Please I need help on this one!

Will converting my VCD .MPG files to DVD format decrease the quality (because of the reconversion or re-encoding process)? They're categorized as "great quality" and am not sure if it's original source was avi or mpg. Since I already know how to convert, author and burn that's all I really wanna know. BTW, they'll be viewed on normal 4:3 televisions with dvd/vcd players, but more importantly I wanna get the best visual experience possible whether it's VCD or DVD format and if it's DVD format I use ConvertXtoDVd or TMPGenc Xpress 3.0.

Here are the specs of the VCD .MPG files:

File : 222 MB (219 MB), duration: 0:22:18, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 56 %
Video : 183 MB, 1152 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD)
Audio : 35 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0]

Thanks a million in advance for your help.

By whom? Your statement indicates you did not create them yourself. You may want to re-read the forum rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), particularly #6.

You don't know or you don't remember.. think about your words before posting
No help if you don't legally own the material.

They're someone else's own home video of whom I personally know and have been given permission to use. The details are self-explanatory. Sheesh --- ya'll don't mess around. For a second there I almost thought you fellas were just being legalistic, but I'm just gonna give you guys the benefit of the doubt that you're just picking on me.

in answer to you question, you can author a DVD using the MPEG-1 and MP2 files.

so you can do both - have the convenience of DVD with menus, loads of space, etc, and not have to transcode the video (which will lose quality unless you perform some kind of restoration on it, in which case it'll lose precision but gain quality in a subjective way).

as for the rules, well, this forum walks a fine line, and doom9 doesn't want it shut down for the sake of some loose words. it's certainly nothing personal, though it can appear very blunt :)

Seriously, lately people've been interrogating me.

nothing personal, but my "loose words" do not clearly imply illegal activity, although it COULD imply something illegal but it's uncertain and the courts can't put words in my mouth either. When it comes down to it, the courts aren't gonna use "loose words" to present their case --- they're gonna use "tight, clear and precise words" that bluntly imply illegal activity. Would you use weak, "Loose" evidence or strong, "clear" evidence to shut down doom9?

But next time I'll make my original question clearer for you fellas.

"hakuna matata" fellas.

Afaik VCD files are not usable "as is" for DVD authoring. If I remember well, the GOPs are different.
Transcoding will decrease quality noticeably, since VCDs are already heavily compressed.
So I would recommend keeping your files as VCD compliant, as most DVD players play VCDs without any problem. VCD allows menus anyway so...

Sidenote:
I didn't know that normal users have moderator rights now -.-
I think, if their intentions were good, they would have contacted him by PM. It seemed to me more like they were shouting "Hey mods, there is a prey here, come and get it!"
