I've rewritten the exporter so all the image handling is done in avisynth when exporting. Could you help me test it out?
DVD slideshow GUI v 0.68 (http://www.videohelp.com/~tin2tin/DVDsGUI068.exe)
Included in the installer is a version of avisynth - you can just cancel the instalation of this if you prefer an other version.
Have fun,

There is one bug which is really bothering me and that is when Media Player Classic is used for preview of large slideshows, it thends to hang in the memory after it has been shut down, and can only be stopped by ctrl+alt+del and then killing the mplayerc.exe. Anyone knows how to deal with this?

Hmm the MPC problem sounds very similar to this bug rapport in the avisynth 2.57 release notes.
Some problems encoding .avs video with Windows Media Encoder 9. The problem is that the "wmeenc.exe" process doesn't shut down properly. The encoder program closes, but an instance of "wmeenc.exe" remains in Task Manager hogging a LOT of memory.
Wilbert please reconfirm problem
DVD slideshow GUI does work, it's only when previewing very large slideshows that this problem with MPC happens.
