Better late than never. My search showed that the last invites from fellow forum members were about a year ago. So anybody here still has some invites left rotting somewhere? :)
I dont like the fact that you have to use your cellphone to get an account with them, even though they state its for security reasons blah blah blah...

Everybody has invites. Gmail resets the amount of invites to 100 every few weeks.

I haven't given any away for some months now (just 1), and the counter still says 99 :) Any hints ?

I still consider it odd that all users with Gmail accounts get 100 invites (which get constantly refilled) but they still don't offer an open signing-up. I would offer mine, but, if I remember, this is a UK-specific thing: we have to yourname@googlemail.com instead. If you still one just ask!

It's the same in germany. the trademark gmail belongs to someone else.

Hmm yeah, the official line went something like that. Because I'm interested, would people from other countries like to report whether the gmail.com extension has been changed for new accounts to googlemail.com?

According to Wikipedia it was only in the UK and Germany. The UK section specifically mentioned that Gmail was a existing trademark. I don't recall if if an exact reason was given for Germany.
Also, Google says the reason they restrict accounts to invite/mobiles is to deter spammers from opening multiple accounts. It doesn't seem like it would be effective by itself, but it may work well as a deterrent since there are so many sites that are easier to exploit.

Yeah, that's a good reasoning. But the problem with invitations + a spammer is that as soon as they get hold of a gmail address, they can keep inviting themselves through other spam addresses - right?
