Old Dvd Player

I have a older DVD player that states it can play mpg4. I would like too know, how you can make downloaded movies then play them on my old DVD player. It does not understand all of this new formats. I tried a mpg4, I burned on a DVD+RW and it did not work. I know on rented movies you have a setup screen to start, the movie. Most download movies do not have that on them.
