What settings in AVI-MUX GUI are good for joining DivXed AVI's for a good result?
Could someone give me some pointers?
can AVI-MUX GUI join AVI's better than VirtualDUB?

As long as your files are compatible with each other (same video/audio/subs formats), you can follow this (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/en_join_files.html) guide and join the avis.
As for settings, neither is "better", but AVI-Mux GUI offers a lot more settings than VirtualDubMoD (more info (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/en_output_options_window.html)) which gives you a lot more flexibility during muxing/splitting/joining files, but if you are not careful, it may break standalone compatibility. Not a lot of standalones (and not even a modded XBOX) support files created with all the bells and whistles of AVI-Mux GUI.
A typical thread about AVI-Mux GUI and standalone player woes is this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=65121).
