hmm, getting back to audio. I regularly encounter audio that seemingly can't be encoded via soundout correctly (either nic or directshow). It encodes, but it seems to be encoding all silence. End up with a file of like 3-4MB (for over 100 minutes of audio).
If I do borrow a page from autogk, and do an azid to convert to the ac3 to wav, run normalize on the wav, and then use nero on the wav, I get a normal 60MB file that is fine.
any ideas? Any chance (in hell?) you could support an azid->normalize->nero method. Tried 2-Pass w/ its output to wav file, and it had the same issue.

I have some questions:
1 - MP4 cant handle AC3 audio?
2 - Can i use the same video without re-encode? (ex: i have a mkv h264 video and i want to pass it to a avi, can i do it without re-encode?)

@spotter
feel free to use autocrop/resize or manual crop :rolleyes:
BHH
hmm, well autocrop seems to only crop on the LEFT/RIGHT (is that true?) Not on the top/bottom of a 2.4:1 aspect ratio video (say Harry Potter 5)
For manual crop, would it be possible to add a live preview (ala gknot and others so one can see what one is doing?)

@spotter
even the wav file for 2 pass with nero is silenced?
other way is to use ffmpeg, with custom bat
look at custom.bat in \exe\besweet
autocrop: is autocrop.. in all dimension, up, down, left, right
also ... there is a preview button on advanced settings.. near manual crop
@red5goahead
tryed check "use projectX" ?
and yes.. a link can be interesting :)

First, I'd like to thank you so much for your program because I finally got video working on my 360/PS3.
But...
There's no audio. The original .mkv had a 5.1 .dts audio file, but I've managed to convert that to a stereo .wav. I choose the .wav file as the Audio Track 1, but when I hit Start Encoding it tells me that the audio "wasn't processed right. Should I quit? Y/N"
The video file comes out perfect, but no audio... I've tried it multiple times.
Here are my settings:
http://i13.tinypic.com/6xgu3hf.png
Also, does this program support Quad core CPU's? Will it encode faster?
Thanks.

Hi, buzzqw!!
First of all, thank you for your wonderfull little app. called AutoMKV, it's fantastic!!
I have a question about resizing: i would like AutoMKV to determine the best width for me; but i don't want it to do any cropping. How do i do that?
:thanks:
Oh yes, and felice Anno Nuovo a Te!! :)

are you sure that wav file is ok ?
try playing it with media player, also launch virtualdub and drag&drop on it mkvmaudio.avs (on \temp folder)
you should get a message
you can also try this: launch automkv, load your sample mkv, and use the mkv as audio, then in advanced settings check "use ffmpegsource", and retry encoding
and yes, x264 and xvid (but much more x264) are fully multiprocessor encoder
@maja_the_bee
no, isn't possibile to do automatic resize BUT keeping black bar (and have little sense... imho)
happy new year! (anche a te!)

With ProjextX it work. With delaycut sometimes the audio is not present , sometimes crash and create a huge file to fill hard disk (also I'll try to create a little file to test it).
You have pm for the test of no audio with delaycut and correct audio with projectx with the same file.

yea, thanks for the pm!
i know, delaycut can be sometimes picky.. but overall for mpeg2 stream (not ts) is affidable.

for the ps3 you can choose mp4 with AAC for the sound. Max file lenght is 4 gigs.
what you can do to pass that is this :
automkv : MKV + ac3
mkv2vob : -> vob. use can rename it xxx. m2t it will play on the PS3 without problem.
BUT don't forget to choose the profile PS3_41.xml the 5.1 level is not compatible with the ps3.

@buzzqw is it possible to add a DRF analysis in a pre-process ?
explanations :)
I encoded a movie to 1 DVD, but the result was a movie of 3.3gigs. I reencode the movie with a higher bitrate and got the same result. I checked the output movie with aninaptic, and 80% of the movie was using QF10 and it's the smaller value in my command line .
so is it possible to add a pre-encoding process that will take x% of the movie and encode it. Check if the value hit the supposed movie size, if not do a DRF.. if the DRF hit the smaller value.. just use a smaler value in the command line do again a sample to get a adjusted bitrate.
all that in a option (checkbox. we don't have to use that each time.. but it could help when it needed)
what do you think ?

I just started down the path of converting DVD's with AutoMKV and I'm having a problem achieving a perfect 1:1 PAR. I think I've tried every option in AutoMKV - anamorphic, resizing automatic, autocrop only, manual resize, checking and not checking ITU resize, keeping black borders, cutting black borders, you name it.
I use avinaptic to check.
Sometimes I get perfect 3:2 = 1.5 PAR if I don't cut anything, but most of the time it turns out close to 1:1, but not exact.
Here are some examples with the pertinent snippet from avinaptic

Media Player Classic will play all these fine and they appear to be correct AR. Of course, MPC compensates for almost anything.
My ideal is to convert DVD's without a loss of resolution and without black bars, in perfect 1:1 PAR. So if it's a 16:9 anamorphic movie, unanamorphic it first, set PAR 1:1 and upscale resolution if necessary. As you can see from the megui sample, if it's a 1.78, 1.85 or 2.35 movie, the FAR/DAR will reflect that nice and clean.
Is this something achievable in AutoMKV?
-Robert
Edit: I looked briefly at the movie.avs and time.avs scripts that are doing the movie resizing and they seem to have a lot of automated math. I imagine that is causing the rounding errors. Can we simplify that? Or perhaps when the value is so close to a common value, assume it is and fix it? (ie. .96+ = 1.0 or 1.8444 = 1.85)

in autoMKV you can split in file in the target size. I think it's something like "5 4000" not sure.
but there are tools to split files too.. look for them.

It's actually the other way around - chunk size first and then number of chunks. Check out the wiki here: http://automkv.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/Help:Contents#Step_4_-_Set_Disk_Settings
Of course that's only really useful when trying for a target size I believe when encoding which I'm gather you haven't done. Survivant001's advice to look for other tools to split without re-encoding may be more what you are looking for in this case anyway.

As ever offer I modify the values of anime.lvl to operate well with deen Beta 1 (which is most used in Automkv, anime.lvl currently uses the parameters of the beta-2 deen), this use a soft temporary (and space) filtering FluxsmothST, resizing and then a space filtering deen("a2d"), finally filtered the high frequencies with DCTFilter. I tried fairly and in the anime good quality will not harm the details, in the low-quality eliminates noise without harming the details and the compressibility increases well, try and tell me.
When the source is very bad i also put in Advanced Profiles, Advanced AviSynth DGDecode_Debloc (cpu = 4)
@buzzqw AutoMKV 0.93a not remenber DGDecode_Debloc(cpu=4) in jobs, Although it appears in the ini of the job dont do it.

I changed base.avs and I setmtmode (2.0) and setmemorymax (384) after # loadpluginstart, it work perfectly achieves 100 fps in a movie filtering with spresso, other filters are achieves a 55% increase in fps.
If is possible can you upgrade version of HybridFuPP to 0.98a which is compatible with mt2 and I love the resizing - filtering that his make

There are tons of posts and information on Doom9 about aspect ratio, and the math to convert PAL/NTSC DVD's can be a little daunting, which is why I rely on tools such as this or Megui to do the heavy lifting. If my post above was wrong, or if perhaps I'm just using the existing options in AutoMKV wrong, please let me know.
After I get that squared away, I have to figure out if anamorphic is worth it! :confused:

As a kid I used to practically live in the cinema (before TV in South Africa, 1975) and anamorphic movies have an almost magic allure.
The concept was brilliant and is still ever popular in certain HD video cameras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDV) which use 1440x1080 anamorphic Mpeg2 (expandable to 1920x1080).
That said, H264 offers a clean slate and the opportunity to 'clean-up' Mpeg2 movies and re-code into an endless combination of resolution and framerate (with only minor limitations like MOD 2 cropping and MOD 16 w&h).
I also prefer the square-pixel strategy and while many encoders crop and up-size to to anamorphic format (720x576 PAL) or resize to 864x486... I have settled on 800xh for regular movies (after cropping) and 720xh for animations (with a combination of Q20 and Q22 depending on quality, age, extras or B&W). The odd NTSC DVD is resized accordingly and Inverse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecine) Tele (http://neuron2.net/LVG/telecining2.html)cine (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechold/avsivtc.html) applied where possible.
I have also found problems with "rounding errors" and since I manually encode the audio with BeSweet HEv2 profile, I simply enter the AR into MKVmerge GUI downto 4 decimal places (after I've done all the calcs).
Actually, I manually setup the d2v files for AutoMKV with DGIndex aswell... which has been a whole lot of fun but clearly you would prefer a slightly more automated, robust and precise encoding environment.
I hope you come right with your perfect 1:1 PAR (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1081829#post1081829) and perhaps OSS technology will allow us to integrate 5.1 surround and improved audio functionality into AutoMKV at some future point in time.

I am not good with the filters, it is only the old method of test and error, in relation to fft3dgpu for films can use Diego7_5_FFT3DGPU_King_Of_Queens.lvl, but you have to put in the folder filter of AutoMKV fft3dgpu.dll to anime better use Anime_Slow_Denoise. lvl I upload, because in my opinion deen is better to anime than fft3dgpu, in addition fft3dgpu is very slow.

Big fan of automkv for a while now, just 1 request if its possible.

it's an hard work anamorphic... but is quite done :)
here the "trimmed" script
last=movie.Crop(0,72,720,432)
fixed_aspect = 2.431041
out_width = 656
out_height = 272
SimpleResize(out_width,out_height)
at end the output script, encoding script and muxing script will be very similar to MeGui
the delay can be "fixed" by DelayCut or DelayAudio or Fixed in Muxing (as AutoGK)
HybridFuPP to 0.98a : try ... and report if working :)
resmovie.avs when running xvidsingle it show 704x528, : it's the script for checking autoresize.. isn't the final used script
Avs as a source- audio is not properly encoding, AutoMKV create mkvaudio.avs and trying processing fixed1.avs : fixed
When I encoded audio to mp3(open mkvaudio with AvsP.exe and process it), and select as video avs, as audio my mp3, AutoMKV says:: i will check about.. but is probably that some audio hack (support files) will be removed
This not work whith QMF_adaptative_lvl, Since apparently Trim the line of lvl at 150 characters: seem fixed...

Strange: Since I installed the latest build, I haven't been able to rip a single Video_ts to mkv:-( It was also happening intermitently with the last build, but usually it worked on retry.
It seems to start O.K., but when I come back after the rip is finished, there is no mkv file.
Here are my logs. Any ideas?

Attachments can take a while to get approved, you're normally better off pasting them in your post inside CODE tags.
Are you talking about ripping VIDEO_TS.IFO / VIDEO_TS.VOB or just the VIDEO_TS directory generally? I didn't think AutoMKV ever worked on the former - think there's a few posts discussing that which I contributed to from memory (will try to find it).

It seems to be working now (it's at 12.%), after I selected the VTS_01_0.IFO file in the Video_TS folder.
When I tried selecting the VTS_01_1.VOB file, it didn't appear to be showing the correct audio stream, and it didn't show any available subtitles. Who knows, maybe my files are screwed up, but they shouldn't really be (ripped with DVDShrink.)
I was doing it wrong before, apparently:-) Two versions ago, I was just selecting the VIDEO_TS.IFO and it worked fine, but the last version was a bit pickier and it would not produce mkvs intermittently, and this current one just refuses to do them if I select the VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Anyway, it looks like it's smooth sailing again now. [Wrong. See below]
Thanks again.

I'll try ripping it to the local drive.
But, this is a new change, or am I dreaming that I was able to rip a whole bunch of movies to the same location (NAS) in the previous builds?
P.S. It worked fine when I ripped to an attached USB drive, instead of to my NAS. BTW, it works perfectly when I select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (as long there is only one sequence of VOBs, if more than one, it rips only the first sequence:-)

If you want total control of your wayward Vob's... consider loading them up directly into DGIndex (AutoMKV093\exe\DGIndex\DGIndex.exe).
As long as the VOBs have the same resolution/format... you can keep on adding... and then select the section ([...]) of your choice (nice for cutting out bits and pieces). I've loaded up multiple DVD's from the same series into a single MKV... perfect for your "all in one" strategy (hopefully MKV will be releasing tools for chapters and menus, later this month) !
Save project... and then load the d2v file into AutoMKV (and 1 or 2 audio tracks).
It's a little more complicated if you plan to include subtitles.

Great tip, delacroixp.
I played with it and have a couple of questions:
1. How do I get subtitles with it?
2. Does it affect the quality of the final rip (I see options to force "film," select different iDCT algorithms, etc., which makes me think that it does processing while combining the VOBs - would running the resulting file through AutoMKV mean processing twice?)
Thanks.

where will you see the final avi? ps3/xbox360? from what i've been reading here the only possible way is by using ffdshow or adding the subtitle in the avs, both ways you'll have permanent subs
textsub("subtitle.srt")
ive read that both ps3/xbox360 firmware update makes it possible to play divx (divx container) if the support is complete you can have switchable subs, altough automk converts to avi(xvid) you'll still need another step to mux in the subs and create a *.divx file. Dr divx would be a good choice since it does all that in a few clicks.
all in all, it depends where you will watch the video

Normally, DGIndex does a straight analysis and reports on the state of your VOB's... demuxing the audio tracks at the same time. It's simply preprocessing to get the job ready for X264.
That said, DGIndex has tremendous depth and power to modify and otherwise improve your final encode.
Force Film is a case in point... gr8 for inversing the telecine of NTSC movies backto 24 fps and saving you a whole bunch of bits and bytes (the extra frames were just lazing about anyway).

I'm having a hard time finding the correct button to press in advanced settings to accomplish what I want. I believe it may be a manual process or number I have to type in, but I think Megui does it automatically.
I want to take an NTSC 720x480 DVD, which is actually an anamporhic 2.35:1 movie and keep the anamorphic flag intact without any resizing or cropping. In this movie's case, yes, there will still be some black bars that get encoded. I've come up with all kinds of variations of that with AutoMKV.
If I play a sample of the original DVD in Media Player Classic, it shows the expanded "video size" of 853x480 even though the encoded MPEG2 video is DVD standard 720x480 29.97fps.
1) What's the proper procedure to leave anamorphic 16:9 intact when going from DVD to an MKV?
2) As an alternate method, would it be better for overall compatibility to encode it PAR 1:1 at 853x480? (Even so, I can't get AutoMKV to do that either)

It may be a plan to do everything manually a couple of times untill you fully understand the process involved.
I laid out a 4 point plan (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1075130#post1075130) to get the job done (PAL 16:9).
:):devil::D
Pascal
ps
Nothing beats the original for sheer prestine perfection... any recode will cause some downgrade in quality.
That said, getting rid of black matte and resizing to PAR 1:1 is already an improvement of sorts.
853x480 is all "smoke and mirrors"... 720x480 has only 345,600 pixels which have been stretch to 409,440 pixels. You can stretch and upscale a 640x480 picture anyway you choose but the fact remains that you only have 307,200 original pixels to work with.
A "720x480 anamorphic" to "PAR 1:1 square pixel" conversion = 768x432 (Mod16 & 16:9 @ 331,776 pixels... pretty close to 345,600).
(After cropping... your pixel count will probably drop below 331 kp anyway)

Buzz:
I have tried at least a dozen WMV encoding solutions, and this one spanks the rest hands down.
With respect, may I ask why the 48Khz sampling rate audio is no longer (or not) available in the Zune profiles? As 99% of my source material is 48Khz, doesn't it make sense to encode at the same rate? I'm kind of a green horn at this stuff, but wouldn't the pitch on a 44Khz encode be off as a result of the lower sampling rate? Zune is quite capable of 48Khz. In fact, while experimenting, I tried the generic 1 pass WMV9 profile, and inadvertently chose 128kbps, 48Khz, 24 bit audio. Incredibly, Zune took it without converting. Granted, there would be no benefit to upsampling 16 bit audio, but curious nonetheless.
Thanks for a fine product; well worth a trip to PayPal.

I'll see what I can come up with in regards to an official spec sheet - but I've found that it is much more capable than the specs indicate. I know for certain that I synchronized two clips with 192kbps, 48Khz WMAPro.
When you connect the Zune and add clips, it'll do one of two things: Sync, or convert to a compatible format. Both of those clips synced and played without issue. I can't image a practical application for high resolution audio beyond 192 and 16 bit though...at least not for video clips.
It seems pretty particular about video bitrate...you can't go much beyond 800kbps without it wanting to convert.

As always, great work, you're totally the man in so many ways. I have one quick question:
I'm using an x264 Constant_Quality profile with an 18 quantizer. I kept that constant and I tried adjusting the Specify Quality value in the Advanced Settings, but that does not seem to affect the size/quality of the CQ profile at all. I was just wondering if that was normal. Is the quantizer the only way to directly adjust CQ quality (aside from AQ, filters, etc.) ?
Thanks.
buzzqw
7th January 2008, 21:45
specify quality have priority over constant quantitizer
if you "specify the quality" , the cq you selected (in pop up window) is ignored
just use one or other
.. the main difference between "specify quality" and crf profile is that "specify quality" will use the actual profile selected but will apply a crf encoding
so you can turn the "1 pass fastet" i a very fast crf encoding
or use the "insane" to use always a crf encoding, always 1 pass, but with "insane" settings... slow
best regards

if you "specify the quality" , the cq you selected (in pop up window) is ignored
just use one or other
That's what I thought too, but I tried encoding a movie with a CQ profile at 18 quantitizer at 90% "specified quality" and then I did the EXACT same thing only this time at 100%, again 18 quantitizer and everything else exactly the same, and I got the EXACT same result.
So, it seems to me that the "specified quality" is the one that gets ignored when you use it with a pure CQ profile ??

Hi,
I'm trying to encode 2 audio tracks into output file.
The first one encodes fine, but after a .aac file is generated for the second track the application has an error and asks me if I want to go ahead without audio or not (the child process), then after clicking No, it goes ahead and converts to aac with Nero Digital but overwrites the first one.
Can you please fix this naming issue in a future release?
Thanks,
steveski

@Encoder888
my bad. i have fixed this issues, the constant quality profile is indipendent from specify quality options.
The "specify quality" trigger crf encoding only for 1 pass or 2 pass encoding. :o

But you did not use FFMpeg.exe anywhere here, right? I'm not familiar with what all this stuff is doing all I know is that in output in both of my cases FFmpeg.exe was given wrong parameters, for example command below will fail becouse -o is not valid parameter. AutoMKV supply wrong parameter to FFMPeg.exe which causing it not to produce movie.avi and error after that.
15:22:23 FFmpeg.exe String: "C:\Program Files\automkv\exe\BeSweet\ffmpeg.exe" -threads 4 -i "C:\downloads\The.Kingdom\The.Kingdom.2007.1080p.HDDVD.x264-ESiR.sample.mkv" -vcodec libxvid -bf 2 -b 98787000 -s 1920x816 -r 23.976 -o "C:\Program Files\automkv\temp\movie.avi"

Just made another run, log below. This is with latest of everything. See FFMpeg string output as

then mux the video file movie.avi with audio.ac3 already extracted

I'd rather wait for complete solution then do this command line stuff.
So in next build I would be able to use AutoMKV to convert to XVID while preserving original audio using FFMPeg?
How can I find out why DirectShow fails on my system, so I would not have to use FFMpeg.

This made my screen to scroll horizontally since there is no wrapping, how this make it's more readable?
Indentation/layout is maintained and the 'sequence of events' or the 'overall scope of the program execution' is more easily understood... even if you need to scroll to the right to read one or two lines.
I guess it's a programming thing... layout, whitespace and meaningfull variables can do more for a programme than tagging one command after another eventhough it makes no difference to a computer (spagetti code (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=spaghetti+code)).
It's easier to read and understand a book with proper paragraphs, layout and punctuation !

my bad. i have fixed this issues, the constant quality profile is indipendent from specify quality options.
The "specify quality" trigger crf encoding only for 1 pass or 2 pass encoding. :o
Okay, that's great, it actually makes more sense this way. Just out of curiosity, did that get fixed in 0.93a or 0.93 ? I know it's a strange question, but I'd like to know (long story), please let me know if possible ;))
Thx & keep up the good work.

Is there any good tutorial out there for AutoMKV?
I'm encoding some HD content into H.264 and would like to know more details on the different quality profiles and encoding times such as 2 pass balanced, 2 pass better quality, 2 pass extreme, insane, etc.
I also have some 2:35 anamorphic HD content and wanted to know if its possible to re-encode to non-anamorphic 16:9 and will this cause aspect ratio issues? AutoMKV says its a MOD16 resize.
Also, is there a way to tell autoMKV I would only like to encode the first 2 mins of the movie so I can then check the result and quality without having to wait 5-10 hours each time :(
Thanks

Anyone know which filter would work best with a sports game. I was looking at MipSmooth(movieHQ2). I know it is a matter of opinion, but which ones should I be focusing on. Also interested in which resizefilter to pick. How do you determine which filters you should be using? I guess it is based on the content so my content is a 720p or 1080i ts of a football game.

Looks like the command line is not converting the audio from 6 channel (which is what it probably is) to 2 channel.

I second this request. I realize everything included is AVISynth filters, but is there a FAQ somewhere on all the pros and cons of each?

I've been using AutoMKV to convert big .mkv video to smaller .mkv video for PDA playing.
I usually burn subtitle (the subtitle is embended as a text stream in source .mkv file), it worked very well. However, today it stops working. The subtitle is not burned into the final video (I did check 'burn subtitle' in advanced settings tab), although the source file plays fine with subtitle (MPC with CCCP codecs).
I guess I messed up some directshow filter settings. Does anyone know how to make 'burn subtitle' works? Many thanks.

There's still one thing I don't know how to do with automkv.
Let's say I have a 16:9 film
If I say encode anamorphic, original size, I end up with a 853x480 encode. With no black bars, as it's the full image size. This is also the size of the dvd if played in mplayerc.
Now let's say I have a 2.35:1 film.
This is going to have black bars in the film. If I encode it anamorphic, original size, I end up with the same 853x480 encode, but it's encoding black bars.
So, I say, "autocrop". I don't want it to resize, but automkv seems to insist on doing that (to try and maintain AR I think). I end up with something larger than 853 wide (though less than 480 high, which makes sense as it cropped some).
All I want to do is auto crop the black bars, encode it at the normal 853 width, no resizing has to be done and no futzing around with AR as 853 x (480 - cropping, or around 360+ on average) is what I want. However, if I try to crop manually, automkv insists on a mode 2, 4, 8... divisor, which doesn't let me get the 853 width and it seems to want to insist on using a resizing filter.
Shouldn't this cropping be simple to do? why can't I figure it out?

Hello. I just thought I'd pop in and mention this:
I did an encode a couple days ago with the current version. The source was a pre-ripped DVD on my HD, and the output was x264+AAC+external subs in an MKV. The muxing failed to run, and after looking things over I realized the muxing batch file was looking for an audio track called "audio.mp3", which of course since I'd used the Nero AAC encoder for audio the file was actually "audio.mp4".
I fixed the batch file and the finished movie came out fine. But I thought that might interest you, buzzq.

in advanced settings, on last avs script, write
trim(0,7500) for first 5 minutes
@TheResidentEvil
try TTempSmooth()
@hw360
use the "Burn Subtitile" for permanent print of subs on movie
@spotter
try with 0.95 beta 2
. However, if I try to crop manually, automkv insists on a mode 2, 4, 8... divisor, which doesn't let me get the 853
use "Force Mux" option
@nx6
maybe encoding audio falied and automkv trigger the ffmpeg encoding

Buzz,
When issue with inability to copy original audio while using FFMpeg be fixed? I can not use AutoMKV for last month becouse of that and there are no other tools which will allow me to copy original audio and convert MKV to DivX.

Hey gang. Be very careful with filenames. AutoMKV does not like filenames with a bunch of periods in it like:
The.Kingdom.2007.1080p.HDDVD.x264-ESiR.sample.avi
Try
The-Kingdom-2007-1080p-HDDVD-x264-ESiR-sample.avi

in advanced settings, on last avs script, write

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!! this a HUGE time savings for me. Again, AutoMKV is amazing. thanks!

Is it Auto MKV x264 video stream compliant to this interesting thread?
x264 Encoding Options for Hardware Compatibility & DXVA
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=972503
Often in avmagazine.it forum we talk about poor compatibility of mkv avc1/x264 files and new card Ati 2x000,3x000 and nvidia.
Could be usefull a clear reference in AutoMKV for this. An option like "Make compliant to Ati,Nvidia DirectX Video Acceleration"

There is another thread on Doom9 which echoes the same thing. All we need in AutoMKV (just like megui) is profiles which depict the recommended settings.
I've already made my own for AutoMKV.

Also, is there a way to tell autoMKV I would only like to encode the first 2 mins of the movie so I can then check the result and quality without having to wait 5-10 hours each time :(
in advanced settings, on last avs script, write
trim(0,7500) for first 5 minutes
Alternatively... if you want total control of your choice of encoding section/segment (intro's can be misleading at times)... consider loading the file directly into DGIndex (AutoMKV095\exe\DGIndex\DGIndex.exe).
Select the section ([...]) of your choice...
Save project... and then load the d2v file into AutoMKV (skipping audio if you so prefer).

Hi,
Log is below, I'm converting x264 MKV to DivX AVI with constant quality setting and I got 1,5 GB AVI file out of 9 GB original MKV file while usually I was getting the same size of output and input files.
What can be causing this? Resultant file is 1.2 Mbps, 1920x816

sorry for the long post.
I have read this entire post over the last few days looking for answers to my questions and so far I have come up empty handed. So let me tell you what I am trying to do with autoMKV so you get a grasp on my issues.
First autoMKV has converted a ton of DVD's over to xvid for me with AC3 5.1 and EXCELLENT picture quality, so I know it works and it works VERY WELL!!! I am playing those through my wireless G network from a WHS(windows home server) machine to my Xbox 360 without a hitch and to all the PC's in the house. The DVD backups play wonderfully without an issue.
Now I have decided to get some HD movies and encode those and see what I get. Well I did fast and the furious tokyo drift and it came out great. 5.1 Xvid at 3gigs 1280x544(the original was 1920x816) on the 360 the xvid specs are 5k bitrate at 1280x720 with 5.1. well the encoded video looks great pretty much as good as the original however it spikes in the birate to 12k and the 360 cannot handle this. I though maybe my network was an issue so I put the vid on a DVD-r and external hardrive and it still stuttered and skipped and it always does in the exact same places. The sound keep playing but the video completely stops then starts up again after the scene.
So here is my question. How do I lower the bitrate to something that the 360 can handle? here is site that tells all for the 360 decoding ability.
http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx
I also looked into maybe doing it in WMV since they post 15k for max birate, but autoMKV 93 and 93a will not allow 5.1 sound as the advanced audio always resets itself and 5.1 is a must for my movie experience pleasure. Xvid looks great so I checked the true highest bitrate the 360 can handle and it seems that 7k at 8seconds is the max it can handle. So how do I use VBR in xvid and limit the max bitrate?

@bigggt
sorry for late answer
make sure you have installed all software linked in first page
you can also try with the new 0.95 beta
@reddragon72
however it spikes in the birate to 12k and the 360 cannot handle this
on xvid profile change <VbvMaxRate>0</VbvMaxRate> to <VbvMaxRate>5000000</VbvMaxRate>
but autoMKV 93 and 93a will not allow 5.1 sound as the advanced audio always resets itself and 5.1 is a must for my movie experience pleasure
:rolleyes: check the wiki.... (even if with this sentence i can't guarantee the 100% success :p )

Ok I have a few Q's first I got the xml profile I want open and was just about to edit it when I noticed that there are three settings that might help.
<VbvPeakRate>0</VbvPeakRate>
<VbvMaxRate>0</VbvMaxRate>
<VbvBuffer>0</VbvBuffer>
I got the middle one and what that will do for me, but what about that first one can I set that in sec or something and limit the amount of time that the max bitrate is hit?
and what is the last on for? an I put the size of the buffer in there? if so that one might fix everything.
I also have noticed another issue, it seems that all the programs used to look at the xvid movies show AC3 2ch not 6? I will check this at home, but gspot and other(VLC) show only 2 channels and I swear it is 6 channels at home, but my surround system will auto up 2 to 6 if there is only a 2 channel source and it is really good at doing that, so when I get home I will check and make sure that the avi's are in fact 6ch and not 2ch as being reported.

When TS-Files are used for input, the Error "No Video sequence header found" is displayed at the moment I start encoding.
It seems, that the error is produced by DGIndex, not by AutoMKV. Are there settings for DGIndex to surpass this failure?
OR: Are there other known programs to split or encode TS-files?

I like automkv but I have had one complaint for a long time, but it could be I am missing something. I don't like to encode to size; I have a media center at home (popcornhour A-100) and on the road I use my iPod (or I store the files on my laptop). Never-ever needed to encode a movie to a specific size.
So all of the H264 profiles are "size" encoding except the one unconstrained CQ encoding. Now with Megui I can load any profile select Single Pass set the quantizer to 20 resave the profile to Some other name and I am set. For example my PopCornHour uses Level 4.1 so I load in the PS3 profile which is Level 4.1 set it to single pass Quantizer of 20 save it as PopCornHour-CQ20 and I am done.
With RipBot264 I need to load a profile, set it to single pass and I am done.
With StaxRip you select a template, go to the codec setup set it to single pass (check maximum bitrate) save it as a new template.
But I have never understood how to take one of the excellent automkv profiles and change it to single pass and save it as a new profile. I know I could use a text editor but I wouldn't know what parameters to change.
Just a comment.

start automkv, select any profile BUT Constan Quality
on advanced settings check Specify Quality
Now you will have a 1 pass encoding , with crf, with options based on profile you selected (i can suggest High performance)

the profile must have _CQ_ and the <encodingmode> must be 1 or 9 for triggering the constant quality options

I've been using AutoMKV to convert big .mkv video to smaller .mkv video for PDA playing.
I usually burn subtitle (the subtitle is embended as a text stream in source .mkv file), it worked very well. However, it stops working recently. The subtitle is not burned into the final video (I did check 'burn subtitle' in AutoMKV advanced settings tab), although the source file plays fine with subtitle (MPC with CCCP codecs).
@buzzqw,
I use GraphEdit to open the source mkv file, video/audio/subtitle are all splitted correctly into correct filters. DirectVobSub renders video and subtitle together. When I play GraphEdit, the video has subtitle.
I checked the log file that AutoMKV created, it says "Avi engage mode not corrected, switched to DirectShowSource". I assume if GraphEdit plays the source file fine with subtitle, AutoMKV should create final video with subtitle, since it is part of the source video. Am I right?
:thanks:

just open the movie.avs in virtualdub, do you see the subs ?
if not, set haali/vobsub to display, close virtualdub, restart virtualdub and re open the movie.avs. Now subs should be visible
if visible, automkv will encode the movie as you see in virtualdub

Why can AutoMKV not keep 5.1 audio? I have a DVD with 5.1 audio. I told AutoMKV to encode with Nero AAC but to keep the Original audio. Instead, it gave me stereo audio. Why is that?

I have the same thing going on now. I encoded a bunch of DVD's and selected the AC3 codec with the "original" selector selected and all my AVI's have 2ch not 6ch.
Buzz can you look into this, I am using 93a.
check in log if channel is "Original"
make sure that is used nicac3source in mkvmaudio.avs and not directshowsource
5.1 is working

Ok, new try but old problem. It keeps saying "Encoding Audio Files..." without doing anything. DGIndex is open in background with an empty window, nothing loaded in it.
The audio file is correctly extracted and has the name "audio1.ac3" - shouldn't it be "audio.ac3"?
EDIT: OK, it seems to be a problem with the filename or the script! If I load "audio1.ac3" into DGIndex, the process goes on...
I come back later and report, if the job could be finished.

I just checked and it is set to original, but Gspot, vlc, and my surround sound system are reporting it as 2ch. I'm running another test run right now from another DVD.
Also please help with this other very important issue. I'm trying to setup a xbox360 Xvid profile, and am trying to limit the bitrate to 6000. you told me to set <VbvMaxRate> to 6000000 and I'm still getting bitrates in the 9000+ range. Please help me figure this out so I can help others out that are trying to get HD Xvid movies on there 360.

I set it to "3000" and I get that size every time. and I tried setting both of those to 6000000 and no change. When I use the SAP profile the bitrate limit seems to be 7000 or just a tad over, but that is still to much for the 360 to handle for long periods. it's almost like it is not useing the profile, and I changed all the profiles to make sure that the change is there.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit without SP1. I have no codec packs installed. I only have Xvid 1.1.3, Haali Media Splitter, AC3Filter, and CoreAVC installed. I found an older version of the xvidcore.dll, and replaced it with your pacakged on. I have tried AutoMKV 0.93a and 0.97beta7.
I am trying to rip my DVD's and upconvert at the same time so I can stream them to my Xbox 360.
How can I fix this?
If I cannot fix this, I will have no other choice but to encode to WMV.

an i change the resolution
... you can change width in main panel .. or use manual resize in advanced settings
and filters.. do varius things.. search filter's name on forum
@bigggt
what's resolution (width/height) ? .. and yes.. can be normal (can be due to filters, deinterlacer...)
@chrislynch
try this buiild http://members.optusnet.com.au/squid_80/xvid_encraw.zip

@buzzqw: I seem to be seeing slightly undersized files (1-2MB). I set it for 350 (1/2 CD) and get 348 or recently set for 370 and get 368.
This is x264/mkv files, could it be overestimating the muxing overhead?

2 or 3 mb of downsize it's a safe margin
i prefer to keep it a little smaller than bigger and cannot burn
if you prefer set disk settings to 353 for gaining 3 mb...

Hi, I'm trying to use the latest version, however, the ffmpeg libraries can't be copied to my system32 folder in Vista. I've tried running the exe both as a limited user and as an admin.
Which files need to be copied to that folder, and why is it necessary in this latest version of AutoMKV that files need to copied to my system folder?
buzzqw
16th January 2008, 21:51
ffmpegsource library is needed to copy into a system folder only for opening avs files created by automkv in virtualdub
when automkv is running it creates a virtual path that include all \exe\encoder folder
in automkv 0.95 and with new ffmpegsource.dll (1.14) there not need to copy ffmpegsource dlls to system folder

Ok, thanks, but why does the app try to copy unsuccessfully the 8 files into the system32 folder if there is a virtual path in the exe folder? In other words, I'm not sure I follow what you are saying.

Pascal
Don't forget to adjust the size of the final movie to match the size of the clip you take if you're not using a ConstantQuality profile.
Take the number of minutes in the movie divided by the targeted final size of file for the full movie, then multiply by the number of minutes you're using for your sample. On my last project I was not using audio in the sample. So I estimated the bitrate the audio would use and found the size the audio would have taken up in the sample and subtracted that out, too.

@kikker
ok.. i wil try to explain better (and sorry for my english)
while automkv is up and running the \exe\encoder is a system folder , so windows when searching for some dlls will search even in this directory
when automkv is shut down the virtual path is removed and the dlls in \exe\encoder aren't more avaiable to windows
the ffmpegsource.dll need for fuction that other dlls (zlib.dll, avcodec.dll, sw-scale.dll...) are in avaiable to windows; this is not a problem when automkv is running (the virtual path)
BUT when automkv is closed, the script created by automkv (that do loadplugin("ffmpegsource.dll")) aren't "loadable" by virtualdub since the needed dlls aren't avaiable , aren't in path
so if you allow to copy the dlls even when automkv is not running you will be able to open automkv script in virtualdub :)
ok?

Buzzq, thanks for the explanation regarding the virtual system folder in exe/encoder. I've copied ffmpegsource along with the required libraries into my system32 folder. And, I run AutoMKV from a separate partition on the hard drive (data drive) to avoid any write issues to the system drive.
However, virtualdubmod crashes everytime I try to open an MKV (AVC) and encode to a MP4 (x264). I wonder if the virtual path (exe/encoder) must be on the same partition as the system drive.

i said opening avs script made by automkv.. not mkv..
if you want open mkv you must write a script like this
loadplugin("ffmpegsource.dll")
ffmpegsource("mymovie.mkv")
for example

Great! I've traced the problem to the audio encoding. Any one of the following outcomes may happen with the same exact film. During the encoding, either VirtualDubMod crashes, or the audio encoding takes one full hour, or the log states that the audio stream is broken even after using directstream or ffmpegsource.
Doesn't 1 hour seem an abnormally long time for taking a 2-hour film's AC3 stream and converting to AAC (LC cbr 128 kbs)?

Maybe I searched all wrong, but didn't find an answer....
I am trying to rip a couple of my Blue Ray disks to my HD and convert them to H.264 mkvs of about 4-5GB.
I have ripped the first disk with AnyDVD HD, but now I am stuck:
I can select the main movie in AutoMKV (which is all I want,) by choosing "*" All Files and then selecting the largest file in the Stream folder.
But how do I add the appropriate Audio stream and subtitles? Which files do I choose?
Also, any suggestions for what setting to choose for the best quality conversion within the 4-5GB limit?
(I am assuming that if I figure out how to convert Blue Ray, I'll be able to apply the same procedure to my HD-DVDs.)

I just checked and it is set to original, but Gspot, vlc, and my surround sound system are reporting it as 2ch. I'm running another test run right now from another DVD.
I just wondered if all worked out !
I suppose there is no chance that you selected a 2-channel AC3.
Some movies, like Lord of the Rings, have a 5.1 surround and a 2-channel main audio track.

I have a question about aspect ratios. I've been encoding 16:9 movies with or without forcing it (result is normally the same) and everything seemed to be going fine, until I noticed that with some movies, there is a very slight difference between the way the movie is encoded and the way it actually is (both are supposed to be 16:9). When I play it with windows media classic it seems just fine, but then if I force 16:9 through the player, the picture "shrinks" by about 1/3 inch. I compared it with the actual DVD and the difference seems to be legit. It's very hard to tell the difference and it doesn't happen on all movies, but I just thought you should know... Any suggestions/explanation?

I thought of that and I do have the AC3 6ch selected from the DVD and then AC3 and original selected for the rest. I even tried just original since the DVD is already in 6ch AC3, but I get the same results. I haven't had alot of time lately to look at it all, but I am giving full resources to it now, to try and get it straightened out. Even MKV to Dvix is doing the same with a DTS track as the original. I plan on dumping Vista on that machine and making it a full time recoding machine with XP on it.
I'm still having issues with the max bit rate more so and that is more important as I have several movies in HD 1080 that need to me recoded to 720 with less than 6000 bitrate for Xvid. I'm doing this cause the 360 has issues with anything higher than 6000, and that is my main focus right now.

I'd assume I can use AutoMKV to do the same, utilizing its much more user-friendly interface.

What's ITU?
I have noticed a black border around a couple movies I've watched lately, the player apps all seem to consider it part of the picture itself even though the movie is within it.

Hey Buzz, I've got another question. I'm just using this movie as an example. I have Rambo: First Blood on DVD. When I play it, I can select this option in VLC:
http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee80/whynotco/test1.jpg
But when I keep the 5.1 audio and encode with AutoMKV, it doesn't give the option to use 5.1 surround. It only shows the stereo, mono, and 2 front 2 rear. Why is this?

Found a few "bugs"
Encoding my 24 DVDs to 264+m4a (nero_enc for audio).
setup
Vista 64 Ultimate
4GB RAM
E4300
2 X SATA HDD
1) I cant seem to batch encodes, always fails with a dialog box telling me it cant find movie.avs (its virtual dub thats complaining)
I have no problems at all if i click the encode button but thats not good if I want to encode a whole disc and I have to keep starting the process, and I cant obviously do overnight encodes.
2) pop-up box goes funny if I change the time.
When I get the popup box with encoding info (per pass), I noticed my time was wrong. I changed it and the fps counter went to 0 and the time left went funny too (-59 hours etc). I put the clock back but it was still "funny". Didn't affect the encode so I guess its only cosmetic.
3) Everytime I get asked about copying a load of files to someplace in my windows dir, this happens when I start the app. If I say OK it fails, if i say NO to copy, all works fine anyway?. I think its some avisynth stuff. Interesting enough automkv never used to work for me (all encodes started and ended instantly I think as some dependency was not installed). After I installed latest vesion of autogk it fixed automkv too! (YAY!)

I believe I have. As I said I can encode SINGLE jobs without issue, well all except that issue with mp4box not responding on vista64 but then i'm not the only one with that issue ;-)
Just had a look at the big fat warning, everything listed there would stop encodes, I CAN encode but can't batch them.
I'll try and grab a log (its currently encoding). Will post when its ready to try. Thanks for the response btw.

Just got back from shopping, I had queued up two jobs, seems the first job finished but there was the mp4box.exe has stopped responding diaglog box, which stopped the second job starting until i clicked OK. The mp4box stalling only happens sometimes, I have a feeling it depends on the profile used for encoding.

Hello,
For some reason I have been getting this error when using AutoMKV (93a)-
"virtualdub error
the function deletecomments was called on a stream[?] that hasn't been previously initialized with setsource"
Would anyone know what would cause this?
I have been using AutoMKV for a while with no problems, maybe a stuffed something on my pc?
I have tried deleting and reinstalling the programme but that did not help.
Thanks.

suggestion :
Now that we have a free software to mux to m2ts format. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134104)
is it possible to add a feature. keep a x% of free space when trying to get the bitrate for the target size.
You told me that I kept 2% , but I'll like to have a textbox. The default could be 2%.
the reason if simple. Look like the overhead when convert mkv to m2ts is around 5-8%. I would like to try starting with 6% :)
like that I want have to edit manually the bitrate calculated by automkv to fit the target in m2ts. All I want it to burn the movie on a DVD5.

@Nightshiver
I think you may find the problem is with VLC not with AutoMKV. I've done some searching on the Videolan forums and there are a number of posts with people having problems playing 5.1 AAC streams.
http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=42891&hilit=aac+support
http://new-forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=38610&p=119405&hilit=aac+5+1+audio&sid=12d32ab4376365e6e940412acb5102be#p119405
There's apparently some issue with the channel mapping. On my tests here it seems that AAC5.1 encoded with NeroAAC is detected by vlc as 2 channel while AAC5.1 encoded with Coding Tech is detected as 8 channel.
Have you tried with another media player?
buzzqw
27th January 2008, 11:09
@Nightshiver and zacoz
i suppose that zacoz is right, if avinaptic reports 5.1.. the audio is 5.1
you can also try with media player classic or Mplayer
@survivant001
not in next build (0.95) but probabily in 0.96 i will add support ot m2ts as container (using excellent tsMuxeR)

I had a look at your AVInaptic screen-shot and it's quite blurry.
If you only want a window screen shot (not fullscreen)... click on window and Alt-PrintScreen (not Ctrl-PrintScreen).
Saving your image in an image editing app like Photoshop will also improve the visual quality exponentially !

I was looking for a solution to why i can't get neroaacenc.exe to work(with no luck of course) but came accross this guide http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!162.entry and was wondering if that 360/Ps3 profile is good.
with the current version of automkv there are seperate 360 and ps3 profiles but one that would play on both systems would be a bonus
so just wondering about the profile and if anyone has any suggestions on how i can get neroaacenc.exe to work.
i have tries the latest versions of automkv and have all the required software from the first post

That guide is by me, the PS3/Xbox 360 profile is just the PS3_41 profile already present in AutoMKV but with bframe-pyramids disabled for cross compatibility between the two consoles. The guide is aimed at beginners [like me] so it's just handy to have one profile to take care of both platforms & know that it will work on either.

Awesome :)
Please add ts *and* m2ts as containers. m2ts files are bigger due to more overhead, so it's good to keep the choice.
If you can make it so that we can, i.ex select a dvd5 as target size and it calculates the muxing overhead to get the target bitrate it will be perfect. :)

automkv will IGNORE any filters used while computing the bitrate.
You set the final size and AutoMKV will compute the bitrate. No more no less :)

I am new to this stuff - why is it that some of my m2ts files (including the main movie) come up with "no sequence video header" and the DGindex just sits there on the screen.
I think it is a limitation of DGindex - if this is the case which program can i use like this one that does not use DGindex

Your m2ts contains AVC stream instead of mpeg2 therefore DGIndex won't work.

I've searched through the forums but couldn't find any step-by-step directions. Is there some trick to getting the burning of subtitles to work? I seem to be doing something wrong but I can't figure out what it is. I'm currently using the latest beta.
Personally, I would like to not have to burn subtitles into the video but SageTV currently doesn't support MKV subtitles.

external subtitle ? or from ifo ?
if external load it as usually, then in advanced settings check "burn subtitle"

It's from ifo.
I see it extract the subtitles but they don't end up in the final video.

look at muxing.bat, or launch from dos
is sub/idx present ?
analyze the muxed file with avinaptic , is it reporting any subs stream ?
@hfmls

I searched the forums and I'm not sure if this is a big bug or not, or if anyone has reported it. On Vista Ultimate AutoMKV93a hangs when processing the first que. After the video is completed and saved, the program completely freezes. After running it again, it seems to work fine and processes all the others ques as normal... its just the first one thats messed up. Not sure if this has been talked about or not... something about 225 pages of forum is quite daunting, lol

Why can't I get WMV 5.1 audio with 2_Pass_Better_Quality or 2_Pass_Balanced and just with 1_Pass_High Performance profile ?
TIA :)

Hi, got a problem with Crop section in advanced settings. 'Check Values', 'Preview' and 'Chapter' are greyed out, even when clicking 'Enable Manual Crop and Resize'. Am I doing something wrong or is this function disbaled ? How or when can I use it again ?

Yes I've had this happen to me too, gone back go single encodes but will try the new mp4box in the URL above tonight to see if I can batch encode with it.
