone could tell me how; your post was actually the first time I was told that the software could in no way do this.

Steve Jobs just announced that he wants all DRM to end
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/

And Bill Gates announced a few months ago that consumers are better off the CDs because DRM is too cumbersome.

This means Viodentia needs to come back and make FairUse4WM 1.4. to fix all these new IBX numbers.

With this new Wal-Mart store we need a way to strip DRM off of purchased movies and move video around.

What I see from that "Steve Jobs just announced that he wants all DRM to end" article is that Apple had enough of the big music producers imposing the rules and having the upper hand. Just like that article says, Apple has to provide those companies both the tech specs of their drm system and the guarantee that in case the system is compromised they will patch it up quickly or face immediate withdrawal of rights to sell that copyrighted material (and I also imagine they'd have to give "compensation" to the music companies as well).

So, the music sellers have the tech secrets that they can reveal to someone else and make Apple pay for "drm system breach" and also the right to withdraw their copyrighted material from sales if Apple does not comply. No wonder Apple doesn't like it. This is like selling yourself as a slave and keep your mouth shut hoping that your work as a slave for the rich master will earn you so much that it would compensate while your master can cut your head off anytime he pleases. But now that the music companies are facing troubles with low sales of CDs while iTunes on-line service is successful, Apple is planning on rebelling against their masters, or at least using this opportunity to negotiate better terms.

You can also see they approach this problem in a round-about manner: "Much of the concern over DRM systems has arisen in European countries. Perhaps those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free". In other words: "you are asking us to remove DRM ? (see the recent Norwegian court decision), then force those companies to remove DRM". A nice method to threaten the music companies, isn't it ? It's not us (Apple) that asks you this, the EU legislators will impose this on you !

Apple is not happy to give up on DRM one inch... they know that if this happens, their sales will go down as well. What they would probably like is for such music giants to intensify their lobbying efforts and make the EU adopt stricter copyright laws. Let the music companies and the EU law makers battle themselves, and with a bit of luck (lots of grease money), the law will bend.

Who thinks this is done out of sympathy for the poor end consumer is a naive chump.

They are most likely full of spyware or viruses. I am sure that if there was a real 1.4 it would have been posted on here by someone or other. To be honest I wouldn't have thought anything is likely happen on the fu4wm development front until the lawsuit against viodentia runs out of steam, and with the US legal system being what it is that could be a long long time. I have napster, and pay for the service. I have for months. the DRM is killing me because my cars cd player is old and doesnt support drm.
How is that different from people using this to listen to music in their ipod?
I have a cd player in my car that can play mp3/wma cds. Instead of burning 10 cds, I want to burn just a few cds full of wma files (as in not like a regular cd) to bring the music with me and listen to it in my car.

The problem these companies see is:

If it can be gotton around,IT WILL BE ABUSED TO RIP THEM OFF!!!! (Thats what they dont want)

It does make it EXTREMLY HARD for an innocent person to do what they would like with thier media, but they are looking at the bottom line.....So if your CD player doesnt support DRM,you need to use a sound recorder and make a basic copy, then transfer it to CD... (Which should play fine)

Good luck!

tastyratz
14th February 2007, 15:43
oh absolutely, I realize the purpose of drm, as well as what the "big four" thinks of people who use fairuse. Im sure they would prefer i purchased a copy for my home cd player, a copy for my car, and pay to download a copy for my computer. Maybe even just send them the money for nothing in return but the blessings of the kind souls who run the place.

I realize there are other ways to copy media, such as sound recorders (aka tunebyte, etc.) ....
however re-recording media in an analog fashion results in a loss of quality... Ive done it, Ive heard it. It sounds damn close I know... however to do that you have to make sure you pick a higher bitrate than it was recorded in to maintain alot of the original information. This results in larger files that sound worse. Otherwhise I would have turned these all into mp3's a long time ago.

My issue is directly with the use of fairuse4wm

tastyratz, no car CD player "supports DRM" -- old or new. Sorry, but your Napster content doesn't allow what you want to do. Since you "pay for the service" and have been doing it for "months", I must assume you are using the subscription service.

Invest in a portable MP3 player from Sandisk, Creative Labs, iRiver, etc. (all subscription service compatible) and use it in your car. It's more convenient than Audio CDs and files on a Data CD. I can't even imagine using a CD player anymore. (Regretably... If you don't have an AUX jack or equiv., a cassette adapter or FM trasmitter is the only option until you upgrade your car deck.)

4dude, if you purchase content from any of the services there is no need to "use a sound recorder and make a basic copy, then transfer it to CD.." -- you can burn audio CDs directly. (FYI: I agree DRM is stupid for purchased content. Why do it, when you can burn a DRM-free Audio CD with it?)

tastyratz
14th February 2007, 19:35
sonic: That doesnt really help me. I know I can go out and buy something thats drm compatible. I dont want to pay alot of money I dont have, for a device I dont want to fiddle with in the car and get into an accident rigging it to work. My cd player works great, and thats how I intend to use it.

If I wanted to go spend more money to do the same task I would do it and wouldnt be here asking the question I did...I mean I dont wanna come off like a jerk but its not helpful to my question.

blutach
14th February 2007, 21:56
@tastyratz - I am not sure what level of service you have paid for - but it is clear that you do own own the music. Sonicbox's comment is pertinent - if you owned the music, you could burn it easily.

The subscription service is DRM'ed for a reason - you don't own the content. You simply may download it and play it on your PC (see their FAQ).

As such, removing DRM from the subscription content is against rule 6.

Let's stop it here, please.

Hi. Its been such a long time since we heard anything from Viodenta. I hope that great man is safe. I have an amazing problem which I am not been able to solve through any measures.
I downloaded a licensed wmv video from a subscribed website. I am using WMP10 and applied all the security patches. Now whenever I give it the username and password to install the license on my system, it gives an 'Internet Explorer Script Error', which says that a script error has occured and I should contact Microsoft support to solve the issue. I have upgraded my hardware and before the upgrade everything was working just fine with the licensed DRM stuff. Now this script error pops up every time the license installs itself and it never lets me PLAY the file at all.
Can someone tell me what sort of componant I am missing? Is it a common fault. Also, I ran WMP11 to solve the issue but the same happend in it so I rolled back. I have installed all the required updates to solve the said matter but to no avail. That Script error comes again and again and I am really frustrated.
Can someone please help me to solve the issue.

For me, I just tell the program to save the NODRM music files in the same directory as the DRM file. Afterwards, I just go into the respective directory and erase the original files and keep the NODRM file.

pplsfrntofjudea, Like You, I did not download the Commander when I first saw the link posted, then later I tried to search for it using the search function here but to no avail. I had to go back message by message to locate it. It appears that the reason we could not find it using the search function here is that the word "commander" does not appear in the particular post that contains the download link. The url for the download does contain the word, but the link is truncated on the post and therefore a search will not find it.

The Commander is great! Thanks to users UserMan and VivaFairUse4WM for Your efforts in creating and updating it!!!

I thought I would start up a dedicated support area for FairUse4WM on my site with what I have found to be a solution to get FairUse4WM working properly. Please help me out with the instructions and notify me if there is anything else that should be included, such as notices, ect...

I've speant a lot of time figuring this out and typing up those instructions, so do not post them anywhere else.

Please take a look http://www.xarus.net/index.php?act=fair_use_4_wm. Click on Instructions if you want to know how to get it working. If it doesn't work, I'll try to help you get it working in the support forum, but I think this should work for everyone. Enjoy :)

From what I understand, you can't really right now. There is no viable way that I know of.For now, just burn the purchased tracks to Audio CD. Now you have a physical (unprotected) backup of the audio content.

You can also re-download any purchased song anytime you want (unlike iTunes' Music Store), so there probably isn't much of a need to "backup."

ratmaster9
22nd February 2007, 01:41
I know what you are refering to, as I myself have a Zune. I purchased a few songs, only to find it was pointless.

The problem with the Zune software, is that it runs a program in the background as soon as the computer boots. You can disable it and delete the drm folder if you move fast enough, but when you open up the Zune software, it reinstalls the latest IBX... it was a pain to figure out that that was causing the problem with my IBX version...

I would recommend you find another service provider... as because Zune is a Microsoft Product, it will always be updated as it is their "example."

It's interesting... I recently decided to upgrade to WMP 11 because I was having some difficulties with the version of WMP I had. Strange enough, it upgraded to version 11.0.5721.5145. So FairUse4WM still works. I upgraded with the downloadable from Microsoft's website.

I think they are trying to get people to upgrade just out of annoyance...

I updated the download links to get the files on my site if anyone is wondering... I will try to always keep an up to date link in there so everyone can enjoy :)

I have a wmv file with some kind of DRM I'm not used to: every time I try to play it, WMP 11 says a license needs to be acquired, then I click OK and a "Media usage rights acquisition" dialog pops up, loading some webpage. Once the page loads, the Play button becomes enabled and the file plays normally. However, it makes me do this EVERY time I try to play the file... WTF? That file is important to me and I don't want to rely for playing it on the availability of some website that may go offline at any time. I can't even read the goddamn site as it's in Chinese, but I'd gladly pay for an un-DRMed version of this video. So, how do I deal with this?

Of course I own it. Did you even read the description in my post? I have permission to play it. The problem is that it wants to connect to that site every time I play it, though after that it plays fine -- no restrictions. Indeed, the DRM was tacked on by someone distributing the file which originally was not DRMed (because the main video is in English with Americans in it, with some Chinese advertisement junk added to the beginning of the video, same as the website it connects to to get a licence). But sine I've not tracked down the original, I'm stuck with this version modified by some tool trying to get more website hits.

I just purchased a song from Napster, and I cannot get the file to be unprotected. I've tried using the "recover keys" in FairUse, but the program doesn't show up any keys... then I actually hit the "recover keys" button and it says "click start to begin", so I do and I get this error "IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet." What does this mean? Does this mean I cannot undrm the file?

I have purchased wmv restricted files that required license, which I entered and they started running fine. However, when I tried to UnDRM them using the FairUse4WM program, I did not have much luck. The steps I followed are:

1. I Installed FairUse4WM 1.3 without any problems.
2. I opened FairUse4WM and clicked the “Recover Key” button (It says 0 Keys loaded”
3. I got the DrmClien.DLL has version 9.0. etc message, and when I pressed okay it went back to the first dialog box which says 0 keys loaded, and the only the Cancel button was still enabled (Exactlythe same window as in step 2).

As you can tell I am using WM 9, which should be okay. Moreover, my computer is running under Windows XP.

Next, upon getting help from an expert, I tried to individualize the windows player, and tried again. But now:

1. When pressing the Recover Key button, I got the following ,message: "Attempting to recover DRMv1 keys.....DrmClien.DLL has version 9.0.0.3250. Upon pressing Ok, I get
2. Preparing to launch Media Player ... Indivbox.key has version 10.0.0.3646.... When I press the OK button, I get
3. "Windows Error 80030002 while finding KID in V9 store".

It asks me to retry/cancel, but if I retry I go back to step 1 again.

I also got the following advise from the expert:
"Note that some WM installations will have multiple ECC key-pairs, so you will likely have to "Extract Keys" using multiple licensed files. If you find a file that doesn't convert, try extracting keys wth it. Once your whole set of keys is extracted, you will no longer need to run WM per file"
Some media files (wma/wmv) have a same KID and use a same SID. For example :

<KID>September Video</KID>
<SID>xxxxxxxxxxyyyyyyy</SID>

Above key pair valid for all media you download for september video.(just an example)

But maybe provider change/update the SID for another files that use the same KID, but with different SID as below

<KID>September Video</KID>
<SID>yyyyyyyyzzzzzzzzz</SID>

To solve the problem, try to recover key again and convert the file ALONE not multiple or batch. Indeed, I have several files (about 100) that are proteected under the same license key.

So Itried to perform the following steps on a single file:

- Set Windows Media player (WMP) to prompt on license acquisition
- Open the file, and let WMP acquire the license
- Do NOT click "Play", leave the WMP license window open
- While the window is open, use FairUse4WM on the file

but I got the messages I detailed earlier ("Windows error 80030002 while finding KID in V9 store").

So my question is WHAT ARE THE STEPS AND HOW TO EXTRACT THE KEYS??? When I only have one key!!!

Easiest thing to do would be to update to Windows Media Player 10 (NOT 11). Do not reindividualize any further, if you do then you will receive an IBX version that is not compatible with FU4WM. You can download Windows Media Player 10 from Microsoft's web site here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/2/A/12A31F29-2FA9-4F50-B95D-E45EF7013F87/MP10Setup.exe).

I don't mind going back to WMP11 beta, or whatever older version I need. My question is, I don't know the procedure for that type of DRM. FairUse4WM says that "At least one file with an active license is necessary." I don't even know what that means. Is a file that every time checks for a license when it's played and then loses it one with an active license or not? How do I do it in this case? If it retreives a license every time it's played, I'm assuming it goes away every time I close WMP. Then how can FairUse4WM extract it then if WMP is not still playing the file (yet it says WMP must be closed)?

Installed FairUse4Wm just fine but when i click on it it asks me to recover keys, i click on "recover keys" and it says that
"IBX components do not appear to be present." Then i click OK. Right after that, another thing pops up saying "FairUse4WM will use a WM-Installed Dll to determine system specific information. No drmclien.dll found in path." I click ok again and another window opens saying " unhandled situation -25100 while Getting DRMv1 Private Key."

I dont know much about computers so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks DanJ. I followed your advice, but WMP 10 when runs gives the following message:
"A security update is required to play this file. Do you want to download this upgrade?"

To which I replied NO. But then I got the following message from FU4WM

I made some improvements to UserMan's source code for his C# app. Mainly it will save your path settings, it will batch up calls to FairUse so it will call it 1 time for X files (in some cases it may have to make multiple calls to FairUse), allows you to specify a seperate output path, allows you to delete the original files (assuming you use the seperate output path), and has the option to keep or remove the NoDRM prefix.

Use at your own risk, if you find any issues (I'm sure there are some) post repro steps and if I get time I will try and fix them. Thanks again to UserMan for his source code, I would have never gotten around to doing this if it wasn't for his code to get it started.

Is there still no version that works on Vista?

No, and there isn't likely to be since Windows Media Player is a Protected Process under Vista and consequently would be much harder (although not impossible) to crack I imagine.

Has anyone else noticed a drop in sound quality after removing the DRM? I am sure the WMA does not sound the same with it removed as it did before it was removed! Can anyone else hear what I am talking about?

The only operation that is done on the file by FairUse4WM is the decryption, there is no re-encoding or lowering of bitrate unless you are using some program that converts your WMAs to MP3 or something like that. For example if you are unDRMing your WMAs then putting them on your iPod, yes there will be a drop in quality because iTunes automatically re-encodes them, since the iPod has no native WMA support.

Hey guys,

Very handy little app works like a charm.

Had to roll back to windows media player beta 2 tho to get it to work (obviously).

Problem I have now is that DRM WMV files, cause Media Player to freeze when they finish playing or if I press cancel on the aquired licence screen (before they start playing) which I do in order to get the licence for FairUse4WM as they are single run licence type files.
The un-DRM'd files seem to play fine, in windows media player and media player classic.
I dont recall this happening before I rolled back to beta2.
The only way to close WMP is to force quit the process in task manager.

Any ideas?

If they are single run licences, then it is saying you don't own the content - only a licence to play it once. Attempting to UnDRM such content is against rule 6.

9th March 2007, 00:22
Well the content is playable multiple times, it just needs to retrieve the licence each time. Not "single run" as such. I just didnt know what else to call it.

I didnt think it would be a problem to mention as viodentia mentioned how to get around it and that it would most likely be included in the next release of fairuse4wm.. therefore surely its not against rule 6?

I have been following this forum on an off since the beginning. It is so long now though and I have a very basic question that may or may not have been answered somewhere along the line, but I cannot find that answer with my current search thread ability. Here it is:

Now that a significant number of people are changing over to Vista or are buying machines that come preloaded with Vista, is FairUse4WM going to be updated to work with that OS and of course current versions os WMP11?

I have my made for Vista machine partitioned with a copy of WinXP JUST FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE of being able to run FairUse4WM. As you can imagine this is less than ideal, especially for a laptop user.

Again if this specific issue has been previously addressed, answered, etc. I am sorry, but I am very interested in the possibility of the creators of this most EXCELLENT piece of groundbreaking software for downloadable music subscribers to USE their music when where and how they want to motivate themselves to sove the VISTA issue, because then this would truely be one of the most important pieces of code written in the 21st Century!!!!

Thanx for your patience.

motivate themselves to solve the VISTA issue

Right, because there's really going to be a new version of FairUse4WM while there's an ongoing lawsuit searching for viodentia. Mm-hm. The discovery period Microsoft were granted was like 120 days, and that was starting in what, October, November last year? So you've got at least that long to wait, and then there'll probably be some further delays after that while Microsoft attempt to stop their case from fizzling out completely, so I wouldn't expect a new version of FairUse4WM until at least 2008 - if ever.

I read that reindividualization will install the lastest IBX which will make fairuse4wm not work. I read ratmaster9 instructions say to reindividualize using the link http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/indivSite. Will this install a IBX which will not work with fairuse4wm at this time?

I run vista, but I haven't tried fu4wm in there yet, although I do have a winxp partition anyway.

What happens when you try to run in vista? Does it give you an error message? What if you try running in xp compatibility mode?

I suggest if you don't want to have an xp parition, setup a virtual OS on your system under vista. MS PC 2007 is free and you can do it.

I have a number of WMA files purchased with DRM from a download service. I'm running RockBox on my iPod mini. I can load and play music I ripped myself just fine. With the un-DRMmed files, I may see the appropriate title information on-screen (or not), but the files will not play. They play fine in Media Player 10 and jetAudio.

Are the files corrupt in some way, and is there a way to repair them if so? Or, does the blame rest with RockBox?

@Harbinger:

Does Rockbox natively support wma's? I thought they either didn't, or did but spottily (as with other Free software, it's hard for them to work with wma). Have you tried to encode it to a different format, possibly mp3, aac, or ogg?

...but I am very interested in the possibility of the creators of this most EXCELLENT piece of groundbreaking software for downloadable music subscribers to USE their music when where and how they want toJermiahu, I know you are new, but please pay attention to the forum rules and what "fair use" really is. fairuse4wm is not a a tool intended for everyone to violate 'rental' subscription license & terms of service. You do not have the rights to keep subscription content and "use the music where and how you want to." fairuse4wm should only be used on content you have 'purchased'.

The_Harbinger, Rockbox doesn't support WMA "out of the box." However, someone did wedge in support using code from ffmpeg: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/4984 Not sure what the current state of it is, though...

Automate UnDRM 1.0 vs. FairUse4WM

I decrypted a single file using both programs. The output file of both programs have different filesize. Why is that? What's the difference? Is there any difference in quality between the two?

Does anyone know the last version of Windows Media Player 11 that wm4fu1.3fixed will work on?

11 beta 2

@bearshat: it runs on wmp11 final (hence the need for the "fix" version) up to IBX 11.0.6 (if you have 11.0.6 or greater, you can't run it). omjeremy is saying that the only way to have FU4WM work with wmp11 now is to use beta 2. Only wmp11 final users who have been "grandfathered in" (installed before the update to 11.0.6, and haven't updated since) can still use the tool.

I don't have much experience with Automate UnDRM, but I know that FU4WM's converted filesizes are *exactly* the same (at least on the kilobyte level). I don't know why they wouldn't be smaller, however. Maybe it's to fool the flag?

I had a v. 1.1 of fairuse4WM and I loved it so when I saw the v.1.3 was available I thought i would upgrade. Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to work properly. I continue to get the error message "IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet." when I try to retrieve new keys for my music. The message on the next scree says, "Attempting to recover DRMv1 keys. FairUse4WM will use a WM-installed DLL to determine system specific information. 'DrmCline.DLL' has version 10.0.0.3646" Pleas if anyone can help i would appreciate it greatly as I have tons of music waiting to go on my iPod.

Looking for site in order to download FairUse4WM1.3fix. Had my computer seriously crash last month and now I am pretty wary of downloading programs from unfamiliar sources or that use .rar file compression. Can anyone recommend a source for the program they have tried and found to be virus free?
Thanks.

I continue to get the error message "IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet."

Sorry but this means your iPod won't be seeing any songs any time soon because your Individualized Black Box DLL (IndivBox.key, the file that does all the DRM "donkey work") has been automatically updated by your music service to a version that's newer than FairUse4WM 1.3 can handle.

Just to sum up:
"IBX Version 11.0.6000.6324 isn't supported yet."
means
"IT WILL NOT WORK".

Some people have been able to "roll back" their Windows Media Player installations, with varied results, but any rollback procedure will destroy any existing licenses for downloaded music that you may have, so your music provider would have to allow redownloads.

The URGE music service does not autoupdate, nor does it force IBX updates...you can still download files today and play them, strip them with FairUse4WM provided you followed the fix I posted 3 months ago...guess what....? IT STILL WORKS

But you have to use URGE + FairUse 4WM...even 1.2 works if you have 11 beta 2. I can't speak for other download services like Rhapsody, Yahoo, Sonic, or Napster...I just know this works, so why not use it? URGE has pretty much everything.

Yup, Urge is nice, but paying each month becomes a hassle.

I've just started using Ruckus networks, its free legit music for college kids and the like. It has helped me explore new genres of music and entice me into buying things I would probably never heard before.
