View Full Version : Is this supposed to take 12 hours?

Sorry, I'm a newb at all this.

I recently became interested in backing up DVD9 -> DVD5 and have so far taken the time to re-encode Lord of War with CCE, 10 passes. Unfortunately it took about 12 hours. I went to sleep and woke up and it was still going :(

I have looked at a lot of simpler/faster tools like Nero Recode, DVDShrink, and Intervideo DVDCopy, and have heard mixed reviews on the quality. I wanted the end result to be as close to the original as possible, and it seemed like CCE was the way to go.

But it just takes so long. Is 10 passes too many? Is there a massive quality difference compared to a lower number? Besides that, is there a massive speed difference compared to using a smaller number of passes?

I am using CCE 2.7 and DVD Rebuilder Pro 1.04. My computer = P4 2.4GHz and 512MB RAM. I'm sure my older computer contributes to the slowness, but 12 hrs is still a very long time.

Well, i think with 10 passes that might be the right time.

because for me with 2 pases it takes about 2-3 hours.

I think 10 passes it too much, i usually do no more that 4 passes.

As for the quality, I very much dought you will see any difference.

I agree, 3 to 4 passes is plenty, and for the quality vs. time it's well worth it.

I always set dvdr-rb with a batch prosess of 2 or more dvd's and let it go over night. Use the auto shut down. You watch the moive, let the copmuter do the work uninterupted.

Anything over three passes is massive overkill and will show no measurable improvement in picture. For the vast majority of encodes no improvement will show for anything over two. 10 passes takes 5 times longer than 2...

Upgrade to the new version. There and been a whole lot of bugfixes since v1.04

Well I was basically going off of the nfos I got from downloaded DVD-Rs, usually the releaser is proud to state that he use CCE + 9~10 passes, so I figured it was the best way to go.

I don't have very good eyes, I can just barely tell the difference in quality when re-encoding with DVDShrink. Despite that I am very anal about the quality. If it's trye that anything past three passes is overkill, I'll believe you.

Is there any kind of visual comparison for me to look at?

(I looked at this (http://dvd.box.sk/articles8.php?stranka=1) comparison of various one-click programs and it made Intervideo DVDCopy out to be excellent, yet what I hear from other people is that it is not. I have trouble believing that I've made a nearly-perfect re-encode in less than an hour.)

The numerous passes (over 3) for CCE is more of a sales gimmick than anything worthwhile. In fact the CinemaCraft manual used to state that anything over 4 passes does nothing... but they removed it after v2.50.

DVD-RB v1.04? downloaded DVDs? nfos? release? ...
...that sounds as legal as rape.

Is there any kind of visual comparison for me to look at?yes, your own tests with your own eyes. do a small encode with 3 passes and the same one with, say, 7 (or 10) and see if you can spot a difference.
you will most likely see none.

So I'm not allowed to merely say that I have pirated material on my computer or what.

YES (http://forum.doom9.org/announcement.php?f=6) as jdobbs has already told you.
6) No warez, cracks, serials or illegally obtained copyrighted content! Links to content of a questionable nature, asking for, offering, or asking for help/helping to process such content in any way or form is not tolerated.

Yes I read that. I don't see how I broke that rule. I didn't link to anything, I didn't offer anything, I didn't ask for anything, and I didn't ask for help on how to process anything. Unless asking for advice on how to use which I may or may not legally own is against the rules...

You don't come onto a legitimate video site and start talking about illegal downloads -- you have to know that. Trying to defend that position is pointless.

Let's get back to discussing interesting and challenging video stuff and leave the pirate talk to the pirate sites. They're easy enough to find.

(Picture me putting on my moderator hat): End of discussion.
