Google'ing around this morning I've discovered that BSPlayer (version 1.40+) is now bundled with spyware. This seems to be 1 or 2 months old already but I can't remember anyone pointing it out on the forum (nor did I find anything searching the forum with keywords "bsplayer" and "spyware" ;)).

Since BSPlayer is used by quite a bunch of people here, and since it's A/V related, I think it's a good thing to post this news here.

See what google has to say on the matter : http://www.google.fr/search?hl=fr&q=spyware+in+bsplayer&btnG=Rechercher&meta=

Hi,

It seems that first spyware version is 1.38. So I've installed v 1.37 and was trying mplayer (with any GUI) to replace it in the future.

If anyone still reads this, I've just stumbled across MPUI (in the software thread), which looks like a brilliant mplayer GUI :)

Although I personally have a deep distate for BSP and its 'features', I'd like to set the record straight. It's not spyware, it's adware. It's a prorgam that downloads ads, that's it. No information is collected, bar the fact you give them your IP when you connect to the ad server.

whenU keeps the information about visiting websites - isn't it spyware? i don't know, but i don't want to use this player. i think, there are more alternatives - i use now AVS DVD Player (http://www.avsmedia.com/dvdplayer/index.aspx) - it's free, easy to use, supports all major formats

The Player installs codec-packs and those also still became outdated...

That's why I recommend mplayer+<stick your favorite GUI here> or VLC =)

They are feature-rich, multiplatform, open-source, free ... what more should we need ? There are hundreds of GUI's for mplayer out there btw.

The only pitfall I see with using such good players is that when you come across an "invalid" file you don't know about it until you throw it at your SAP or MPC, or send it to a friend that will tell you "I can't read it you suck !" :D

Well, even though I really like mplayer, and I have installed and used mpc and vlc - I still use Bsplayer as my main player. The main reason for this - is movie window and control window are separated (yes, I know mplayer has the same thing) - but Bsp'aer windows is draggable, and it gets larger/smaller with mouse wheel. - And that is the most comfortable thing to use i ever seen.
If mplayer or vlc could reproduce this behaviour - i would immdiately switch.
But or course i can no toleate any sort of malware. So I'm just using 1.37version.
But from the standpoint of format support - mplayer and vlc beat bsplayer easiliy. mplayer and vlc support everything from the start. And I have to work hard to make everything work in BS - install decoder filters, splitter, ffdshow, haali, etc..
