I was able to grab the TMPGEnc beta 12a which is the last version that recognizes MPEG2. I want to convert it to MPEG1 so I can edit it in Virtualdub.

I've tried encoding it first to Divx but then while cutting/joining the video, the audio and video sometimes get out of sync or doesn't cut exactly where I want them to be. I thought MPEG1, with really frequent keyframes would solve this problem, and it did.

So I loaded up TMPEnc, and are looking at a whole lot of settings. So I've got a few questions on how to get the optimal setting to convert my file into MPEG1 so I can edit it using virtualdub (cutting) and then encode it into Divx also with virtualdub.

1. "Aspect Ratio": How does this alter the video? Do I set it to 1:1 VGA or something else?
2. "Video Source Type": Interlaced or Non-Interlaced? What does this mean?
3. "Field Order": Even Field First (A), Odd Field First (B)??
4. Audio > "Stream Type": What's the difference between MPEG-1 Audio Layer I and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II? Which is better?
5. System > "Stream Type": MPEG-1 System (auto) or MPEG-1 System (VBR)?

Appreciate any help.

If you just want to convert a Mpeg2 Video into divx, you should look into using dvd2avi and avisynth. Doom's website has good guide on how to do this.

Converting to Mpeg1 with tsunami will just take forever, and is not worth the effort.

I want to edit (cut) the MPEG before I convert it to DivX. I need it in an edit-able form.

You'll get bad quality when recompressing twice. Look out for an MPEG2 editor like M2-edit.

If you have lots of disk space, you can also save your MPEG2 using HUFFYUV without further loosing quality. The HUFFYUV video can be edited easily using VirtualDub. After editing you can convert to DivX.

Thx for the advice bb. I'll try to free up about 2.5GB :) of my HD for my 2 hour rip. Editable, but huge: bitrate = 3MB/sec.

Another question, do you know of a lossless audio codec?
