Hi

I’m trying to rip subtitles from DVDs (VOBs) & encountered SOME PROBLEMS. I prefer 1 file to cover the subtitles to the whole movie rather than multiple files. I prefer to output .srt or any other easy one to handle, maybe .sup or .idx?

SUBRIP 1.16 & 1.52
See screenshot 01 with my observations & comments in the picture.

DVDSUBEDIT 1.33
The OCR function makes some mistakes with spelling [too many to manually correct them!] such as:
- general spelling errors (but not much)
- words stuck together i.e. “beentogether” should be “been together”

SUBTITLE CREATOR 2.0.4
I got NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 installed on my XP computer (according to Add/ Remove Programs) but when I click to on the .exe, a black DOS windows quickly appears & disappears and nothing is installed or opened. I’m not even sure if SC2.0.4 can rip subs.

Are there any other software that can do good subtitle ripping without encountering OCR problems with spellings and punctuation?

SRT2SUP is not for download anymore.

I’m not interested in making subtitles from scratch or editing original subtitles, I just wanna rip them preferably retaining all ITALIC text and special characters like musical notes.

After ripping the subtitle, how can I put it back into the DVD movie. I just want to add 1 or 2 [OPTIONAL NOT FORCED] subtitle streams only.

CHEERS.

Perhaps you can for now describe the problems you've encountered with SubRip?

use VSRip to extract/rip subs to idx/sub format, no ocr is performed.

if youre ripping the subs to add them to another dvd you can demux them using pgcdemux(no ocr is performed) and then add them to the other dvd with subtitle creator(pgcdemux/muxman/vobblanker)

Hi

I can't use SUBTITLE CREATOR at the moment, as said in my FIRST post:

SUBTITLE CREATOR 2.0.4
I got NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 installed on my XP computer (according to Add/ Remove Programs) but when I click to on the .exe, a black DOS windows quickly appears & disappears and nothing is installed or opened. I’m not even sure if SC2.0.4 can rip subs.

How do I work SC2.0.4 properly?

When converting subs to .idx/.sub, can I retain all ITALIC text and special characters like musical notes?

srt2sup is still available at
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/srt2sup.cfm
I typed only
srt2sup
in Google and found it. Did you try a web search?

Once again, I'd ask that, perhaps you can for now describe the problems you've encountered with SubRip?

Hi

I’m having problems extracting a “100% PERFECT” subtitles file.

SUBRIP 1.16 & 1.52
I tried using SUBRIP which uses OCR. When I click Start, the New Characters window keeps on popping up on every single character it scans on the first subtitle. Every single character!

After the first subtitle item is scanned, I get “THIS SUBTITLE CAN’T BE PROCESSED” window. It also says could be “bad OCR set up or none space between subtitle lines. Fill in the item manually.”

I wanted to see its response to the rest of the movie so I skipped this for the moment. Next subtitle item, same thing!

I have to teach SUBRIP every single character?

The screenshot I posted included these 2 windows/messages plus my OCR set-up for SUBRIP experts to check.

The latest SUBRIP I got is version 1.52.

See screenshot in post 1.

DVDSUBEDIT 1.33
This can output a whole movie’s subtitles into one .SRT file. Can also output .SUP. The OCR function makes some mistakes with spelling [too many to manually correct them!] such as:
- general spelling errors (but not much)
- words stuck together i.e. “beentogether” should be “been together”
- l (small L) is usually mistaken for I
- loses all ITALIC and special characters like musical notes in output (I think!)
I can open a .SUP file extracted from PGCDEMUX, the preview looks ok with ITALIC and special characters like musical notes but like I said the OCR function is NOT perfect.

VSRIP 1.0.0.6
I can convert a whole movie’s subtitles to .SUB or .IDX file. But when I import it into DVDLAB PRO, nothing happens. DVDLAB PRO doesn’t take .IDX files. SUBTITLE WORKSHOP says the .SUB file from VSRIP is a “bad subtitle or an unsupported format”.

PGCDEMUX 1.0.2.5
I can get a .SUP file for the whole movie’s subtitles from PGCDEMUX but DVDLAB PRO does not take these. SUBTITLE WORKSHOP also does not take these. DVDSUBEDIT can take .SUP but read the problems with DVDSUBEDIT above.

SUBMAGIC
This is not a sub ripper, just a subs fixer / editor. Doesn’t take .SUP or .IDX files. Tried to open the .SUB file from VSRIP with SUBMAGIC but got error message. Tried to import the .SRT file from DVDSUBEDIT to fix the spelling/grammar etc but doesn’t fix every single one I’m afraid. Gotta do it manually like SUBTITLE WORKSHOP.

But in general, are all subtitle ripping methods unreliable? Can you keep all ITALIC and special characters like musical notes when subtitle ripping & importing it later on?

CHEERS!

lets see:

you have dvd A with subs

dvd B without subs

all you have to do is demux the subs from dvd A, demux video and audio from dvd B and mux demuxed subs/audio/video with muxman

its really that simple

no ocr

if dvd B has menus, demux the main movie and then mux the demuxed subs/mainmovie demuxed video/mainmoviedemuxed audio and author with muxman, then you can replace the main movie from dvd B with the output from muxman with voblanker(replace PGC)

Use SUBRIP, but without OCR. Use save subpictures as BMP, or SUP files like HERE (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdsubs.htm).

Its sad your having problems with subrip, as I have not encountered anything except for a wierd anomaly that happens once in a while with the subs starting with wrong time stamps (which ive been able to fix (check box doesnt always work) ) If the subs are bad (ie small, bad colors, jaggy) ive found subrip to have problems reading them, but once you get through 5-10 mins of teaching, it runs through pretty quick. But as ricardo was saying, if your just trying to get subs from one dvd to another, demux and mux ;)
