Why a new member has to wait 5 days to post his/hers fist message here in the forum?? Is there any technical reason for that??

Yeah. Because most new members are people like you who don't search before asking questions. :p

edit: From memory, doesn't it say in the registration email why you have to wait 5 days.

When we first instituted the delay, it was 3 days. We found that wasn't long enough. :)

I doubt this will make people search. You guys are living in an illusion if you think so. ;)

I doubt this will make people search.
:(
Suggestions:
-More details, explanations in the join/registration mail?
-More warnings, visual reminders (bold bigger like Sirber said :) )?
-A tutor: a mod or experimented forumer wanting to answers PM during a limitied period of time (2/3 days) to avoid posting inappropriate/inacurate questions?
-Others?
You guys are living in an illusion if you think so. ;)
The problem is not the illusion, the problem(s) are
-Waste of time/energy from both sides
-The mood/interest going down when having to answers same and same questions again
-The syndrom me want to help but me is doing no help
-Others?
Bad mood today, to be taken as it is: ponctual :o

Yeah, and that's a great way to welcome a new member. You can't just assume that he's not aware of the search function just because he's new here. Sheeesh...

It's hardly a slap in the face :P. Waiting a few days before doing something is not really a problem imo - those with a burning question will either find the solution themselves or will care enough to wait. Those who can't wait probably won't become productive memebers of the community. Look at me, I waited six months after registering before I started posting! :D

awww, tsk tsk..let's see..someone comes in and asks why we have the waiting time without searching to see if the same question was asked before or not, and we are to suddenly realize the injustice behind the wait time? Oh the irony of it. If there is anything which proves the need for the wait time to help avoid useless posts & threads, THIS is it. Maybe we should raise the wait time because 5 days don't seem to be enough here. ;)

Last I checked if you read the signup sheet it clearly states while you are waiting you are welcome to read and search the prior posts.
Not our fault if you don't read it.
I know it clearly states in many places to follow the forum rules and look at rule 1
1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides, FAQs and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info.
1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.
We want to help, but we are not babysitters either.
I was a mod here when we voted in the waiting period and I stick by my yes vote.

I don't think the expectation to "search" is very reasonable either - majority of the data found this way is obsolete (especially with projects that move fast). Alternatively, you can't find anything at all because all the relevant threads are 50-100 posts big (look at ffdshow thread).
Reading stickies, now that's reasonable to expect.
However, the five-day cooloff is very useful to filter out the usual "i downloaded TheMovie_dvdrip_xvid.avi and sound does not play xvid sucks fix it" posts.

I have to respectfully disagree here. Finding data via search which turns out to be obsolete and useless is only true if the user is trying to follow the development of a project, is it not? Looking at the mindset of our typical newbie, that is hardly applicable. He usually have something which won't play, codec issues, quality issues etc. All these are answerable by search. Also search orders the results by descending order of timestamp of threads/posts, so to actually get obsolete information, you have to go to the results on the last few pages by overlooking the results on the first few pages (if lets say, the user got many pages of search results).
Alternatively, you can't find anything at all because all the relevant threads are 50-100 posts big (look at ffdshow thread).
vBulletin allows you to search inside threads.

Personally I use the search all the time and find it rather useful.
I am currently looking for a solution to a problem I am having and reading through all the threads I found on the subject.
While it might take me 10 minutes to find the answer in a search getting a response to a question can sometimes take days if you ask at a bad time (weekend, holiday, etc...)
I post as a last resort.

The only annoyance I sometimes have with the "Use Search!" advocates/flamers is that these are generally the exact same people that will later flame the poor guy for bumping an old thread. (Excuse me. How do you think he found that old thread in the first place?!)
(I'm speaking generically here about most forums, not specically about doom9.org members or anything. :p)
