no, sorry. each full rip in one folder. OR put all in one folder, then create the d2v files for each movie and demux only the audio you want (named accordly to movie name).Then you can queue the d2v+audio works
Thanks much though perhaps we (you) could use the idea of watch folders as implemented by Dr DivX (http://stage6.divx.com/Dr_DivX/show_video/1010870) which would allow numerous rips in 1 folder to be automatically encoded according to a specific profile.
As to the default resolution options... Auto, 720, 704, etc... perhaps you could include 'Original'.
I realise that most people use encoding to crunch or compress their movies by 60%, 80% or more... mostly through downsizing and then partly through the elimination of extraneous audio tracks & extras. Only a small fraction of the compression is actually due directly to the new codec... though H264 (Mpeg4 P10) has very a significant advantage over Mpeg2 material.
Nothing beats the quality of original resolution by eliminating the downsizing process.
:) :D :eek:

Maybe this isn't exactly the appropriate place to ask this, but it has happened with two dvd ripped movies that subtitles are not shown on video...
(would it be illegal to name those two movies, or could I do that for reference purposes? )
I encoded those movies both with autoMKV and Nero Recode and the subtitles are not shown, although I have all necessary software installed and did not omit any relevant step in the encoding procedure...
DirectVobSub loads, the "Show subtitles" setting is selected, so as the relevant subtitle, but they are not actually displayed...
I even tried ripping the subs with a different program, removing those embedded and merging the new subtitle files to no avail...
Even having internal AND external subs did not help and choosing between the two...
What is at fault here? Should I use an earlier version of DirectVobSub, or is it due to a bad rip? (I re-ripped both movies 2-3 times...in this case, maybe not all protection was properly removed ? )

anyway.. are you using mediaplayer classic ?
try reinstalling directvobsub by the link i posted

Hi buzzqw !
Sorry that i am not so present here in the forum as i was in the past. I have some big changes in my Job so give me 2 weeks or so and i will do all the tests and bring back my lazy buddy in here again ..8)
The problem is ... your Program is getting near perfect now ... and so all the freaks out there seems to be some kind of "pleased". Please ... never give up ... you do a very great job in here ... even if it gets some kind of silent (3 Votes only).
Best IT is when you here nothing about the IT ....8) Thats the time it is running kind of perfect ... same with your program.

How would I do a grayscale encode in AutoMKV? I remember there being a checkbox on MkvMagic's advanced settings. I might be ripping a DVD of an old B&W film soon and would like to reap the space savings if I can define it as a grayscale job.

Sounds awesome... does the entire encode need to be in grayscale to truly benefit ?
I'm keen to encode 'The World at War' and 'The Cold War' series both of which are over 20 hrs long and 'mostly' in B&W... but not completely.

I don't know much about video encoding, but in still images Greyscale is typically 256 shades (4 bit), so comparing this to a full color (24 bit image) we're dealing with a colorspace that is only 1/6th the size. Even if this is done in a higher depth grayscale (the limit seems to be 16bit) we're still drastically reducing the actual palette used to draw the image.
So the answer is YES. You would have to encode the entire movie as grayscale for this to work. I don't think it is possible to dynamically change the bit depth of a video file while its playing, so whatever type you set it up as would be the number of colors assumed for the entire feature.
Logically, bandwidth not being used to handle so many more colors can be put to use on lowering image compression, so you would get much better image quality in a file of the same disk size. Or not used at all, so the encoding bitrate would just be lower and you would have a film of the same quality as the "full color" encoded one, but without unneeded bulk.
Also, since we would be reducing the actual color palette, compression artifacts wouldn't have the ability to show up in color on a B&W movie (which would be very noticeable).
If anyone can correct me on this I'd be happy to hear.
I might try encoding twice so I can see exactly what sort of saving I get from it. But it would be hard to gauge the exact benefits since I can't set a certain "image quality" for the encode and then use an unlimited movie size to see the difference between 4-bit grayscale and 24-bit color. Plus modern compression algorithms may make the difference less drastic.

Well, you can in fact set the image quality by using the ConstantQuality-crf.xml profile set at, lets say, 22... or even leave it at the default of 18. This is a 1-pass unlimited filesize encode that 'gets it right the 1st time'... guided by your quality setting... higher numbers producing less quality and vice versa. 18 is near-perfect quality while 22 is still Excellent and 24 is Good quality.
This will also save you time along with all the adjoining benefits of Consistency, Efficiency and Effectiveness.

Ah, I'll have to try that. I haven't had a chance to futz around with the profiles as I've been struggling to get a project to finish successfully in AutoMKV up to this point (and I've just now gotten there). [putting on dunce cap]
I still haven't gotten episodic DVD ripping (straight from DVD to MKV) to work properly, I'm not getting the right audio track options in AutoMKV when I use an .IFO file other than the one the program chooses by default (the one that rips all episodes into one single movie). But I realized today that DVDFabDecrypter can rip individual episodes from the DVD very nicely, it even lets me preview the episode so I don't have to guess what IFO to use and lets me pick the audio and subtitle tracks I want to rip there. So I preripped one today and set AutoMKV to processing before I left for work, so if that comes out fine I can concentrate of actually getting the best quality image I can in my size specification.
Speaking of quality settings, how do I interpret the AAC audio quality settings? I'm used to using bitrates for audio settings, but the AAC encoder is using some weird .1 -> 1.0 scale, how are these related to file size or quality?

well, the audio seems to be fixed, but the movie is still not widescreen. I have about a 1" bar at the top and 1/4" bar at the bottom.

Ah, I think I understand you now. Since I ripped only the audio and subtitle tracks I wanted with DVDFabDecrypter, I don't have to define them in AutoMKV. I can just choose "All Audio Tracks" and "RIP ALL SUBS", which I just now tried, and the audio encoded this time and I got the final mkv file.
The only downside is the audio tracks are both labeled "und" in VLC media player.

New FULL Release !
stable NEW package WITH DVDFabDecrypter www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV078.rar (8.38mb, all inclusive, NO install)
stable NEW package WITHOUT DVDFabDecrypter www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV078_NORIP.rar (7.96mb, NO install)
0.78 Full Package 13/03/2007
ADDED: Is now possible to specify AVS input in AUDIO (suggestion by dlflannery)
Build your avs inputs as these examples:
for Videoinput.avs: directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",audio=false)+directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",audio=false)
for Audioinput.avs directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",video=false)+directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",video=false)
ADDED: --deadzone-inter and --deadzone-intra support to x264 profiles, change "false" to value you want (like 4)
ADDED: Process this PGC option
ADDED: PGC ripping. Only on ifo input (or dvd input) will be possible to select the specific PGC to process. Example, the vts_02_0.ifo contain 3 pgc , 3 episodes, before selecting input check both process this ifo and process this pgc. After selecting input select from the drop down list the pgc you want to process (correct subtitles ripping isn't guarantee)
ADDED: In XviD profiles added a new option <muxing> (if used only for avi container). This option can be valorized as: <muxing>auto</muxing> or <muxing>avi10</muxing> or <muxing>opendml</muxing>. On auto will be AutoMKV to select the better muxing, on avi10 will be forced the AVI 1.0 mux, on opendml will be forced OpenDML muxing
ADDED: To Queue and to save settings the pgc check
ADDED: On "Audio wasn't encoded properly" now AutoMKV will ask for continue or quit. The question is "timed", so after 120 seconds AutoMKV will continue, even if the muxing would be broken
ADDED: "Use DirectShowSource for Audio" to Save Setting and Queue
ADDED: Preset PAR to WMV encoding, the value of <pixelratio> could be
10:11 for DV NTSC fullscreen
40:30 for DV NTSC widescreen 40:33
12:11 for DV PAL fullscreen 12:11
16:11 for DV PAL widescreen 16:11
ADDED: AutoMKV will check for NeroAACEnc presence and if not found will offer the possibility to download (will simply start default browser on official Nero Digital Audio page)
ADDED: Command line help will be invoked even by -? (suggestion by Demeragon) (and by "/?" "?" "--?" "-help" "--help")
ADDED: Support for SoundOut. BePipe will be no more used. No more need of .NET Framework. Look at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120025&highlight=soundout
ADDED: SoundOut need that libsndfile-1.dll is in program path. On first start AutoMKV will ask to copy into c:\windows\system32 . Click YES button or Audio would be not encoded
ADDED: AutoMKV will save for every job its xml profile, so will be possible to "Use this profile" with queue. I hope to not break anything...
ADDED: "Original" in WIDTH selection. If selected "Original" the resizer will switch to NONE
FIXED: MP3 will support only official preset bitrate: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256, 320, also removed quality encoding, will remain ABR (default) and CBR encoding
FIXED: Coding Tech. AAC will be able to encode only up to 2ch (DPL II, DPL, Stereo, Mono). For encoding with AAC audio up to 5.1 Channel use Nero AAC Audio encoder
FIXED: ColorMatrix thread will be set to number of CPU*1.5. ColorMatrix will be faster.
FIXED: Episodic DVD/IFO and Process this PGC is avaiable only with ifo/dvd input
FIXED: Episodic DVD/IFO is renamed to Process this IFO
FIXED: AutoMKV, as reported in log will move original audio file to audio.XXX in \temp directory. Now it will copy this file (suggestion by dlflannery)
FIXED: When selecting on audio Copy Original the channel downmixing mode is disabled
FIXED: There are several refer to "ACC" audio instead of "AAC" audio (thanks to Demeragon)
FIXED: XviD threads will be set to automatic detection (suggestion by Demeragon)
FIXED: Several improvment to only audio encoding
FIXED: When encoding to WMV and movie is "Partly Film" then no more is used "Hybrid Decimating" but classical decimating (suggestion by Shark_jlc)
FIXED: AutoMKV will double count the size of audio on TS files (thanks to Prospero424)
FIXED: Better ToolTip for "Adjust CRF Profile". This option is to use only in conjuction with CRF profile and HIT MEDIA SIZE
FIXED: More robust use of XviD CQ profile and Hit Media Size
UPDATE: X264 to 628

Perhaps it would be possible to have a slider system for the width as used by Dr DivX.
Of course you'ld have to pre-analyse each movie to calculate the recommended width for each format (PAL, NTSC, 4:3, HD).

and a window titled "Converting File" that says "Conversion Status: Initialization Successful, Beginning Convertion..." which I think belongs to NeroAAC.
My CPU is running 97-100%, but task manager says it is x264.exe that is taking all the cycles, and I seem to have no disk activity like I usually would have.
I'm going to shut down and go to work, but first I'll tell you what I changed from last time...
I ripped a different DVD episode and this time took the first two audio tracks listed in DVDFabDecrypter, and I once again defined them in AutoMKV instead of just choosing "all audio" AutoMKV listed four audio track choices when I was setting this run up even though I had only ripped two to start with. I was trying to get both audio tracks and have them labeled correctly for VLC player. Anyway, these happened to be 5.1 audio tracks, is that why I am hanging now? I figured Nero would downmix as needed on its own.

FIXED: Coding Tech. AAC will be able to encode only up to 2ch (DPL II, DPL, Stereo, Mono). For encoding with AAC audio up to 5.1 Channel use Nero AAC Audio encoderI can't say I like this option at all.
CT's encoder is every bit as good at generating 6Ch AAC-LC and HE audio streams as Nero's - if not better.
Personally, I can't see much point of offering options such as, DPL II, DPL. As I can't see an instance when they would be used. In my opinion all that's needed is Mono, 2Ch (stereo) and 5.1 (6Ch) surround for both Nero and CT's encoder
Dare I say it... Maybe, my PM'd suggestion of being able to directly select CT's and Nero's AAC-LC and HE encoders via the "Basic Settings" menu (and not via the "Advanced Audio Menu") may prove useful after-all.... As even I find the "Advanced Audio Menu" a little too confusing to configure and rather unnecessary :eek:

Check your 'temp' encoding folder for the audio track... and take note of the filesize... I like to keep my 'audio track' of regular stereo encodes between 5% and 10% of the video filesize. You may be suitably impressed with a .25 quality setting... or less... depending on your application and constraints.
To save time... you could run your encode and when it's completed encoding the audio, check the filesize, listen and if necessary... cancel the encode and start again with new audio settings.

That was my mistake. I did not know Nero could handle 5.1 channel audio but you mention it in the release notes for this version. I thought it might get confused if 6 channels was input and it was only expecting 2. :p
I couldn't tell what Nero was doing as I just had the "beginning conversion..." message. No progress meter moving and no disk activity. It just appeared to be frozen. That and the unsupported format error is what led to my thinking.

When i create c:\windows\system32 the program runs fine.
the normalisation procedure seems to take a ludicrous amount of time, i waited for almost an hour for it to normalize a 2hr movie (6ch DT3 -> nero stereo), it taxes my cpu only 50% though, is that program multithreaded?
aside from time issues the program seems to work fine.

the normalisation procedure seems to take a ludicrous amount of time, i waited for almost an hour for it to normalize a 2hr movie (6ch DT3 -> nero stereo), it taxes my cpu only 50% though, is that program multithreaded?
Interesting, maybe my system was still running when I thought it had hung. I wish there was a progress meter or ETR listed somewhere if it is going to take so long to normalize.

@buzzqw:
The "set width resolution" used to go to 320 when a Zune profile was selected. Now it goes to "automatic" and 320 is not one of the pull down selections. Will automatic give the 320 needed for Zune, or does the number need to be entered manually?
Thanks
Edit, after some testing with Zune profiles:
1. It appears you do have to manually enter the 320 width for Zune profile encoding. (Better to have it automatically set -- 320 is the only width for Zune devices.)
2. Testing with two mpeg2 clips was fine with interlace set to auto. One clip was partly film, one was partly interlaced.
3. Wasn't quite sure what settings were needed for this AVS input file designed to splice multiple AVI files:
function makeMovie(string fileName) {
video=AVISource(fileName)
audio=getchannel(video,1,1)
return audiodub(video, audio).resampleAudio(44100)
}
makeMovie("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane2.avi") ++
\ makeMovie("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane3.avi")
What I found worked was:
1. Input the AVS video file. Do not input any files for audio when asked.
2. For audio track 1, use the pull-down menu and select the same AVS file name already loaded as the video input file.
3. Check use direct source for both video and audio (i.e., two check boxes are checked)
With these settings it encoded fine and the resize and autocrop functions were applied.
Is that the way you intended it to operate?
I noticed a colormatrix correction being applied -- I believe this is new isn't it? Playing movie.avs in WMP with and without the color correction, I saw no significant difference.
Except for having to manually enter the Zune width, all the WMV stuff looks great! :thanks: for all your work!

I had a 2.5 hour movie I was encoding in x264 using the ConstantQuality-CRF profile with a quantizer of 20. I encoded this movie into 640x272 and the filesize came out be a whopping 1.95G which surprised me since the XviD file of the same movie same resolution with a quantizer of 3 was 1.7G. So I tried encoding it with the same resolution, same encoder (H-264), same audio, same quantizer value with some other tools; here is the result.
HandBrake/MediaFork on the PC --- 1.34G

Why are the results so much larger with AutoMKV?

I tried to keep the audio the same on all of them, but I could not control the Audio on VisualHub. I can't say about the Bframes and such such since you don't have control of those things in HandBrake and VisualHub. And with AutoMKV the only thing I did was select the profile and set the CRF value. The audio was AAC at .35 so it was low and not have much influence of filesize. Handbase and VisualHub both use x264 coder.
You have to admit that a Data Rate of 1675kbs for a CRF value of 20 is way out of line for a 640x272 movie. It should be somewhere around 900-1000kbps.
Quality on all of them look great.

Are you using AutoMKV 0.78... ???
IF not... did you batch your encode first... and then run the queue... ???
AutoMKV 0.76 could not remember 'modified' quantizer settings in batch mode.
Therefore your encode would run at the default quantizer setting of 18... regardless of your choice.

Perhaps, along with the option for Original Resolution could be added the option for Automatic Cropping (see Image) ... done in such a way that downsizing is not necessary... even if it implied cropping 1 line extra or 1 too few.
Dr DivX 1 and VirtualDub have both had a simple Editing feature to 'slice and dice' allowing the user to edit-out intros, credits, adverts or the like... a feature certainly high on my wishlist.
While I realise that this is way beyond the present status of AutoMKV... a preview panel with a simple resolution slider does allow you to view the possible resolutions, croppings and changes in croppings & resolutions... in realtime.... and preplan accordingly.

There is a "preview" encode feature isn't there? Where it only encodes the first 5% of the movie.
That would be faster than having to wait for an entire feature to encode before seeing the results. But then it would be more useful to specify an actual time index range to use so you could pick, say, a high action section of the movie, much of the first 5% will be opening credits.

for Audioinput.avs directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",video=false)+directshowsource("C:\apps\test\movie.avi",video=false)
........
BHH
I've constructed my video.avs and audio.avs exactly as quoted above except substituting my two video file names where you have "movie.avi". Both files play OK in WMP11.
Trying to encode to Zune profile. Deinterlace set to NONE.
I notice when I load the audio AVS, I have to select "files of type all (*.*)" in the browser (i.e., .avs is not a pre-defined type).
I've tried all combinations of the two Use DirectShow check boxes (video and audio), i.e. (off,off), (on,off), (off, on) and (on, on).
I always get the same movie.avs in the temp folder:
Import("C:\MyVideo.avs")
audio=EnsureVBRMP3Sync(audio)
audio=ConvertAudioToFloat(audio)
audio=getchannel(audio,1,2)
audiodub(audio,last)
This fails for two reasons:
1. No audio clip has been loaded.
2. Even if my audio AVS was imported, it would not define the "audio" variable needed by movie.avs (following your quoted example above)
If I define "audio" in my audio AVS file and import it as the first statement in movie.avs, it encodes fine.
What am I doing wrong?
Also: I"ve tried it with deinterlace set to auto. It takes longer but still fails and movie.avs is the same.
Thanks.

I was having the problem, it was pretty much the only thing keeping AutoMKV from working reliably for me. But I seem to be past it now, I hope. I had an odd experience last night with 0.78, long story short I ran an encode on a super fast profile to test if the audio issue was fixed and it seemed to be gone, but then when I tried to run the job for real - I used the same settings, only changing the final container size and X264 profile to "anime_maxquality" I had the error again. It was maddening! :eek: Why was it happening again when it had just done the job without a problem!
Anyway, I went to the forums and saw 0.78a had been released, so I installed it and ran my encode with the same settings it had just failed on previously and it worked! I'm starting to think the old normalization method had something to do with the issues I was having. I've only run that one job so far, though (because it took all the rest of that night and today while I was at work to finish with such a slow encoding profile). So it might still have an issue on the second or third run.
Have you tried 0.78a? It did get rid of that normalization delay me and a couple other people had.

The failures described in my earlier post (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=970626&postcount=1313)continue although the movie.avs file has changed from before.
Again I tried all combinations of the 2 direct show check boxes (could you tell me what settings I should be using for these? :confused: -- that would cut my testing time by 4X !)
Depending on these checkbox settings I get two movie.avs versions.
One has:
movie = directshowsource("C:\videos\MyVideo.avs",audio=false)
movie = isRGB(movie) ? ConvertToYV12(movie,interlaced=true) : movie
movie = isYUY2(movie) ? ConvertToYV12(movie,interlaced=true) : movie
audio = DirectShowSource("C:\videos\MyVideo.avs",fps=30.000299,convertfps = true,video=false)
Note that the audio AVS ("MyAudio.avs") is never used.
The other version of movie.avs has just one line:
Import("C:\videos\MyVideo.avs")
Again the audio AVS file is not used.
After I select MyVideo.avs as the input file, a file browser comes up asking for an audio file. That is where I select MyAudio.avs. Is this correct? I don't see any other way to input the audio AVS file. This audio AVS then shows in the Audio Track 1 source window.

I reported a similar (not identical) case in an earlier post (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=970062&postcount=1289) (see #3). I had to check both directshow boxes for it to encode properly. I did not load the DGDecode plugin and I didn't define clips movie and audio as global. Are the plugin and/or the global variables needed so the direct show boxes don't need to be checked?
Is it possible to state simple logic that determines whether the directShow boxes should be checked?

when i use avitynth IMPORT fuction, avisynth "simply" import the "result" of audio and video, DON'T import what is the origins of audio and video.
When i use GLOBAL i force avisynth to remember what is audio and what is video
Is it possible to state simple logic that determines whether the directShow boxes should be checked?
more simply that you can suppose: whenever you want to process the input file (and so NOT AVS) by directshowsource
maybe due to not correct dgdecode handling, or you want to use a preprocessing filter using ffdshow, corrupted audio or video....

Automkv .78 suggestions after a bit of use:
1) Windows Media Encoder has failed to find the length on 3 out of 3 movies so far, even via the alternate method it tries.
2) I can't type a path in the "Select output folder" ? I like to throw these movies I encode into temp files, where ever.
3) I don't want a nero encoder popup everytime I start AutoMKV. Put a check box on the message window saying "Do not show on startup", or "do not show again".
4) When using a queue, what is the difference between the "Start Encoding" and the "Start Queue" button?
5) If the main drop-down for "Audio Track 2" is set to none, why not disable the remaining controls in that group (i.e containter drop down, channel drop down, slider)
Same thing can apply to any control group where the main control essentially negates the others.
6) After I start an encode, and then I go back to AutoMKV and look at my settings (maybe adjust something to see what it does), do NOT change the Encoding status based on what I just looked at. It's confusing.
:)

I've been able to get H264 encodings (MKV or MP4 containers) using separate video-only and audio-only AVS input files. As we already discussed, I now know that this will not work with wmv encodings.
How aboue XVID/AVI ? I haven't been able to get it to work. I can't get AVS inputs to work at all for audio input with XVID, including also:
1. inputing a video+audio AVS as the video file and nothing as an audio file and selecting "all audio tracks"
2. inputing this same AVS as both the video file and the track 1 audio file.
I get encodings with no audio. Is there any way to get audio from an AVS input into an AVI/XVID encoding?

@delacroixp
you can't crop by odd number , change crop(movie,9,0,-7,-0) to crop(movie,10,0,-8,-0)
@Shark_jlc
1) Windows Media Encoder has failed to find the length on 3 out of 3 movies so far, even via the alternate method it tries.
don't worry, on my pcs it never got the exact lenght of movie. must be something within WMCmd.vbs AND DirectShowSource
I can't type a path in the "Select output folder"
don't know... i have negate the copy&paste here for security... ... i will do some test , if ok i will allow to paste the directory to output
I don't want a nero encoder popup everytime I start AutoMKV. Put a check box on the message window saying "Do not show on startup", or "do not show again".
i can add this to save settings, but if doing so i obligated all user to create a default profile... better to create a false neroAacEnc.exe of size > 10 bytes
4) When using a queue, what is the difference between the "Start Encoding" and the "Start Queue" button?
on start encoding only the last queue will start, on start queue all queue wainting will start
5) If the main drop-down for "Audio Track 2" is set to none, why not disable the remaining controls in that group (i.e containter drop down, channel drop down, slider)
i will consider.. but is a very low priority
Same thing can apply to any control group where the main control essentially negates the others.
for most control with "dangerous confict" is already done, if you spot something that MUST be disabled or will give a bad encoding , feel free to post
After I start an encode, and then I go back to AutoMKV and look at my settings (maybe adjust something to see what it does),
Sorry pal , but changing status AFTER and WHILE the encoding is started IS VERY VERY DANGEROUS. Automkv will check parameters (audio codec,audio bitrate, resizers...) only at time when it need this information. Better, automkc will not save all parameter when you it start encoding, but will read dinamically while encoding
@dlflannery
i will do some test, but the workflow should be the same...

use avs like this for video
LoadPlugin("DGDecode.dll")
mpeg2source("movie.d2v") well you can add even more plugins and filters
for audio
LoadPlugin("NicAudio.dll")
NicAC3Source("audio.ac3")
it is ok for both x264 and avi, remember that all those avs must be played ok on mediaplayer classic

Don't you just hate the 'simple solution'... ??? So I guess 2 odd crops don't make a right...

4) When using a queue, what is the difference between the "Start Encoding" and the "Start Queue" button?
on start encoding only the last queue will start, on start queue all queue wainting will start
It looks like there may be room for an improved Batch Interface... I've included an image (from Dr DivX OSS) which would move the 'start encoding button' to the Batch page... allow you to move your encodes up/down the queue... add plugins.... and portray a graphic display of the progress of your encode (See pic... pending approval).

Damn, and here I just started a job a half-hour ago. :p
I've got a request: I'm using Lame for audio on this encode, and after the normalize ran I was warned that applying +2 gain may cause audio clipping, but I wasn't aware it was going to ask for my confirmation and only saw it because I got back on the machine to check my email. Can we get a timeout added so if no user input a choice is automatically selected? That way the rest of the job is not held up by the question of whether to add gain or not on audio.
I realize this is probably someone else's project doing this and not AutoMKV itself.

I realise that your request is more to do with the automatic timeout response than whether a +2 gain would in fact cause clipping.
@buzzqw (all)
I've been using BeSweet (BeLight GUI) which does a 2-pass strategy to test for optimal audio boost first and then to implement the change on the 2nd pass.
I've had a gain of +14 and more and I'm sure that only rarely will a +2 gain actually cause any clipping but perhaps we could have the option for a complete and thorough 2-pass quality audio-boost... for those who prefer the 'perfect solution' and/or have time on their side.
In most cases a proper amplitude audio boost will do more to enhance the illusion of quality than any subwoofer, sub-50Hz, frequency support.

Don't the example AVS you give apply to an mpeg2 source only? Here are the AVS I am using:
Video:
directShowSource("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane2.avi", audio = false) +
\ directShowSource("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane3.avi", audio = false)
Audio:
DirectShowSource("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane2.avi", video = false).resampleAudio(44100) +
\ DirectShowSource("C:\Video\NickPlane2006_12_27\NickPlane3.avi", video = false).resampleAudio(44100)
getchannel(1,1)
These files play OK in mediaplayer classic.
These do not work for AVI/DIVX target. I have to shut AutoMKV down -- I think the audio processing is in an infinite loop. They DO work for MP4/X264 target. :confused:
These two .avi files total about 110M. I am willing to upload them to a site where you could download them (please suggest site) if you want to test with them.
Actually I have two other files with exactly the same characteristics (nickPlane4 and nickPlane5) and they total only about 30 MB. And you would get to see what the "cranky old newbie" looks like -- if you can stand that! :rolleyes:

This sounds ugly. It sounds like AutoMKV should be reading it's default settings from an ini file (or the registry) instead of having defaults in the application code itself. This would then cause everyone to have a default profile, and give you a place to save settings.
on start encoding only the last queue will start, on start queue all queue wainting will start.
Sounds... odd. I'm not sure who sets up a queue and then doesn't use it.
i will consider.. but is a very low priority
for most control with "dangerous confict" is already done, if you spot something that MUST be disabled or will give a bad encoding, feel free to post
ok :/
The idea behind disabling the controls would be to decrease the possibility of user error, by giving people fewer options to choose from, or to be confused by.
An end-user should not be able to do something that dangerous. If the settings were saved to an ini file, or registry, when the "Start Encode" or "Start Queue" button was hit, and then AutoMKV referenced that, it would take away any possible user-caused issues.
Buzzqw, once again I just want to say thank you for this application and the hard work you do with it. I've yet to come across a developer as helpful as yourself, and I hope you don't take these ideas I have as criticisms, I'm just thinking out loud of ways to help make this more accessable to a larger audience, and to decrease the amount of support you have to provide.
Thanks again Buzzqw.

Hi, I've been trying to find a working app to convert video to wmv for my PPC that will work with Vista and such my search has led me here. Now on to the matter at at hand...

Hi, I've been trying to find a working app to convert video to wmv for my PPC that will work with Vista and such my search has led me here. Now on to the matter at at hand...
10:19:06 Selected Input file: C:\Users\schizosmurf\Videos\Bleach\Dubbed\Bleach - 19 {C_P}.avi
It's funny you're mentioning that series. I haven't seen the {C_P} files but if they look like the [Dattebayo] fansubs I think the quality is very good considering file size. I'm actually trying to use AutoMKV to duplicate the quality of those encodes with my own anime on DVD. So far I have been unable to easily. They must have some really customized encoding profiles at work.
PPC? So you're using a Mac? If you're using OSX, you can get VLC Media Player for it, too and just play the original files.
no clip , i can assure, the procedure is safe
Yeah, I'm not worried about the audio clip, I just don't want to have to answer the question before it continues. :) If I hadn't come back to my PC it would have sat there for hours before I'd seen it. Can a command line switch be added by AutoMKV to "answer the question before it asks it"?

complete and thorough 2-pass quality audio-boost... for those who prefer the 'perfect solution' and/or have time on their side.
isn't possible to do a two pass with command line encoder like neroaac /ogg/lame....
And I suppose there's a good reason why the BeSweet audio encoder by DSPguru couldn't be included as an option... ???

there are two way of changing the profiles !
first, open the file into \profiles\x264-profiles\zxcvb.xml and edit it with notepad
second (and recommed) on advanced profiles editing modify the profile AND (after editing) check USE this Profile
in this way automkv will use this EDITED profile
about coding tech is better to use Nero (support 5.1ch!)
mini how-to
load the input file
select audio/container/codec/resize/width....
change the profile to crf
answer Go Unlimited
on advanced profile editing change bitratequantitizer from 18 to 20
check use this profile
click start

So what exacly does the CRF field do on the Advanced Settings Tab if it does not change the crf value of the encode? It seems to me that if I go over and put 20 into that field and then come back to the main tab and press encode it should encode with a crf of 20.

It sounds like AutoMKV should be reading it's default settings from an ini file (or the registry) instead of having defaults in the application code itself. This would then cause everyone to have a default profile, and give you a place to save settings.
I like this idea of having a default profile as well, as a file in the AutoMKV folder. I rather not have the program use the registry for a variety of reasons.

Do you mean you want a command line for ffmpeg for audio-only encoding with AVS input? I think I have the answer for that. Of course the ffmpeg build must have the avisynth option activated but most recent builds have that.
1. Define an AVS file with both video and audio in it. (ffmpeg will crash if you feed it an AVS with only audio in it.)
2. Here is an example command line that works -- tested on ffmpeg builds 7760 and 8047:
"C:\ffmpeg.exe" -i "C:\audio+video.avs" -vn -acodec mp3 -ab 128 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -async 1 -y "C:\audioOut.mp3"
It appears ffmpeg will process only the audio, but it will crash unless it can analyze both video and audio in the AVS file.
Edit after further testing:
You can synthesize the video for the video+audio AVS as follows:
# Source the audio clip as appropriate (this is just an example):
audio=directShowSource("inputFile",video = false);
# Following code synthesizes a blank video to match the audio so
# ffmpeg will not crash:
dur=audioLength(audio) / audioRate(audio)
video=blankClip(dur*20,320,240, "YUY2",20)
audioDub(video,audio)
This will work if inputFile is a video (with audio of course) or just an audio file, as long as it can be sourced in AVS.

So when we are using CRF we don't have to define a resize?
Whenever I chose the CRF profile, the width would change to 720, so I was resetting it to AUTO or the actual width if I knew it offhand.

i use delaycut to "fix" the delay, so to fix the delay you must change the filename to moviexxx 420ms.ac3 .... into moviexxx 820ms.ac3
isn't as megui that use the delay function of mkvmerge when muxing

EDIT: @delacroixp
besweet doens't work with avisynth, doesn't work with any file where is needed directshow , are you able to extract audio from an mkv with besweet ?
I think my first movie was with MeGUI where I encoded the sound with BeSweet and then muxed it with MkvToolnix(ver 2.0.2) MkvMerge GUI.
I've been encoding 'Band of Brothers' with video-only... hoping to generate the soundtrack with BeSweet in VBR (Streaming quality) and then mux them together...
Encoding with video-only (using ConstantQuality-CRF) has allowed me to better guage filesize and the Quantizer required to fit everything (including extras) onto 1 4.5 GB DVD. I've downsized the resolution by 50% and I'm still hoping to downmix some of the extras into MONO... it's getting a bit tight...
With a quantizer of 24 and comparable VBR-audio... the quality is far from perfect but still pretty incredible...
Perhaps the right way may well be to drop the resolution to 640x368 (instead of 720x400) and use a 20 quantizer... I like the idea of 1 Disc fits all... though I'm also working on a 2 disc, full resolution (1024x576) version. The complete series is over 10 hours and 34GB... so I guess "H264 is a serious over-achiever".
I've got a few hrs of encoding on the run... so I'll have to check later...
OK... so what you're saying is "BeSweet audio boost, etc is all good... but you can't automate the process into a single job".

Maybe your English isn't so gr8... but I'm seriously clueless about scripts, ogm, etc and while I know demuxing avi is off-the-cards... probably 90% of the people out there are encoding movies from VOB's which have notoriously poor volume and could benefit from something like BeSweet's audio boost.
Dr DivX 2 OSS uses a system of sampling to gauge the necessary audio boost and then implement the change... also good but not quite perfect.

The problems that I was having with being unable to encode audio and the looping problem seem to be related to an old version of avisynth on my computer. I updated it and it started working. Apperantly 0.76 would work with the version avisynth I had and 0.78 wouldn't.

I encoded audio with Nero AAC at a constant bitrate of 160kbps
Which setting is that? I still haven't deciphered the steps on the 0-1 quality scale that's used in the settings.
Sounds awesome... does the entire encode need to be in grayscale to truly benefit ?
I'm keen to encode 'The World at War' and 'The Cold War' series both of which are over 20 hrs long and 'mostly' in B&W... but not completely.
Since you were interested, I'm trying the full colorspace vs. greyscale colorspace encode comparison right now. I have the "full color" one done, but the grayscale one is not encoding. I'll have to do it again and pay more attention, post logs, etc before I see if this is going to work.

directshowsource("c:\my_broken_avi.avi")
with filename changed ofcourse
yes, exactly. Create a txt file with notepad, write directshowsource("c:\my_broken_avi.avi") , save it and rename to test.avs , open the script with virtualdub for more security. If virtualdub don't complain , use this file as input for automkv

@weaver4
looping and clipping ARE fixed
BUT if you want to try first download http://tirnanog.fate.jp/mirror/ffmpeg/ffmpeg.rev8047.7z and put ffmpeg.exe into \exe\besweet folder
then update with this "special build" http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV078c-DLFlannery-2.exe
and please report back!
BHH
EDIT: you need even http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/pthreadGC2.dll in \exe\besweet folder

The AI (artificial intelligence) of AutoMKV is just way out of control... I feel like I'm reliving 2001: A Space Odyssey... I had to re-encode ½ my initial encodes of BoB because AutoMKV insisted on resizing downto 700x400 instead of 720x400... and 1 of the re-encodes was also faulty.
This occurs during batch aswell as individually. Anyway I finished the series... all muxed, burnt and ready to go at Q24.
Since then I've tried full resolution (1024x576)... but AutoMKV insists on 720x576... this happens whether I choose Original, Auto-crop Only or set the resolution Manually.

:) :D :eek:

The Image is up (see original post)... a new batch layout would go a long way towards mass-production.

I tested MKV/X264 and MP4/X264 encodings. BTW I used ffmpeg build 8047 (and the .dll it needs).
Two kinds of (spliced clip) AVS input files:
1. Separate audio-only and video-only files.
2. One video+audio file loaded for both video source and audio track one source.
For the MKV container I had to force 4:3 aspect ratio (but this is not a problem -- rather a feature!)
I tried one with Delay Cut. I suspect that doesn't make any difference for AVS inputs, correct ?
All cases went smoothly with good results.
One feature request: Please add ".avs" to the list of file types in the audio track file browsers.
This looks good! :thanks:

I've done some checking around and have found the lists of cards that support accelerated video decoding for ATI and NVidia. I'll post them here since someone else might find them worthwhile here.
Cards supporting ATI Avivo. (http://ati.amd.com/technology/avivo/products.html)
Cards supporting NVidia Pure Video. (http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo_support.html)
I'm going to grab a GeForce 6600GT off eBay here in the next week. I don't want too spend much on this machine as I'd sorta like to replace it in the future and I don't have a PCI Express motherboard. I hope the fan's not too loud.
mediaplayer classic+ffdshow+haali media splitter worked a little better. CPU usage appeared to be about the same but mediaplayer coped by dropping individual frames in the high action areas instead of freezing up completely until the scene passed like VLC. I haven't had a chance to install Zoom Player.

That's the audio error a couple of us were getting. Update to the current version of AutoMKV (0.78c) and try again. First you must update from 0.78 to 0.78a.
Download this:
http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV078a.rar
unpack it and put "aacgain.exe", "mp3gain.exe", and "VorbisGain.exe" into the \exe\besweet folder. You can throw out the "AutoMKV078a.exe" because you wont need it.
Next download 0.78c here: http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV078c.exe
It's just a new executable, so just throw it into your AutoMKV folder in place of the AutoMKV078.exe you have right now.
Then try again.
This is a bunch of steps so you could also wait for the next all-inclusive release.

I had no problem encoding "Band of Brothers" in "Full Resolution" (ie 1024x576) with Dr DivX... See Dr DivX Image from previous post (below)...
@nx6
I'm compressing the entire 'Band of Brothers' series, with extras onto 1 DVD with maximum quality while maintaining consistency...
I've had problems with DGIndex in the past when trying to create surround sound with Aud-X though only in respect of audio... it converts 5.1 (6 channel) surround to 5.0 (5 channel) surround...(see Manual) which is a problem if you're trying to encode in the full glory of surround sound.
DGIndex (manual)
APPENDIX C: "AC3 5.1" versus "AC3 3/2"
DGIndex reports AC3 5.1 audio as "AC3 3/2" and users sometimes wonder why. The 1 in "5.1" refers to the Low Frequency Effects (LFE) channel.
When 5.1 audio must be played on one or two speakers, the source channels must be "downmixed".
The AC3 specification says that downmixing of the LFE channel is optional. In practice, it is dangerous, because loudspeakers can be overdriven by the full scale low frequency
content of the LFE channel (which is intended for a special speaker called a subwoofer). That's why downmixing of the LFE is almost never implemented.
Encoding 5.1 audio such that it can be played properly on one or two speakers is an art that is seriously complicated by downmixing the LFE channel.
So "3/2" means 5.1 without the LFE (maybe 5.0 would be better terminology, but 3/2 is in common use). Since almost no application downmixes the LFE (including DGIndex),
DGIndex labels the source as "3/2". The LFE is not downmixed because a) it is complex to implement (needs rolloff), b) it is dangerous to downmix it, and c) the LFE is often
avoided anyway by content providers. There are more details in this article.
I really don't want to blame my player, DGIndex or even you... though it would be awesome to arrive at a successfull conclusion... without phoning up President Bush, the Queen of England or Bill Gates for assistance. This may be the only movie or series on the entire planet that wont encode at full resolution but I would still appreciate the help in getting the job done.
I understand that you're merely trying to create a GUI for H264 and that you have to rely on a multitude of 3rd party apps to 'help and assist' that don't allways work well on their own let alone as a team, together in this kind of situation.

I had no problem encoding "Band of Brothers" in "Full Resolution" (ie 1024x576) with Dr DivX... See Dr DivX Image from previous post (below)...
have you ever tried to put 1024 in WIDTH ?
i suppose NO (even if with this value the movie will be autocropped).
For the whatever resolution go on advanced setting check "use manual crop" leave 0 all around and put 1024 and 576 in the botton boxes

the problem here is to understand than you cannot take the application and pretend to get always what you want WITHOUT understanding what all setting mean's. And without searching for more information
The full resolution is achivied with correct AR signaling.

http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV079a_NORIP.rar without dvdfabdecrypter
0.79 Full Package 19/03/2007
ADDED: If a file named "noneroAacEnc.here" is present in \exe\besweet folder , AutoMKV will not ask to download
ADDED: If SoudOut Fail, AutoMKV will try processing audio with DirectShowSource, if directshowsource fail AutoMKV will encode directly the audio file with FFmpeg in mp3 128CBR format. NOTE: if soundout fail must be present some errors in your audio file
FIXED: Several bugs on audio encode
FIXED: Clip warning (thanks to nx6)
FIXED: When working with queue the Start Encoding button is now disabled (suggestion by Shark_jlc)
FIXED: Audio Loop when working with avs audio file (thanks to dlflannery and weaver4)
FIXED: Aacgain is unable to normalize HE_AAC/SBR files ( done with NeroAACEnc NOT in quality mode). Added an AmplifydB(7) to audio script

Congratulations on the release of AutoMKV 079... almost magic.
have you ever tried to put 1024 in WIDTH ?
i suppose NO (even if with this value the movie will be autocropped).
For the whatever resolution go on advanced setting check "use manual crop" leave 0 all around and put 1024 and 576 in the botton boxes
Done that... did that yesterday... even with Manual Resize (see post)... the width reverts to 720. It's as though HD encoding is not supported.
I did mention that many of my 720x400 encodes came out as 700x400 aswell... which seams part of a much more serious problem.
I would send the .ini job logs but they have already been deleted I think.
the problem here is to understand than you cannot take the application and pretend to get always what you want WITHOUT understanding what all setting mean's. And without searching for more information

I know that AutoMKV is fairly new but surely it's not quite necessary to be a rocket-scientist or software engineer to make it work.
I don't think I was trying anything deep or difficult... no audio tracks, no downsizing... a straight (1024x576) H264 conversion with ConstantQuality-crf...
I don't understand all the settings in AutoMKV and I leave them alone though I am willing to try MkvMagic if I the results were to be more promising.
I'm sure many ppl have encoded successfully into HD... but perhaps not with CQ-crf... maybe the problem's in the CQ-crf.xml profile ???
:) :D :rolleyes:

same results. it seems whatever is opening the cmd window immediatly after clicking start encoding is not providing the correct info for the file since the log shows

i noticed its using my 64bit version of the cmd.exe instead of the 32bit version, perhpas thats why it doesnt process whatever commands properly?
instead of runnin thru C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe
it goes thru C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe
seems it is running thru 32bit mode, cuz system32 is for 64bit apps and syswow64 is for 32bit apps (wtf microsoft?!)
"64-bit Windows still uses the c:\windows\system32 directory for native applications—oddly enough, this misnamed directory is for 64-bit apps only! So, 32-bit apps trying to read or write to c:\windows\system32 are redirected to c:\windows\SysWOW64 instead. Similarly, only 64-bit apps can use "c:\Program Files"; 32-bit apps are invisibly redirected to "c:\Program Files (x86)"
so now i'm completely clueless as to why its givin false/mising stats for my file

you have selected an VC1 profile, and the encoder fails. This is can be due to your installation of WVC1 encoder
i suggest to try the "quicker" profile, just to test if wmv7/8/9 is ok
once tested (either positive or negative) read on first post the hint about wvc1

Will do...
I found a (1024x576) BoB 01.mkv encode from last week... looks gr8... will need to be little more focused during encodes.
I tried to modify the <BitrateQuantizer>18</BitrateQuantizer> of ConstantQuality-CRF.xml since I never use 18 but MS Word complains about the change and AutoMKV lists the entire file in only 2 lines (no wrap)...
MS Word - Something about an XSLT conversion...

and now that i've installed WME9, when AutoMKV gets to the step Lets Encode (after Testing Interlace pattern) cmd.exe crashes (regardless of which profile i use). I noticed its running the 64bit version at this step (perhpas why it crashes). the cmd.exe window shows

I uninstaled WME9 and it stopped crashing but still not getting an output file
(on a side note: i tried usin WME9 before and had no luck, hence why i hit up videohelp.com and doom9 for alternatives)

Sorry pal... but why use msword ? notepad/pspad is ok (i use ultraedit)
and (much important) DON'T directly edit the file!!
use the advanced profiles editing, modify the value, AND then check "use this profile" . AutoMKV will use this modified profile
@schizosmurf
yea plays perfectly
again automkv have done a good script
i can suggest to open a thread in http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=54 about Vista and WME/WMCmd.vbs, ask help of Zambelli

That's what I do at the moment... but I'ld rather (modify) change the value to 22 permanently (as a default) and then modify the profile through AutoMKV when needed...
:) :D :eek:
Pascal
OK... get it... make a new modified profile... call it PascalsConsistantQuality.xml and use that...

(I modified a few scripts for random maps in Age of Empires II and Wordpad worked particularly well when Notepad run out of space.)

yes your right, automkv wrote a perfect .avs, i loaded it into WME9 and it spit out a perfect encode.
now if could just figure out why automkv uses the 64bit cmd.exe when it gets to the encode step when it uses the correct 32bit cmd.exe for the others

while the other bat file will lanch simple command line exe (for x264/bautodeint/xvid_encraw...) the wmv bat will lauch the windows shell script interpreter (cscript.exe)
I suppose that cscript.exe (that is bundled with your vista os) that launch WMCmd.vbs (that is the interface to wme ) is for 64bit only...
BHH
EDIT: @salman1 , check your antivirus, and try to lauch mkvmaudio.bat. is it ok ?

I had no problem encoding "Band of Brothers" in "Full Resolution" (ie 1024x576) with Dr DivX... See Dr DivX Image from previous post (below)...
What qualifies 1024 as "full resolution"? The top resolution of DVD is only 720px (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-Video#Visual_data).
Encoding anything higher than that would only mean the encoder is now having to "make up" additional pixel data, which will not increase quality any more than having the decoder upconvert on playback.

It is hard to find buzzqw's individual posts detailing what has changed with each new version.

yea, seems its usin the 64bit cscript.exe (\System32\), which therefore calls the 64bit cmd.exe, instead of the 32bit cscript.exe (\SysWOW64\)
it'd be cool if there was some way to make AutoMKV check for C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cscript.exe and run that one if present and default back to C:\Windows\System32\cscript.exe if not.
Anyways, appreciate all your help. Even though I couldn't get AutoMKV to work for me 100% I am able to get an encode done the way I want with it's help at least. I'll keep an eye on this project in case you get that cscript.exe thing figured out for us 64bit users :P

Would it be possible to add the Changelog to the wiki?
It is hard to find buzzqw's individual posts detailing what has changed with each new version.
What a great idea, if I get bored tomorrow, I'll see if I can't do this.
Well... if you get bored today... take the day off and head for the hills or the beach...
But if you get really excited... try adding the Changelog to the wiki... I'm sure you'll be a lot more inspiring if you're in a good mood.

I'm compressing the entire 'Band of Brothers' series, with extras onto 1 DVD with maximum quality while maintaining consistency...
See Pic (Resolution and Max resize resolution).
You make perfectly good sense and it certainly looks as though you are right... perhaps the (not so clever) Dr is dellusional and lying to us... a sure case of smoke and mirrors... maybe the original DVD was 'padded' since it's sure got 1024x576 pixel resolution (Dimensions)...
What gives... please help... :search:

BTW
I'm doing a 640x360 version of BoB in Q23 which is true 16:9 and nicely scalable on most 1280x1024 PC's... but H262 doesn't seam to like non-multiples of 16 (either width or height).
I can't 'make up my mind' whether I should go with 640x368 or 640x352...

Alright. I'm getting sleepy. Someone else can work on it now. I got to 0.78 (the full package). People more into the nitty-gritty of AutoMKV's details should probably proofread some of what I've done (as converting notes into a more formal changelog isn't easy when I'm not familiar with all the changes listed). The hard part is reducing to the actual essence of the change to the software and not speaking in terms of metaphor or example, while not leaving out too many details about the change.

First, I really like this program. It does a good job, and I love the fact that it works in the background. Now my question: I want to increase the volume of the movies that I’m encoding.
The checkbox for “normalize” doesn’t do enough for my purposes, and I can’t find any other volume settings. Sorry to be dense about this, I realize that since mp3gain.exe, etc. are there that it must be possible, but I don’t see “gain” or “volume” in the Advanced Audio Options. I don’t see anything in the Advanced Settings. The Advanced Profiles Editing seems to be all about the video. I don’t know where else to look or what files to open up.
I’m a newbie, and I barely understand half of this thread, but I’d really appreciate a leg up here. I’ve used other programs to raise the volume, and I’d like to do it with AutoMKV. Perhaps the answer is obvious; I will slap my head and be humbled, but right now I’m lost. Please point me in the right direction.

Do you mean we could only show the changelog from the latest full package (0.79 in this case) through the updates in bulleted form, and then show the previous releases/updates in a more condensed style (just major feature changes, not minor bug fixes) or not at all?

@BixMix
automkv ALREADY normalize the audio of film. Is automkv that use mp3gain to "gain/apply" volume to your mp3 track
Isn't needed you intervent
The "gain" is the maximum SECURE value to apply without introduce clipping (sound distrurbed)
The way to apply MORE gain is to DE-CHECK Normalize AND in last option of advanced audio setting, at right of Pith and none, in the blank space write something like Amplifydb(15) this command force an audio gain of 15 decibel, in this way YOU must choose the gain, since in no more automatic
BETTER way is to install ffdshow, and use it as audio decoder AND check VOLUME, in this way the audio gain is transparent and good to hear
i hope to be clear!

Since H264 recommended encodes with mod 16 dimensions and the guy(s) at DivX recommending padding (see link, Post #6: (http://forums.divx.com/forum/viewTopic.php?id=3532)) I did an experiment...
I did 2 encodes of BoB 02 @ Q23... (640 x 368) and (640 x 360) and the results are quite refreshing.
640 x 368
= 347 661 kb
= 235 520 pixels
size/pixel = (347 661/235 520) = 1.5 kb/pixel
640 x 360
= 347 661 kb
= 230 400 pixels
size/pixel = (347 661/230 400) = 1.5 kb/pixel
There is no difference in efficiency.
However when comparing (720 x 400) @ Q24 and (640 x 360) @ Q23 on a 19inch LCD at fullscreen with particular reference to text in the opening credits ...
(640 x 360) @ Q23 came out a clear winner with superior crispness and clarity... and this despite the fact that the file was 5% smaller...

100% of the frames were DRF 3
AutoGK (Constant Quality 67%)
Filesize 1.75G
99% of the frames were DRF 3
1% of the frames were DRF 2
AutoMKV (ConstantQuality profile, bitrate quantizer of 3)

I've seem to have stumbled upon something else.
I'm trying to re-encode a *.mp4 file (with H.264 video and what I think is mp3 audio).
It starts everything just fine.
But after it encodes the audio track, everything basically just stops. It doesn't continue.
If you want to try it yourself, go to:
http://asfdotcom.net/
Click downloads on the left, then "Bleach" in the right column (should be near the top, 2nd one) then download "Fourth Intro".
Any will do but I know it works with this one. This isn't the exact file I want to re-encode but the same problem happens no matter what.
Thanks :cool:

Awesome job on the Changelog....
Thanks, it still has a ways to go.
"Jeradc" (I assume that's Shark_jlc) and I are discussing the style for the individual bullet points. So some of the entries may have to be rewritten to follow an agreed upon style. Plus, there's still grammar editing for many entries, names of other software packages need to be changed to fit capitalization across the entire document (I've read at least four different ways of writing 'DGIndex' and 'AutoMKV'). Also it might make sense to change the subsection layout. I'd like to see them divided by full releases (ones that are all inclusive and don't require replacing files in an existing install), but it seems those releases happened quite often in AutoMKV's early history.
why can't everything be "Open Source"... there would be no need for copyright... we could live together in harmony... and there would probably be no need for any wars either.
I suppose it's just a fools paradise.
It is. There would no financial incentive to create new content, so the amount of new content would drop way down. This wouldn't mean the end to just stupid marketing-driven drivel like reality TV shows, it would mean lots of genuine content would disappear as well. People who would normally write, draw, sing, ect would be too busy working a regular job to earn a living to be able to focus on their art the way a professional artist would.
I couldn't help but feel a little hypocritical in that post, as most of what is done in this forum is a violation of the DMCA (bypassing DVD encryption to encode the video, ect). But it's done with the idea we are using our own legally purchased DVDs and obtained video files for the purpose of better enjoyment of the content. I'd like to (in the future) build an HTPC and have all by anime DVDs ripped to MKV files on it, so I can pull up any episode VOD-style from a Myth frontend, among other things.
But when someone comes on and points us to a site hosting clearly copyrighted content from a TV network as the source files they're using it attracts too much attention to activities like these.

I don't think you should get too 'hypocritical' on us just yet... It's not like we're encouraging people to "do drugs", "commit murder" or "go to the colliseum and watch till-death duals"...
For all the piracy that AutoMKV creates or tacitlly supports... movie companies, cinemas and video-cam manufacturers
are benefitting from an "increasingly aware, interested and excited consumer market"...

CQ encoding mean that all I and P frames are at constant quantitizer, the B frames are NOT at constant quantitizer other values is taken like Quantitizer ratio and Quantitizer offset
<BQuantRatio>162</BQuantRatio>
The "Quantizer ratio" setting determines how many more times the B-frames should be compressed compared to P-frames (the higher the value, the higher the quantizer setting and therefore the more compressed the frame is).
<BQuantOffset>100</BQuantOffset>
The "Quantizer offset" setting determines the quantizer value to be added to B-frames compared to surrounding P-frames (so a setting of "1.00" would add "1.00" to the quantizer value of the B-frame, again the higher the quantizer, the more compression used).

Thank you for helping me breakdown my brick wall. Now I just have to climb over the rubble, and I have a feeling that a better understanding of command line stuff would help me do that.
Don't forget about downloading BeLight (http://belight.corecodec.org/) (A very nice, easy to use, GUI for BeSweet).

@weaver4
i will change the CQ profile, thanks for suggestion!
Is it possible to change the profile to do this?
yes, change the value of parameters to this
<BQuantRatio>100</BQuantRatio> and leave <BQuantOffset>0</BQuantOffset> as is
Wonderfull... the Vatican says "Miracles do happen" and they're right !!!

I used avinaptic, which buzz told me about.
I want good quality video, I don't care what size it comes out. So I use CQ, but I am about to just start coding 1000kbs for 640 9x5 movies and 1300 for 640 4:3 movies and forget it.
Please don't 'forget it' ... I really think CQ is the 'way to go' if you can just get it to work properly.
Awesome Utility (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123076) ... though I'm just wondering why you prefer the Xvid container over the Mkv model ???

What does it all mean...
It certainly looks like a variety of statistical quantizers are being used... all the way from Q10 to Q34... that's tragic !!!
I'm keen to try the <BQuantRatio>100</BQuantRatio> and <BQuantOffset>0</BQuantOffset> settings... but the H264 profiles don't have that command at all and don't even know where best it should go even it does...

I agree with buzz: If you need stand-alone-player capability then you should be using xvid-avi. If you are not concerned about that then you should use x264-mkv or x264-mp4. Unless you have a underpowered system, then stay with xvid-avi.

@xmcnuggetx
no :( since isn't a problem of automkv but vista and WMCmd.vbs (again ask zambelli on new alternative container forum)
FYI I fixed this in Vista by turning off DEP. You can do so by following this article:
http://vista.beyondthemanual.com/2006/11/vista_tip_turn_off_data_execut.html

when you have the dvd on your hard disk, start automkv, on input poit to video_ts.ifo
select your container, codec, profile, audio and subs,select disk size and width, then click start
@xmcnuggetx
thanks to the info !
so is automkv and wmv fuctional under vista ? (just for conferm)

It is a crf encoding at Q23 but is it possible to have a totally flat quantizer... ?
I notice the Average DRF = 25.505621 with a huge swing between Q10 and Q34 ...
It's probably pretty standard stuff and I don't know any better myself but I'ld be keen to try a straight Q23... and c what it looks like.

i have dvd that i want to do 2 cd rip with avi container with audio of 128kbps/s is that possible with this software?
Before you start, make sure you have all the required software installed. You need more than just AutoMKV, you also need AVISynth and XviD at least (see the first post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=854221#post854221) of this thread).
Insert your DVD.
In AutoMKV, select the drive in the upper right, then click "Check DVD Drive"
AutoMKV should select the largest IFO file (which will correspond to the main movie on the DVD).
Set your output location (where the video files should go). Use a hard drive with at least 15GB of free space to handle all the DVD temp files, etc.
Change the container on the right hand side to AVI (it says MKV right now). Codec should change to XVID.
Set encoding profile, remember that higher qulaity profiles will take longer to process.
In the area labeled "Audio Track 1" select your audio track. I recommend you use a 2-ch Stereo track unless you are actually planning on playing the file on a 5.1 channel system.
Change audio format to LAME , STEREO, and quality to 128.
Leave other options on AUTO or however they are set if you don't know what they do.
On Output File/Name Options area change disk setting to "2 CD" this will give you one 1400 MB file, not two 700MB ones. You can also enter a specify a name for the final movie file (you don't need to type the .avi).
Now hit Start Encoding, in the lower right.
DVDFab Decrypter will open and start ripping the DVD to your hard disk. If it gives you an error about the path where it is trying to save the DVD, just change it and then hit start on it's window. A minor hiccup, it will remember next time.
After DVD Decrypter finishes, DGIndex will start and begin processing. You may not see a window telling you what it is doing, as long as your hard disk is churning, it is fine.
Audio will be processed after that.
Then Video (this will take several hours depending on the specs of your computer).
Then the parts will all be put together in the file.
When AutoMKV finishes, on the "Log" tab of AutoMKV it will say "Finished Job" at the bottom of the log.
Now go look in the folder you had defined as the output, and you should see a file with the name you picked.avi.
@buzzqw:
I thought subtitles on AVI required the "burn in" option be used.

Hey the program has been runnning fantastic and I loved it under XP but now I am running vista and I have problems. It does the Indexing fine I think, but any step where it opens the cmd window (testing interlace pattern, lets encode etc) It just flashes the cmd, closes it immediatly and moves to the next step. So it never does any actual encoding... any ideas? Thanks!
BTW Ive also tried running it under compatibility mode, still does same thing
@RipcordAFF
Bautodeint.exe NEED a yv12 decoder installed
Install the Koepi XviD Build (link on first post)
Hey buzzqw, I tried what you said, and it still didnt work. It still flys through the steps and only flashes up the command windows. Any ideas? Thanks

^ i have dvd ripped in my hd drive also i have done d2v file so and the audio. what is input file then?
can i put d2v file as an input or the vob file? or i have to do others than that? thx
I don't know. I told you in PM I'm rather new to most video encoding. I don't use AutoMKV just for video encoding and muxxing, I let it handle everything (except ripping if I'm using an episodic DVD). From your earlier posts I got the idea you were just starting and you had a DVD you wanted to rip to a specific format, not that you had a bunch of stuff already encoded separately.
Edit: You can use the VOB as the input. I'm not sure how to specify a separate audio file for audio input, but I think it can be done, though. Someone else will have to chime in.

FYI I fixed this in Vista by turning off DEP. You can do so by following this article:

tried this and still same, with cscript.exe crashing

Buzz I tried this, installed the WM 9 encoder, along with hotfix, and tried turning off DEP. All nothing. The CMD windows just close as soon as they open. If i really really watch them, they flash an error in the box right before they close, but i dont have enough time to read it....Any help? Thanks!

Alright, AutoMKV is giving me Script Host error messages again. It was working fine it seemed on 0.78b, but something changed between that and the most recent version.

Ah, I think I have figured it out. It seems AutoMKV does not like it when the temp folder (with the ripped DVDs in it) is outside its own folder! I had moved it outside since I had installed 0.79a but still had 0.78b, and when I tried to run 0.78b I got errors on it, too. But after moving the temp folder into the 0.79a folder, now a job completed. :)
Very interesting. I wonder if this was the source of some of the issues I was having before when I first started trying to use AutoMKV.

You may wont to take your encoding to the next level and mux your tracks manually which will allow you to include any audio or even video (3D Stereoscopic Movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy) viewed through Shutter Glasses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCD_shutter_glasses)) tracks.
Download MKVToolnix (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/) which includes the MkvMerge GUI and browse through the MkvMerge User Guide (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/doc/mkvmerge-gui.html) (It's pretty much plane sailing after that).
Good Luck and have a good one...

Ironically, MKVToolnix is what I tried before I tried MkvMagic, which what led me to AutoMKV.
I'm just looking for something fairly self contained and automated for now. Once I can get AutoMKV "jumping through hoops" maybe I'll look into it.
I'll assume you're talking to Salman1 since he has all the pieces waiting to be muxxed.

Any word on this yet Buzz? I love your program, but I cant seem to get it to work at all under vista....any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried all your suggestions (page 69) any some other's suggestions (previous page), nothing worked....thanks man!

this error is often due to wrong framerate of avi file...
is movie.avi in temp directory playable ?
if so try manual muxing with virtualdub OR reencode (with xvid/avi) AND in advanced settings set use DivXMux

Can this tool be used to convert an MKV file to a WMV, so i can stream it to my 360? I've tried a few times, and i think the WMV Encoder is not working. The window displays some error about a profile, but i can't read what it is.

Have you any thoughts on Psychovisual Enhancement ?
I don't know whether you ever used the EKG in Dr DivX 1 but basically the idea was to decrease the bitrate in areas the eyes wouldn't notice anyway.
How do you think this impacts on Constant Quality encodes since all is equal ?
I was just wondering whether it is not in fact better to vary the Quantiser (as is happening) for a better overall Psychovisually pleasing result.
What's your take ?

@fenomeno83
since your source is from sat , i suppose is in TS format, in that case is much better to use projectX.
After loanding your file, go in advanced setting and check Use ProjectX (and leave de-check Use delay cut)
@PlayWithFire
launch from dos box movie_wmv.bat and spot the error
also read the hint on first post

In the Wiki it shows VBR as one of the pull-downs for Lame. I only seem to have ABR and CBR -- even when I put it on max quality. Why?
buzzqw

the new soundout plugin doesn't support well pure VBR mp3, so the new default is ABR (average bitrate around your bitrate selected)
