View Full Version : How did you choose/get your nickname ?

DarkZell666
30th June 2006, 17:12
This is something I've been wondering about for some time now : how to people choose (or get from others) their nicknames ?

Mine is quite old (from when I was still pre-teen, I'm 19 now :/) :
Dark - just a silly wanabe prefix
Zell - my fav ff8 character at the time
666 - another silly wanabe thing (I'm no satanist ;))

My other (more commonly used nickname) is XaS.
One night, when founding our first counter-strike team (-={?a?}=-) we decided to invent nicknames with 3 letters (preferably with an A in the middle, but there were only few possibilities so we dropped that last condition xD).
I chose XaS 'coz I wanted one with an X in it.
And there it was ^^ I've been using it for 5 years now.

How about you ? ;)

Your nick was pointless before the explanation, now it's pointless and pathetic, no offense :D

dani82

well, when i joined, dani through dani81 was already taken, so i had to settle when dani82

I dropped a cat on the keyboard.

buzzqw
1st July 2006, 11:33
i hope the cat wasn't harmed by this shamefull procedure ? :D

btw, at work i had to reistall the WinXp on pc of our client, that was "hackered" by numerous pidgeons... regedit/IE/SyStem32 folders all get scrambled...

my nick came from an old pc game (i cannot even remember the name... i can suppose "Vendetta"), "The Buzzqw" was one of first enemy to splat...

Nice findings here ^^ I find those methods pretty original ;)

But :

Your nick was pointless before the explanation, now it's pointless and pathetic, no offense :D
Did I say otherwise ? In fact it was the point of the hole thing, rofl. What about yours then Waleska ? your post was just as pointless as my nickname, no offense huh ? ;)

Waleska
1st July 2006, 13:59
My name is Waleska, no other nick would have honored me better :D

hitbit
1st July 2006, 16:59
Heatbeat was a brilliant musician active many years ago in the Amiga demo scene (heck, am I really this old?). I used his nick for some time as a kind of hommage to him, then I opted for the shorter, and with similar sound, "hitbit".

Teegedeck

I dropped a cat on the keyboard. Now this is what I call style. In order to top that for my next nick I think I'm gonna have a nekkid lady lash the keyboard with her whip while the members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra will be inciting her with a hummed version of the Enterprise themesong (classic series) from behind the sofa. Standing in buckets of custard, of course.

Oh, I chose my current nick by picking the first word I saw when I let my gaze wander through the room.

Mug Funky
2nd July 2006, 04:17
walking through a supermarket with my housemate, we came across mugs that had knockoff Shag paintings on them, most likely without permission.

the product name on the price thingy was "MUG, FUNKY - $3.00"

thought it sounded cool...

Moitah
2nd July 2006, 04:38
I randomly made it up as a character name for a game I used to play. It was originally "Moytah" but later I changed the spelling.

fccHandler
2nd July 2006, 09:28
"MUG, FUNKY - $3.00"
Lol, that's great! :D

I picked mine from VFW.H, because I wanted something geeky that only Windows programmers would understand. Contrary to what some people suppose, "fcc" does NOT refer to the Federal Communications Commission! It's actually an abbreviation of "FOURCC." My signature is a play on its resemblance to the word "Force," and my love of Star Wars.

sysKin
2nd July 2006, 14:36
My surname translates to "siskin".

Morte66
2nd July 2006, 18:42
I'm named after the first NPC you meet in the game Planescape: Torment, a sleazy flying skull called Morte. Only somebody already had Morte, so Morte66 it was.

Arachnotron
2nd July 2006, 18:48
I used to play Doom a lot. In fact, I assembled my first computer just so I could play it. Arachnotron is one of the demons in that game.

2nd July 2006, 19:04
I picked a virtual char name. Since I dont like it a lot, I have often considered to change it to a more fitting to _myself_ but still i havent come up with a better one (i am lazy)

deuce2
2nd July 2006, 22:47
When I was a kid ( a Canadian eh) they called me deuce because my last name is German...and the last part of my name is ...dorf and Dusseldorf is in Germany, I guess; kid logic. Don't ask me, I didn't pick it but it stuck. Since deuce (from the Duss part of Dusseldorf) is two I just put 2 and 2 together and there you have it. :o

Boulder
3rd July 2006, 17:01
Mine comes from the old classic, Boulder Dash. I never was a great fan of the game, but somehow hearing the tune of the first game gets me back to the early 80s.

Yes, I'm an old fart.

Gerard V
3rd July 2006, 22:11
Having read the previous posts I feel ashamed to admit that my nickname is simply my name. I usually sign emails as Gerard V or GV because in New Zealand where I live, people struggle a bit with my surname "Verschuren", and in order to avoid having them mangle it, I abbreviate it to V. This does not prevent them going on to mangle my first name but thats a different story.

I also use this nic as my stage name for hypnosis gigs because "The Amazing Whatever . ." and similar names don't work for me.

It's not much of a backstory... My nick is my last name. It's fairly uncommon, so I rarely run into situations where the user name is already taken and I have to come up with something else.

Firesurfer
5th July 2006, 08:20
I used to play StarWars RPG with some friends. I had a smugglers vessel we called "Eimer" (Bucket). One Session we were chased by some Tie-Figthers. I I flew the bucket close to a sun to get rid of the Ties. Or Gamemaster had a shrewd sense of humor and said: "there's protuberances coming, brace for impact". I turned the ship saying "I'll surf that thing to get away from the Ties". He was impressed, we survived, et voilá: the name of the ship became Firesurfer. I used that nick at various places since then.

On what sort of plutonian keyboard can we find the - with the 0 key ? :D
Oh my it's true, at the very least the english keyboard has this particularity, here the - is with the 6 key ;) The 0 key has the à character (accentuated a, in case you can't see it) ^^

Edit: Actually, I've just noticed on doom9 that the pages are encoded in latin1 (ISO-8859-1), and the special char's aren't replaced by entities (no à to replace the à), so I suspect some of you won't be able to see the "accentuated a" ... sigh

Growing up on DBZ made me like Shenron cuz he makes all their wishes come true (when they gather the 7 spheres and summon him).

Solo_Senshi
2nd March 2007, 02:01
I've been using my nick since since about mid 2004.

Solo = on one's own; alone or unaccompanied
Senshi = Japanese word for warrior/soldier

So it's kinda like the lone warrior or something. Decided to put them together with an underscore, because I'm kinda dorky <_<;

Yeah, pretty lame.

HyperHacker & DarkZell666, that's the QWERTY keyboard, the most common for English-based keyboard makers.
` 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = Backspace
Tab Q W E R T Y U I O P [ ] \
CapsLock A S D F G H J K L ; ' Enter
Shift Z X C V B N M , . / Shift
Ctrl WinKey Alt Spacebar Alt Winkey PrintKey Ctrl

(WinKey = Windows Logo key, used to engage the "Start Menu" under Windows)

As for my name, it's meant to be Traeheurt Mada, or the mirror reverse of Adam Trueheart, one of my RPG characters on another forum.

There are quite some neat findings in this thread, some circumstances of literally "discovering" a nickname posted here are very interesting :)

The numbers originate older than the rest of my name. They have thier roots in pokemon. Simply using my first name and my numbers makes up my first email address.

The first part is derived from 'game player', which is just about all I did (I still love my n64). I guess I thought 'playa' was cooler or something, a friend of mine was talking trash and used the term, so I adopted it for my screen name.

Been with me ever since (~7yrs now I think) :)

A few years ago, we started calling large US stores by their fake French-sounding version (Wal-Mere, Tar-zjay, Arriss-Titterr) and I became "Johnny Mill-aire" (with a strong French sound). It then became Johnny Malaria.

HeadBangeR77
3rd March 2007, 01:47
Mine came from the old days in gymnasium (don't ask me about educational system in Poland :p). I used to watch "Headbanger's Ball", a programme on MTV (was fully free via satellite back then) - pure metal music. It was really late at night, right after "Beavis & Butthead" (:D), on Sundays, so I was half a zombie on Mondays at school. Hence "HeadBangeR", and 77 from my year of birth (there's almost always an account "headbanger" on various forums, so I have to add sth').
I usually use it as a login for various things as well. ;)

Castellanos: I pick this up not because the "Spanish" language, but an argentinian guy called Aaron Castellanos, responsible of bringing the first families, to create one of the first colonies in the country.
Also "castellanos" is the name of a street in my hometown.

Mine originates from the primary school times when all the boys were nicknamed according to this formula:
take the first two letters of your surname and append the first two letters of your given name, thus I became kype.
Soon after the c has been appended at the end as to improve the pronunciation and make it more fancy.
BTW it reads like [kipets] in my slovak mother tongue :p

I use this nickname throughout all internet forums and discussion groups as well.

As for me... it was one of those endless nights back in high school. It must have been 2 or 3 in the morning when the name Blue Misfit came to me out of nowhere. At the time I didn't fit in with everyone else at school, so the Misfit bit seemed apropriate, but the Blue part was random.

At the time I didn't know about the band The Misfits, so that had no factor, despite logic...

I go by Derek in real life BTW :)

since you deny any PM conversation I will ask you here...

why do you insist on using blue as a colour for your answers and why do you have the urgent need of stressing things out in claret bold?? Then, one day signing up for email account in Yahoo, a robot suggested this one..., and this the story :).

The bad thing of this nick is that very easy to spam :(.

BTW, I'll try any of the methods described here to create a new one :D.

Atak_Snajpera means Sniper's atack. I started to use it when I was playing in high school in Quake2 with my friends. I was killing (in game) everybody with RailGun without problems (on the ground ,in air doesn't matter) So my angry friends started to call me Atak Snajpera.
