I want to make a movie using Matroska which has 2 video streams, and would like the user to be able to switch between the 2 streams at will. Obviously the 2 streams will play at the same time, but only 1 should be visible. I've managed to get 2 video streams and 1 audio stream into a .mkv file, but when i play it in VLC it opens 2 video windows and plays both of them. Is there a way i can have VLC only display one playing stream at a time? I've tried several media players to no avail. The only other player that recognised the 2 individual streams was The Core Player.. but wouldnt let me switch between the videos. VLC sees both streams and plays both which is possibly the closest.

Any help would greatly appreciated, tearing my hair out over this :S

You can do this with Haali's splitter. Although the problem is that the behaviour of switching between the streams might be impredictable (for example ffdshow forces the same DAR to both pictures, and can't switch with other filters).

please forgive my ignorance, but is there any guide that shows me how to achieve this?

No.

Why would you need a guide to install Haali's splitter and open up a directshow player??? You aren't on linux right?

please forgive my ignorance, but is there any guide that shows me how to achieve this?when playing a file with haali's splitter in a dshow player on windows you will see an icon in the taskbar. when you rightclick on it you can switch the streams in the file, eg two video streams
