Can anyone help me why dvd shrink is taking me 3-4 hrs to back up? I never had this problem before until recently and now occurs on every movie. While I preview the back up playing I notice its running almost frame by frame instead running steady.
I'm a newbie......any help would be greatly appreciated

If you've not installed any new hardware or software on your system, and everything is as it was when Shrink was running faster, I'd try defragmenting your drive after deleting any temporary files and emptying the recycle bin.
In fact, I'd try it anyway if it's not been done for some time.

Nearly forgot!
Use Device Manager to check the status of the IDE controller running the DVD drive. It should be set to DMA but Windows can sometimes slow it down after a series of bad reads.
PS I'm assuming you're running Windows...

I defraged recently however I have had a bigger hard drive installed and upgrade memory from 512 to 1gig

Then, as mentioned, it's likely that DMA has been turned off for your drive(s). Turn DMA back on as follows:
In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

Be patient with me everyone....like I said i'm a newbie.
The way I understand this is,
In Windows XP
Open - +IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller in Device Manager
Select - Intel (R) Ultra ATA Storage Contoller 244b, right click and select uninstall...correct?
Then reboot.
Will DMA be available after reboot? If not then what?

To start with, an ATA Storage Controller 244b is not the controller you need to check. When you open Device Manager, expand (click the + sign) next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, then right-click Primary IDE channel and select Properties, click the Advanced Settings tab and see if they're in DMA or PIO mode. Repeat for Secondary. If they are in DMA mode, please report back here and we can try something else. If they're in PIO mode, only then do you need to uninstall them and reboot. As far as I know, you don't have an Advanced Settings tab on an Ultra ATA, RAID or SCSI controller and you won't be able (or need) to affect the DMA mode.

This is what was there originally
In Primary IDE Channel properties
DEVICE 0 - Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 5
DEVICE 1 - Transfer Mode - DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 6

The primary looks ok but suggests that it's running two hard drives. So it looks as though your DVD drive is on the secondary IDE controler. Check the DMA settings on the secondary.

In Secondary IDE Properties
Device 0 - transfer mode - DMA If Available
Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA Mode 2
Device 1 - transfer mode - DMA If Available
Current Transfer Mode - Multi-Word DMA Mode 2

Oh sod it!
That's how it should be. It must be something else.
Or could it just be that you're shrinking much longer movies than you were? Perhaps you're also using deep analysis now when previously you weren't. Both things will take longer. I'm assuming that Shrink's output works alright on a dvd player.
If it's not that, and no other programs have slowed down, I don't know what else to suggest.

Thanks anyway...I have no idea whats going on here and why.
As earlier stated I have 2 hard drives, 1 LG dvd burner and 1 samsung CDRW burner
Analyzing works in a couple of minutes but encoding seems to take forever. I just finished the movie Syrian and it took close to 5 hrs to encode. I watch the lights on the front of my burner and it flashes 6 times consecutively every couple of seconds throughout the whole movie. I've removed and reinstalled shrink 3.2 but no change.
Anyone have any ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure I understand, now. :(
I understand that Shrink's analysis is ok but its encoding takes too long. But the encode (whether to a folder or iso image) writes to a hard drive, not a dvd, so why should the dvd drive lights flash?
If you are selecting "write iso image then burn with DVD Decrypter" I suggest you select "write to iso image" only and see whether it makes any difference. Then, at least, the DVD drive should not flash and the problem can be isolated to either Shrink or Decrypter.

Shrink was selected for ISO image only. The flashing on the front of my burner I was referring to was when it was encoding from original movie to my hard drive using shrink.
I'm currently trying to copy Sponge Bob for the little one and it will take 3-4hrs to encode to iso image to my hard drive.

Aah...
I never rip directly from DVD using Shrink because its too slow and Shrink cannot cope with many copy protection systems.
I always use a dedicated ripper (DVD Decrypter or DVD FabDecrypter) in file mode first, then use Shrink to process the files on the hard drive.
Decrypter rips quicker than Shrink and then Shrink has the benefit of working on a DMA-5 or DMA-6 drive instead of a DMA-2 DVD drive.
It really is much quicker and Decrypter is a far better ripper than Shrink. I'm also looking at RipIt4Me because it automates ripping of heavily protected discs.

I'm crying in my beer now?
I ripped the movie using decrypter first and shrink second. It took me 4 1/2 hrs to finish. Encoding still working at a snails pace.
One thing I noticed though is I cannot use my computer while shrink is working. If I call up any other program it could take a few minutes before it actually activates. Its like my computer is frozen when shrink is running.

If you're using Windows XP, use Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up Task Manager to see if anything besides Shrink is using resources (You can click the label "CPU" to sort them in order of use). It's possible you have something running in the background and slowing the process, like an active virus scan that's continually scanning the files created by Shrink. McAfee is a resource hog.

When I turn shrink on there is nothing else running in task manager. I do not see a CPU label there, however, if I choose the "Processes" tab I can see that there are only a few things running. The only 2 items using the highest percentage is AVG and System Idle Process

Yes,it the Processes TAB that shows cpu usage for each program.
SO.
Fire up Shrink, start your usual routine for compressing a movie, now check the which apps are using the CPU (like CWR03 said ,click the label to sort CPU usage).
DVD Shrink should max out your CPU,but still leave you with a useable system based on its low priority.

I've been surfing the web and came across another forum for shrink users and to my amazement it appears there are thousands of others with the same problem. Everything I was ask to try in this forum was also attempted plus more and the problem is still there.
I'm not sure whats going on with shrink but this problem seems to be growing.
So I'm going to end this thread and I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions and ideas. This is a great forum.
Keep up the good work!
