This is what im doing -

I have a large collection of Dr Who videos that i want to encode and put on dvd. I have done quite few of them, but i have just heard about DivX Ultra which would allow me to put a series worth of Dr Who storys on 1 SL/DL disc and have a menu screen to allow me to choose which story i want to watch + have chapter points within those stories ( am i corrrect ? )

The thing is, what version of DivX do i need to buy as far as i can tell from the divx website there isn't a version to buy called DivX Ultra ?

+ will the DivX films that i encode with Divx Ultra ( when i buy it ) have a DivX id imprinted on it ??

and finally will I be able to re-encode the xvids I have already done into DivX Ultra without losing any quality from the original encode ??

I hope i have put this in the correct place :o

Afaik, you just need to buy DivX Pro. This includes the DivX Converter, which enables you to create DivX-Ultra content.
Please be aware that such content needs a DivX-Ultra certified player...

Reencoding from XviD will certainly worsen the quality.
If you're determined to re-encode, choose the highest possible bitrate you can afford. Like if your original encode is 700MB, aim for 1400MB when you reencode to minimize quality loss.

Surely it is a matter of muxing, not encoding. The DivX Ultra bit is about the divx media format, not the DivX codec and if you encode via XviD using a home theatre profile, then you should be able to mux with menus, etc. without the need to buy anything?

It's version 6 of the DivX Codec & Player that has the ability to add menu's etc.

Have a look at DivXMedia Builder (http://userxp.tripod.com/mb.htm) and have a look at this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=109622) thread for some help with using it.

Thanks for the info,

I have a DivX Ultra Philips DVD player.

Thanks for the links jacquers, divxmedia builder would be just what i want but having looked at the links it is probably a little too complicated for me, unless there is simpler user guide available somewhere, i will keep an eye on its development and wait until the simple mode is enabled :D

if you are interested in doing that, i could make a template for you, all you need is to do is to send me the specs of the divx files you already have.

i could make a template with "fake 10 second clips movies", i could email it to you and then all you needed to do was to replace the dummy movies with the original ones and "mux/compile"

send me a PM here if youre interested
