Hi, I can't seem to find the switch for the (no) fast pskip in the standard GUI, while it was demonstrated in DeathTheSheep's most excellent x264 guide.

What I would like to ask is do I now need the CLI to enable the --no-fast-pskip option?

I believ u need a patch for enabling (no) fast skip.
This is from his site:
Note: this option is not available in all builds (SVN), but is occasionally included as a patch in customized builds.

Well the vfw-thingie you can access via virtualdub :-)

x264-vfw is not maintained, and I'm not sure I'll accept patches for it even if someone else writes them.

The "normal gui" is MeGUI (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=112496).

Speaking of VFW, some bad news on the x264.nl poll so far: A lot of people seem to use VFW :scared:

time for them to upgrade...

if evil people (us, microsoft, etc) don't put deadlines, they would all still be on windows 95 and VFW... :)

Yeah, I don't see how that is bad news. Bad news for them I guess. I stopped VfW builds months ago and not because no one wanted them.

Well I still use VFW, but less often then before. However, why you guys won't make directshow x264 build?

For direct recording in x264 codec from TV card, VFW is still only solution? And, I use x264 in that purpose, with capture resolution 384x288 and bitrate 400.

DS requires yet another new interface and hooks to be developed, and as yet no one with the experience has stepped up to make it happen.

Command-line is not such an advanced interface, is it? Yet, I don't feel ashamed I'm using it to do encoding.

I would put forward the case that allows closest connection between user and code (ie CLI) is the best interface for advanced users. If you want a GUI, use MeGUI. If you want a GUI and don't want to set x264 options, use MeGUI with Sharktooth's profiles.

Thanks for the replies guys.

If you allow me, let me sneak in another question...

In the changelog of x264 I have found this:

Before, we eliminated dct blocks containing only a small single coefficient. Now that behavior is optional, by --no-dct-decimate.
based on a patch by Alex Wright.

I saw that this option was also in MeGui. Now my question is, for the best of the best quality, should I enable it or not?

yes you should.

I didn't notice an impact on quality side using --no-dct-decimate. Maybe I didn't try to encode enough videos.
