buy yourself an external 'TV CAPTURE' USB hook up, and plug your VCR into and use its software to capture the VHS's to your hard drive, then follow the directions on the various guides on this site to change the captured file to DVD

hope that helps mate

Keep in mind that DVD backup is less stable than VHS. Once you make your DVD video disks, don't throw out the tapes, and if you really want to protect the video make new 1:1 copies of the original copies every year or so on fresh media. At some point the original copies will degrade until they're no longer usable, but since the generational copies are all digital there will be no quality loss. You can repeat the process forever.

Make sure the Toshiba laptop has USB 2.0 ports and the external capture box that you buy uses USB 2.0. USB 1.0(1.1) has bandwidth limitations for video capture.

Or if the laptop has a firewire port you can buy a DV bridge, such as the Canopus ADVC series.

Since you are a begginner, a program like Ulead Movie Factory might be good for you. It is an all in one program that will capture/edit/author/burn.
