Recently, I've been converting my DVD collection to DiVX 4.11 format using the GKnot method. The problem is that the divx play fine on my machine(see sig) and a friend's P3 450 w/ GeForce2MX400, but won't work on some of the other computers I've tried.
Two of my friends' laptops and 800 MHz celeron (made by winbook) w/ WinME and 600 MHz P3 (made by gateway) w/ WinXP have a lot of trouble with my divx files. Usually the video will work fine or skip once in a while but the audio has really big problems. The audio will just be totally out of sync or the audio will stay in a loop of about 10 sec.
Any ideas on what the problem is? I find it odd that there are no probs on a P3-450 but the Celeron 800 and P3-600 laptops can't handle the movies.

You didn't mention which Divx player you have tried? I'd use ZoomPlayer or BSPlayer and see if you still get the same results. I have a laptop running a PIII 700 and the movies play nicely on it with either Zoom or BS.

Possible reasons :
- soundcards of your friends PCs dont support 48 KHz sampling rate, but audio of your movies is using this rate ... CPU has to do real time upsampling from 44.1 to 48 on playback ... problems to be exspected.
- Old/outdated video cards and/or drivers ... 8 MB is minimum, get latest drivers
- missing or old DirectX .. upgrade to Direct X 8
- desktop resolution too high .... reduce to 800 x 600, 32 Bits
- wrong Mediaplayer, using to much CPU power .... use Win Mediaplayer 6.4. If Mediaplayer 7 is installed, dont use that. Search for 'mplayer2.exe' on your c-drive because even after 'upgrading' to 7 the old 6.4 is fortunately still there, but hidden. Run it, right click on screen, 'options', 'formats' and assign it to all Video formats.
- DivX4 Direct Show Filter in high postprocessing level . In Mediaplayer 6.4 right click on screen, 'properties', 'advanced' , 'DivX decoder filter', reduce until its working smooth. In PowerDivX Gen 3.11 player this can
be easily accessed directly vai configuraion page ...
Good luck !!

Well, thanks for the help. I told my friends to try BSPlayer and it worked perfectly on their computers. WMP 7 & 8 and The Playa (from divx.com) just weren't working for them. They even said trying the files locked up some computers they tried. Also, I told them to try PowerDivX and Zoom to see if those work any better.
Now what exactly is the reason WMP 7 & 8 and The Playa don't work on their systems but BSPlayer works perfectly?

IMHO because WMP 7,8 and the playa are all junk Media Players.. the best Windows media player is good ole 6.4 which still can be found on every new Windows system even WinXP.

It's M$ junkware :-) Need I say more? Truthfully I never used any of the WiMP players, always used one of the many 3rd party players. Glad you got it going though.
