View Full Version : Animated Avatar Anyone
...
I have created an animated avatar.
My avatar is a frog that smiles for a second or two.
But Doom9 Forum will not allow me to have an animated avatar.
My avatar's size is within forum minimums.
Others have animated avatars. Why not me?
So what do I need to do in order to get mine on the forum???

You're allowed an animated avatar, as mine will attest. It just needs to conform with the forum's limits of image dimensions and file size.

My avatar image was under 19.5 KB, but not also within 70x70 pixils spec.
I had mistakenly thought only spec was required, since it was an OR statement.
I didn't carefully read the 'small' print in the ()'s.
IMHO they use poor English in the instructions.
It should have been an AND statement, not an OR statement.
I suggest that they should have written:
"The maximun size of your custom image may not exceed 70 by 70 pixels and 19.5 KB."
KISS
I've reduced size to 60x70 pixels and it installed.
Let's see what it looks like.
...
Crap - the bloody frog isn't flashing a smile now and then, and it is so small.
Back to the drawing boards.
I'm using the GIMP on a Windows box as the image modifier.

I edited my avatar down to 69x69 and 13.9kb gif file,
and I get "You may not upload animated images."
Maybe there is some other spec I am not obeying.
I don't know what to do now.
Maybe I'm not amoung the priviledged class.
Help appreciated.

"You may not upload animated images."
Then host it on a free server such as www.imageshack.us. If you sign up as a free member it will host your file indefinitely.

without checking what it actually says, just by reinserting the OR in your sentence: "The maximum size of your custom image may not exceed 70 by 70 pixels or 19.5 KB" Sounds correct to me because it tells you what your avatar may not. And one of the two conditions is enough to make it fail
!ok = (>70pixels) OR (>19.5KB)
-> ok = (<=70pixels) AND (<=19.5KB)

In english, "or" is typically exclusive (moreso when used with "either"), whereas it's always inclusive in engineering; it's easy to get mixed up if you aren't used to both. Plus clauses can be misleading. (Especially when you want it to be true! =p)

CWR03,
I uploaded my frog to
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/288/smilingfrog128by.gif
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/288/smilingfrog128by.gif
Then I tried to make it my avatar, and again
"You may not upload animated images." popped up.
As you can see my animated image comes up in this post, so why not as an avatar.
Whats this old frog need to do to be able to smile under his user name??
Seems I'm not amoung the priviledged few.
Maybe not enough Posts.
Who knows???

Did you paste the avatar's link in the URL slot, or did you try to upload it?

I just tried it and there seems to be no way to use animated avatars anymore. (no matter if it is uploaded somewhere else)

Swede mentioned somewhere that they were not allowed, but it wasn't an announcement, just a statement. I imagine the change happened with the upgrade to V3 and since the check happens when an avatar is initially uploaded then any pre-existing animated avatars are grandfathered in.

@wmansir, moderator (a forum god)
Thanks for the reply.
Could you contact the Swede about this issue and suggest that
if there is to be no new animated avatars, that the Avatar instructions and FAQ say so, please.
Better yet why not set the V3 settings so that animated avatars are allowed.

Big dealMy man :) I don't like avatars anyway so consider yourself lucky you can even add one.. I've never understood the need for one.

Well, if someone's avatar lasts enough, you eventually get used to the nick-avatar association, which makes tracking down a user/post quite faster as you don't have to read a thing and images can be identified at further distances. I would usually rely on this association because my eyes were dyng on me like 9 months ago, but now that I had some laser, I don't see a practical use for them.

@Waleska
"Big Deal", little deal, who cares? Why care?
You are spot-on about the visual aid that an avatar can play.
@Doom9
Sorry that you don't understand.
Maybe you live too far over the rainbow.
The fact is some people's needs, wants, desires differ from others.
That makes life more interesting IMHO.
But when I see some on this forum having animated avatars,
and I try to have one myself, regardless of why,
and I am obeying the rules, followed the yellow brick road,
and when I am rejected, I get curious.
Is the Wicked Witch hidding something?
I get a little offensive when I can't find a good solution.
I want to know the true answer.
The angels tried to help.
The gods were lacking.
Bottom line: Are animated avatars still possible to install?
If so, how? Following the directions doesn't get it done.
If not, why? Can't or don't you want to change the settings?

You already have an image there, enough for an "aid". Trying to get an animated one while knowing that such feature seems to have been disabled, is just a useless egocentric whim aka "I'm so cool, look at my moving avatar!".
Bigger avatars don't do any good to people with slow connections.

A new day. The lawn is moved. Some chores done. And back
to Doom9 and my quest for animated avatars.
"Seems to be disabled" from you is not good enought.
Instructions nor FAQ say "is disabled".
So why shouldn't I keep trying?
"slow connections" are not my problem. That is Doom9's, if
Doom9 so wishes. Not need to plague me with it.
Bottom Line: When I see "is disabled" in the FAQ, Instructions,
and/or from Doom9; THEN my quest will end, not before.

Is that not definitive?

I don't want to and you seem to be forgetting about rule1 on any board: the admin gets to have the last word.
As to being able to have animated avatars like others in
YOUR Doom9 Forum, your last word seems to be NO word
to this thread's issue.
And as far as you alledging my forgetting about rule 1, I had not
forgotten. Quite the contrary, I was attempting to get you
to put out the last word on this issue and put an end to it.
Why can't you just say "I am allowing no new animated avatars"
if that is your ruling? Instead we get "I don't like avatars anyway
so consider yourself lucky you can even add one.. I've never
understood the need for one." You seem to be avoiding the
issue and thus avoiding being a leader.
So if you want to end this issue in a positive manner,
I respectfully request you say yes or no as to whether
we may add animated avatars. And if it isn't too much,
also put it in the FAQ and Avatar Instructions for all to see.

That only concerned changing some settings
and should not be confused with the main issue.
It was not about this thread's issue of how to
(and now whether we can) install animated
avatars such as yours.
I am trying to get Doom9 to post a definitive
statement as to whether we may still install
animated avatars or not. It is like pulling teeth
to get him/her to say yes or no, much less,
if negative, to get it into the FAQ and Avatar
Instructions.

I would hope it is not hopeless to get a definitive answer
on the issue of installing animated avatars. Saying "it is so
useless" I take you to mean that this forum's admin is "useless",
when it comes to answering such questions. For now, being
fairly new here, I still trust admin. But you asking us to sweep
it under the rug, give me a creepy feeling.
Some posters on this forum have animated avatars. So it is
quite easy to assume the rest of us could also, if we wished.
Lacking instructions to the contrary, why can't I install an
animated avatar? Why? Why? Why? Is it too much to ask?
Is this not the forum to ask?
IMHO one should expect this forum's admin to answer
this question in a simple direct manner, since the answer
is neither in the FAQ or the Avatar Instructions.

As you may have noticed, this forum is about dvd backup and video editing. It's certainly not about animated avatars. As you also have noticed, since the last forum update it is not possible to put up one anymore and the admins don't care about it. So, if you want to have one you have to look for another forum to post to.
I hope you are informed well enough, so i will close this thread.
