From what ive read , Toshiba isnt really looking at the pc end of it and so far hasnt released a standalone PC drive. (There is a laptop with the drive in it, the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600) it comes with special oem playback software to play commercial hddvds
There are a few bluray drives out. Samsung SH-B022, Pioneer's BRD-101A, Sony's own BWU-100A. And maybe more but thats what i could find quickly. these are burners, bad thing is they dont come with 'real' playback software. you can play your own disks but not commercial bluray disks.
sony makes a laptop (Sony Vaio AR Premium) and a pc (RC300 desktop) that comes with a bluray burner and special oem version of playback software that can handle commercial bluray disks
Windvd and powerdvd will have bd/hd capable standalone software out by late 06, early 07

I think that Toshiba, NEC, hp, and Microsoft will be pushing HD-DVD drives just prior to or soon after the launch of Vista. Just a guess, though.
BD drives are out already, as has been stated, but you probably don't want to get one with media being so expensive, not to mention the sllloooowwww burning spead and the price of the drive in general.

You may be interested to know, the HD-DVD loader installed within the Toshiba HD-A1 is an NEC HR-1100A/TOS ;)

I think I'd prefer (as with all these new technology formats) to let the battle commence and wait for a victor or for the advent of the dual format drive........

When the nec drives are out for standalone sale they will probably cost the price of a hd-a1. so i suppose one could buy the hda1 and use the drive in their pc. if i do buy a hd-a1, i dont think i coudl stomach taking it apart however.
