...or even where to look for them specifically? I'd like to get one of those dual screen jobs and rip my movie collection to XviD so I don't have to bring the originals along with me (and to be able to cram a lot more per DVD-R)...

This is a good idea. I would suggest getting a car PC... VIA has a bunch of really small PC's (I.E. the size of a standard head unit) that will interface with touch screens, and have an optical drive. They also have standard Composite / SVideo out for your allready installed monitors. Check them out. They are very low power, but can be jacked directly into the car's 12V, and usually include some nice power supply circuitry to smooth out the rough car voltages, and prevent damage when you crank the engine.

I have always wanted to build one but for me the cost is a bit high. It can be done for under $500 IIRC.

That's much more than what I'm looking for. Basically, I just want a version of this one (which already is capable of playing back DVD-Rs) that can handle XviD like the latest el cheapo home DVD players can:

Frankly, if I was building one of my own, I'd probably just stuff a 200GB harddrive in a hot-swap case and just burn my entire movie collection onto it. But the whole thing would be ugly, cumbersome, fragile, expensive (the dual LCD screens), and prone to getting effed up during normal minivan use... :|
