It is really hard to find a mpeg2 decoder and an ac3 decoder that works with windows media encoder without it crashing or reporting errors.
What do others use, that works? I don't want any frame dropping and want to have an ac3 decoder that can handle 2-pass VBR mode and also 6 channel audio. Is this possible?
So far I have tested the following decoders with the corresponding results:
ffdshow - crashes
Dscalar5 - only delivers black video
Power DVD 7 trial - crashes
WinDVD 6 - works, but not 2-pass VBR audio (haven't tried registry change with no dropped frames yet, but according to others it should work with this decoder)
ac3filter - works but not 2-pass VBR audio together with WINDVD6 video
Elecard - don't crash wme but reports resolution of 1406x0 so not possible to start encoding in the graphical interface. Worked great with command line though. Not possible to use 2-pass VBR audio when it was used together with ac3filter (Elecard didn't install an ac3 decoder)
Nvidia - only delivers black video. Can be because of my ATI graphic card. Only rendering the video in graphedit worked great though.
Power DVD 5, Dell version - works on another computer, but not 2-pass VBR audio (Remark: this codec have a strange setup in graphedit with overlay video mixer. Anyone knows why?)
Old sonic version - crashes
Tests were performed on a DVD-ripped VOB with one MPEG2 and one 5.1 AC3 stream within. I have tried to just use one installed decoder at a time on my computer with these test but all the installing maybe messed up the computer and gave these results. I also suspect that different computer settings can give other results, especially for the NVIDIA decoder.
What have others tried? Some decoder to recommend that works good or is everyone using avisynth? Has anyone got 2-pass VBR audio to work at all?
Have heard that power DVD can drop frames and there is no setting to change that compared to windvd. Someone that can confirm that? I did observe it once but that was with peak-bitrate VBR that don't work that well in my opinion.
