i have a tvcard with built in MPEG-2 Hardware Encoder (aka Theater 550 PRO)

should i capture with raw yuy2 or mpeg-2 ?
witch is best?
i can configure the mpeg2 hw encoder to use higher bitrate, & tweak the hell out of it

witch is best? With 60 posts under your belt, you should know by now that this violates forum rule 12.

#12 doesn't apply as there is an objective answer to this question. yuy2 is best because a) it's uncompressed b) it has full, 4:2:2 color resolution. mpeg2 over 4mb/s looks nearly the same though, in my opinion, but color resolution is half at 4:2:0.
I think other factors are more important, just cap with hardware mpeg2 and you save a lot of time. In my case the mpeg2 actually looks better, because of a hardware pre-filtering that smoothes out some video noise.

#12 doesn't apply as there is an objective answer to this question. You don't get to overrule moderator decisions. Struck for rule 16. Take further discussion to PM with a moderator or Doom9, or be struck again.

One could also argue that raw YUY2 is the worst, because it takes up far more space than MPEG2. And the 'which is best?' question couldn't have been about quality alone, because the OP already acknowledged that raw yuy2 has better quality. So we are asked to make a weighing between quality and file size for him, which is idiotic because everybody has to find such a sweet spot for himself.

neuron2: I apologize. I did not consider how my wording would affect a moderator. Believe it or not, my main focus was only to provide an objective answer to the question.
