Ripping Alien Director's Cut

Hi all...

I'm trying to rip the Directors Cut of Alien, from the first disc of the Quadrilogy boxset. I've used DVDDecrypter in IFO mode which found two titles (as far as I'm aware, the dvd uses mutli angles to insert added/extended scenes). However, the Directors Cut is the shorter of the two, so I've just selected that, and ripped to my HDD.

I then re-encoded the movie to x264. I realise this part isn't anything to do with decrypting, but I'm just giving info. When I finally muxed the audio and x264 encode together, it seemed fine. However as I watched the movie I noticed the audio going progressively out of sync... by the end of the movie it was completely out.

I actually did the whole encode again, to see if that was the problem... same thing. So I'm guessing the problem is happening during ripping to my HDD, and most likely because its a multi angle movie?

If anyone has encountered this problem, or similar, any thoughts would be greatly welcomed. If you need any more info, let me know.

Erm..... ok.

I was pretty sure it was a decrypting question, but if it's an encoding one, then why DivX?

Hi,

If it is a decrypting problem there is a trick (thread in the decrypting forum somewhere) that MAY solve your problem: use DVD shrink in film only mode (and DvdD in file mode before) try encoding the resulting...

Ok, excuse my bluntness here. I do appreciate your help, but I've been chucked from pillar to post here.

I used DVDDecrypter to rip (as mentioned in the first post). I did actually originally post this in the decrypting section, but for some reason it was deemed that it wasn't a decrypting question, then moved to the DivX section... obviously.

Ok... I'm gonna have to spread this next bit out over a few posts to incorporate it all, so bare with me...

I'm trying to rip the Directors Cut of Alien from a DVD that has both the Directors Cut and the Theatrical cut by use of multiangle/ILVU.

If I open the DVD in DVDDecrypter in IFO mode it gives me two main PGC's...

PGC 1 [01:51:50] <--- theatrical cut
PGC 2 [01:51:05] <--- directors cut


... I want the latter of the two, so I choose it, decrypt, frameserve (and demux existing ac3), encode, remux new video and previous audio. Now my final result is out of sync. The audio goes progressively out of sync, as mentioned in the first post. I've tried the whole process again, re-decrypting, reencoding, re-remuxing, etc etc, the same output each time.

Now, if I go back and decrypt again, and then immediately demux the vobs (in something like dvdlab pro), the files I am given are an m2v (01:51:50 in length) and an ac3 (01:51:05 in length). Anyone starting to notice anything here?

Right, now if I go back again and decrypt the whole DVD in FILE mode, then open up VTS_01_0.IFO in IfoEdit, this is what it tells me...

I have read a few threads in which ArcOSS causes these types of problems. There is a method to correct it however you need to use search and find it (sorry I'm working right now).

No problem. When I first started running into problems, I thought it might be arccos, but when I ran it through PGCEdit (with the psl2 plugin), it didn't seem to pick up on anything. It's a 20th Century Fox DVD btw.

Whoaaa... excuse me. I didn't object. Sirber asked what I used to rip it, I replied (encompassing both your posts), by saying I used DVDDecrypter. I started off the post by apologising for being blunt, but explaining I had been chucked from pillar to post (ie, from one forum to another).

Yes I have tried it in FILE Mode, and by reauthoring the PGC2 in DVDShrink. Didn't make a difference. I've tried Ripping with SmartRipper, ripping with DVDDecrypter, demuxing straight from both, or plain 'direct copy' decrypting. I've tried looking for arccos protection in PGCEdit, I've tried stripping the streams and removing seamless branching in IfoEdit, I've tried running through VobBlanker. None so far have worked.

Do you still have the original ripped files before encoding on your hard drive? If so, does the audio drift viewing the unconverted version?

If not, I would suspect your ripping is fine, and the reencoding parameters are the problem when it comes to the reeconding stage. If indeed the audio DOES drift on the unencoded ripped files, it must be the ripping that's at fault...

If I decrypt straight to vob files, and play them back, audio and video are fine, but...

... if I go back and decrypt again, and then immediately demux the vobs (in something like dvdlab pro), the files I am given are an m2v (01:51:50 in length) and an ac3 (01:51:05 in length)

Same thing happens if I decrypt/demux at the same time.

Using what to demux? and have you tried muxing those together?

If I encode straight from a d2v (only demuxing the ac3), my file lengths are exactly what you just posted, celtic_druid, and it is when muxing those back together that I find they progressively go out of sync.

Maybe you can try, and see if the same happens for you?


edit: I think I've found a workaround (wouldn't really call it a 'fix'). I timestretched the ac3 to match the encoded video length (1:51:05:240 - same as d2v input, but different from demuxed m2v). When muxed back together this basically meant the video and audio were ever-so-slightly out of sync all the way through, but a whole lot better than it was before, where it was completely out by the end of the film.

Just as a bit of info, I also encoded the 'theatrical cut' and there were absolutely no audio/video sync probs. I still firmly believe it has nothing to do with the encoding, as the 'directors cut' (being the shorter of the two) basically uses the theatrical and adds/trims/extends scenes by ILVU.

Pretty sure that it was in sync here right the way through. The slightly shorter audio doesn't matter since the end is just black frames.

So, are your decrypted/demuxed streams the lengths you gave, or is that from the demuxed audio, and frameserved video?

I know I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary here, because it's stuff I've done countless times before.

If your final video is 1:51:05.240 and your final audio is 1:51:04.768, then mux those back together, and go to the scene at the end where Ripley's talking about the crew, then see if it's in sync.

Yeah, I just checked. It is off.

Interestingly, the title plays fine in mplayer (played time keeps resetting though), but -ao pcm doesn't match the video either at the end.
