ok this is a guide thats gonna show you how to get your DVD onto to your windows computer in a format that your video iPod is able to view. i did a guide like this awhile ago but now im gona do it with a much quicker program and add screen shots. if u have a MAC try 'Handbrake' Ive heard its good.

NOTE: do not steal movies, iPod's or computers ;)

u will need:
- http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ - iTunes
- http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe - DVD decrypter
- http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/download.php - Videora iPod Converter
- http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html - iPod Video
- http://www.dell.com/ - computer that can read DVD's (does not have to be able to write DVD's, just read them)

NOTE: in the screenshots the DVD i am converting is "i, Robot"

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

1.0 - ok first we have to get the DVD files onto your hard drive...
1.1 - put your DVD into your DVD drive on your computer
1.2 - close any DVD player that pops up
1.3 - open DVD Decrypter, wait a second and click ok when the region screen pops up.
http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/6238/13qk1.png
1.4 - Go to Mode then select IFO. again close the region screen when it pops up.
http://img313.imageshack.us/img313/1039/12fa3.png
1.5 - under 'Input' on the right side of DVD Decrypter, one item should be highlighted that looks like this (the part in the red circle is the length of the movie, make sure that this is correct, it should be over one hour [01:00:00] for most movies). Also the item selected could be under any one of the VTS's, it does NOT have to be under VTS_03.
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/8637/14dh3.png
1.6 - OK, now go to 'Tools' then click 'Settings' and go to the 'IFO Mode' tab. Under the 'File Splitting:' option select 'None' then click OK.
http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/9603/16ty2.png
1.7 - Now under Destination click the browse icon and select where you to store the DVD files. (I recommend simply saving it in a folder by the name of the movie youre doing.)
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/7974/16qh1.png
1.8 - ok now just click the convert icon. for a 2 hour movie it should take appx. 15min.
http://img434.imageshack.us/img434/3167/17if3.png

2.0 - OK now were gonna get your DVD file into a format that iTunes and your iPod can read.
2.1 - once DVD Decrypter is done go ahead and open Videora.
2.2 - click on 'Setup' on the left. Then click Browse on the 'Output Videos to:' line, and select where you want that file to go. You can use the same folder as you did for DVD Decrypter.
http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/8598/21jo6.png
2.3 - Now click on 'Convert' on the left, then click 'Transcode New Video' and locate the file that you created in DVD Decrypter.
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/4581/25cv0.png
2.4 - OK! now click 'Start'. Also once its started transcoding you can change the 'Priority:' so that it goes faster. For my 2 hour movie, on high priority, it took appx. 30-45 mins.
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/6808/26ql5.png

3.0 - Now were almost done. all we have to do is inport the movie into iTunes and then onto your iPod.
3.1 - Open up iTunes.
3.2 - Go to file, then 'Add File to Library' Then find the file you made in Videora, click it, then click open. It should load right away.
http://img427.imageshack.us/img427/3483/32jz9.png
3.3 - Go to Video's, find your movie, right click on your movie, and click 'Get Info'.
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/8233/33pk9.png
3.4 - Go to the 'Info' tab and change the name to the title of your movie. Also i recommend naming the artist 'DVD' because then in your iTunes music folder all your DVD's will be in a folder labeled 'DVD' and also name the album the title of your movie unless if its a series like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, then I'd name the album the title of the series. Then click OK.
http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/7711/34lq5.png
3.5 - Plug in your iPod and let it update. if it doesnt automatically update then go to file 'Update iPod'
3.6 - Enjoy you own movies on your own iPod!
http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/2417/36uf7.png
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Space saving tip: to free up space on your hard disk go to where you saved the file from DVD Decrypter and delete that file, there should be 3 files you can delete: 'VTS_**-Stream Information', 'VTS_**_0.IFO', 'VTS_**_1.VOB'. this will free up appx 5-8 gigabytes of space. Just be sure not to delete the MPEG-4 Movie file, thats the one created in Videora and is used by iTunes.
Except you left out the bit on how to keep the correct AR using Videora. The image displaying a shot from the film shows the AR is not in proportion to the original. To keep the correct AR, you need to firstly find the AR of the film and then create a new profile in Videora. The default iPod profile will output to 320x240, which is a 4/3 AR.
how do i find the AR of the video?
chipzoller
15th August 2006, 23:03
In short, if it's widescreen the AR is 16:9 and if it's fullscreen it's 4:3. The simplest way would be to create a new profile in Videora for a generic widescreen AR of 16:9 rather than calculate the exact AR.
Personally, I recommend MeGUI for iPod encoding because you can encode in H.264, which yields much higher quality, but probably isn't the best choice for newbies.
hey thanks sooo much this is such a massive help. Just wondering if there was anyway to somehow transfer actual tv episodes, eg i have season 1 of prison break and is there any way to get the episodes individually onto my ipod or the only way is to have the disks on my ipod?
blutach
Step 1 shows you how. Each episode is in a PGC. Rip it separately.
There is also a guide to using MeGUI for all of this already written. The link should be in my sig.
hey phoebe664, yup i agree with blutach. just rip the individual PGC's one at a time, it may be a little time consuming but bear with it. the PGC should have the time next to it like in the screenshot in step 1.5 except the time for your episodes should be about 45 minutes or however long each episode is...
glad to help, let me know if you have any more questions
ii have noticed that on some dvd's when you Decryptthem it only has the audio commentry of the movie, and u only find this out after you convert it. does anyone know how to get just the normal movie?
blutach
Uusually, the audio stream to take is the 5.1. If you take the 2.0 stream, it is usually the Director's Comments.
If there are only 2.0 streams, one idea is to play the DVD in a software player and take note of which stream is selected.
Or like I do, decrypt everything and when creating a d2v project file have it demux all tracks, then play each track with media player classic (for example) to determine which track you want.
yeah, mvfc-4life, ive noticed that too on a few (i even converted one in french accidently once) pretty soon i'm gona add a step or two to check that u have the correct file to rip. unfortunately dvd decrypter isnt perfect when automatically selecting main movie pkg w/ the right audio.
Do I have to use Videora? I had it but when I changed videos to iPod format, the audio and the video didn't match up. Right now I have 3GP. Will that work or do I need Videora. If so, what can I do so the video and audio line up?
LARRYB
Have a same problem with the audio and video matching. Converted Da Vinci code and audio is trailing 10 seconds behind the video.
Any suggestions?
I am using a Ipod 30Gb
Larry
PS. Great program, easy to use and great instructions on the forum.
I tried again to convert a DVD to MP4. followed the instructions and again the audio was delayed about 10 sec from the video.
Any suggestions?
LARRYB, what you'll have to do with this one is to manually sync audio with video. This is what I had to do myself and it didn't take so long. Record the lengths of the audio and video file, then find the proper delay length based on those values (they should be the same length obviously). Then, when muxing both streams set your delay to the proper amount (usually in milliseconds).
Also, remember there are subtitles in this movie, and forced subtitles at that. There is a chance those too may have to be manually synched.
I think I found a $14.95 solution that will do all in one click.
-Using the 'Edit' button will cut down on the number of posts.
-You'll have to give us more info. on what and how you're using to convert these DVDs. I do this almost daily with hardly any complications, but Da Vinci Code is different because it employs many different protection schemes that makes ripping content difficult and error-prone.
Heard about a program at the following link:
http://www.ipodmediaselection.com/
Saw it in the store for more money and I'm going to give it a try. The DVD's I rip are run through DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink. I usaually only rip the movie and leave the rest alone.
The Davinci code was done in this matter but then the audio didnt sync up. Tried the Shrek and same thing.
This program sounds like it will do all I want. I also needed a program that converts from MP3 to CDA and others.
If you have DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) it can now encode to mobile formats. Check out our very active DVDRB forum.
I also am having issues with the audio delay. I noticed something strange after I ran the dvd through the DVD decrypter. When I set up DVD'D for no file splitting at text file was written to the folder that the IFO and VOB files were stored after the rip. The text file is as shown below:
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 5 / PTS: 00:00:00.028 / Delay: -100ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x480 (NTSC) / 16:9 / Letterboxed / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.128 / Delay: 0ms
If you notice the audio is delayed by 100ms. I dont think viedora is the issue I think it is the DVD'D program that is not syncing the two together. I looked in DVD'D tools and could not find any thing to do with audio delay.
Does anyone have a answer to this 100ms delay or how to fix it?
Larry
chipzoller
This is normal. DVD Decrypter reports the delay used in muxing the audio and video streams together. You'll commonly find an audio delay (negative or positive) when decrypting the files. Just apply that delay either 1) when encoding the audio track, or 2) when muxing audio and video streams together in your MP4 container.
LARRYB
29th December 2006, 22:16
That would be nice to do but Videora does not have a option to add delay to the file when converting to MP4. At least I could not find it.
Now I just re-ripped Shrek again and left all the audio tracks in place. When I look at the below text file it seems that the english audio track is not delayed but the subtitles are. I am ging to try to run this through Videora to see if the audio is in sync with the video.
0x20 - Subtitle - English - [SubPicture 01: Normal] / LBA: 61 / PTS: 00:00:01.281 / Delay: 1001ms
0x21 - Subtitle - Español - [SubPicture 02: Normal] / LBA: 62 / PTS: 00:00:01.281 / Delay: 1001ms
0x22 - Subtitle - Français - [SubPicture 03: Normal] / LBA: 63 / PTS: 00:00:01.281 / Delay: 1001ms
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 6ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 7 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0x81 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English / LBA: 8 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0x82 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / Français / LBA: 9 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0x83 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / Español / LBA: 10 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x480 (NTSC) / 4:3 / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: 0ms
I'll let you know
Larry
blutach
They look like 2 different disks - one reports starting at LBA 5, the other at 7.
Regards
LARRYB
30th December 2006, 01:04
They are to different disks. Only the last example was Shrek cd. As before it still has a delay even though the text file show 0ms delay.
It seems that no matter what file I try to rip DVD'D adds a delay to the audio when the file splitting is set to none
I re-ripped Shrek in file mode with 1gb files (normal operation). I was hopping that it would write a text file when done to see if it also delays the audio. In this mode it does not write a text file.
I guess I'm against a dead end. Was really hoping I could come up with something.
DON'T BUY THIS PROGRAM, IT JUST LINKS YOU TO DVD'D AND VIDEORA LINKS AND YOU NEED TO UPLOAD THEM.
It is the same as I have now. Also this guy is false advertising what his program will do.
