View Full Version : AVI Input to DVDRB possible?

Question:
Is importing avi files to RB a possibility? I've been using VDub quite a bit lately, and am very happy with the control and visibility it offers with filtering. Problem is it only exports avi files, which I have been feeding directly to CCE via frameserving. However, I still prefer the control I have with Rebuilder during the encoding process, rather than working directly with CCE, HC, etc...
Is this something that is possible with DVDRebuilder?

No. DVDRB is a tool for backing up DVDs.

um... I'm aware of that. Thanks.
The AVI files were created from DVD VOB files... What I'm asking is if RB can be made to handle AVI input, or is it too much trouble/conflict?

It's possible, but not easy. You'd have to use Movie-Only mode and create the D2V, INF, and AVS files by hand.

What you can do is, take your avi file and use something like Encore and convert it to a DVD like disc. You don't have't to reduce the size from Encore. Just let it be as large as it can if you want to use DVDRB to do the transcoding. But then again, Encore has its own transcoder. I am not sure who's better.

If the AVIs were created from DVDs, you should simply take your DVD and use it as input. You won't get a better input.

Thanks blutach but I don't think you have completely understood my post. I want to use VirtualDub for editing DVD's. VirtualDub only outputs AVI.... Which leads us back to where this thread started. Oh well...
Basically I was just wondering how difficult it would be for RB to be designed to handle AVI input by itself. It may be that that type of feature gets too far away from RB's original intended use - DVD backup
nooner6's suggestion to use adobe encore (or maybe another DVDauthoring program that handles AVI) may be the best way to get an AVI back into a format DVDRB can work with. On the other hand, it may end up being easier to just use the process I have been using - frameserving avi directly into CCE, then muxing - which will require me to learn more of the nuances of CCE and other programs... ie calculating size, bitrate, etc.. which is something that DVDRB does so very well.

That's what I would do if I were you. You simply drag your AVI file into Encore and make a DVD file size out of it without transcoding. THen let DVDRB do the transcoding once in DVD format. You can even add chapters and other stuff if you want to be fancy.

Here's a scenario you could use:
1. Do a PREPARE on the DVD source.
2. Use VDUB with the AVS files as input.
3. Save the files to an AVI with VDUB.
4. Modify the AVS files so they use AVISOURCE() instead of MPEG2SOURCE().
As long as the frame counts don't change, DVD-RB will reencode and REBUILD from the AVI files.
I guess it all depends what you want to do with VDUB.

Isnt this a ground for new feature request, how about if the pro version can build a simple DVD(without menu's) from an avi source ????
