I'm having a few probs locating the latest xvd ds encoder.. is there such a beast?

Not that I know of. Their is a directshow DEcoder for Xvid though. Most people either use VFW, or Video For Windows, or Xvid encraw, a commandline version. You can also use FFDShow for XVID encoding, it is used through a VFW interface.
