View Full Version : x264 calling home?

Well , my first impression with x264 is poor.

For whatever reason, it "calls home" when it runs and REQUIRES that it can call home.

After investing many hours to even get to the pont of being able to have al lI need to rip and x263 vid, my first attempt flopped...because the encoding STOPPED at the point when my firewall disallowed x264's call home.

REMOVE THIS "FEATURE," please.

Also, this codec will only be very widely adapted when it is very easy to use, as in AutoGK style easy.

x264 has no networking code and is not compiled with networking support. Do you mean MeGUI? If so, there is a pack of all necessary files on x264.nl so that you can turn autoupdate off (otherwise, it's just the main executable which requires its support files to be downloaded off the update server instead).

If it is in fact x264.exe you're being warned about, you have another process injecting code into everything that runs, probably either a spyware/trojan or an antivirus/security software.

There are GUIs that are AGK easy, MeGUI's one click and staxrip for instance.

Personally I like having the extra control that an advanced interface such as MeGUI gives me rather than the bare essentials that AutoGK reveals. It's all a matter of personal preference really - whether you prefer simplicity or power.

Edit: should these posts be split?

Our first impression with you is even poorer.
For your information, x264 bears no networking code whatsoever - I'd like to urge you to edit your first post accordingly. Also, make sure to read the first post of this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=51632) about the use of capitalized words when posting on a public forum.

Also, this codec will only be very widely adapted when it is very easy to use, as in AutoGK style easy.
x264 is not a commercial product, so there's no need for it to be "widely adopted" (I hope you meant that). Development is driven by different goals. And why are you so concerned with the success of x264, if you consider it so poor?
Just use another codec, no?

Poorly. Paranoia (or better, Chronic Delusional Disorder) has a poor response to the usual antipsychotics, in opposition to another somewhat related disorder, Paranoid Schizophrenia.
(OT, sorry, but I can't resist!)

No, he's trying to say paranoia is a problematic illness and it's difficult to cure.
So, before getting paranoid, it's better to inform yourself and refrain the pseudo-paranoia until you're completely sure what you're going to say is completely correct :)
In short CyberAnth is not pathologically paranoid (even if he use an unspecified firewall and he doesnt seem to know how it works and probably uses it in the wrong way...), he just didnt get informed and missed to read the forum rules before posting (if he would have used the search function and read the MeGUI dev thread or changelog he would have known why MeGUI - and not x264 - was trying to connect to the internet) and that IMHO is even worse coz he publically accused x264 (and indirectly even MeGUI) devs without any proof and knowledge about what he was talking about.
I can continue saying both x264 and MeGUI are open source projects and he could have checked the source code before speaking and by nature OSS software is "transparent" to the end user coz everyone can verify by himself what the program can and can't do, etc... but i think you already got what im trying to say...
In my country that sort of (false) accusations would be even penally punishable by law... however no one is so nazi here (even me:p)
