I have a miniDV cam that creates DV-avi files at 720*480 (standard). I use Virtualdub to encode/compress these files and am asking if the final/compressed file should be resized for playback on a Philips DVP-642/37 stand alone player? I've read that it should be and need to know what standard resize resolutions are optimal.

In advance, thanks

What's your target file format? Which codec are you going to use?

Hi!

My 642/37 plays back 720x480 files of all acceptable formats (This is standard NTSC DVD resolution) properly.

Exaclty what is it you've read? Can you provide a link?

I use Target Quantizer of 2.5 mostly; Xvid is the codec.

I've encoded (Xvid) at 640x480 and I can't distinguish the difference. I don't have links at this time but have read that Divx/Xvid doesn't support the aspect ratio of 4:3 and therefore need to be resized to 640x480 for the true 4:3 AR.

My question is can I resize even smaller and still be able to maintain the AR of 720x480 without a loss of quality.

The question is whether you standalone supports non-square pixels when playing back MPEG-4 style video. As far as I know most standalones expect a 1:1 PAR (pixel aspect ratio) when playing back DivX or XviD video, thus the best resolution to resize to is 640x480 for 4:3 sources, and 848x480 for 16:9 sources (the latter is rounded so that the resolution is divisible by 16).

You may resize to smaller resolutions, which can be better depending on the desired bitrate. In that case make sure you resize on field basis, provided that your source is interlaced.
