Which DivX4 EncodingProg for best quality ?

Hi
I've been encoding with Flask (XMPEG) for a while, but I generally feel limitted with this prog and I'm sure it ain't the best regarding possibilities, performance and QUALITY.
I also intend to use this DivX4 Log utility to get some kind of SBC.
Which prog do you recommend for DivX4 (I'd like to stick to divx4 and not go back to 3.11) ??
Thanks

I started using Gordian Knot when the new 0.21 version appeared not long ago, and I am certainly never going back! The learning curve from xmpeg is probably a little steep, but take the time and learn to use it and it's just great! Read the the guide here on doom9.
You seem to misunderstood the concept of SBC slightly: DivX 4 is already a vbr codec, which is exactly what nandub (sbc) brought to DivX 3. In my experience, the logfile programs (Morphix etc.) are still too early in development to have a serious impact on quality. This will likely change with the next version, where a new version of the logfile will be introduced.

thanks for your answer
And which codec (3.11 or 4) would you recommend to use it with ?

I'm never going back to 3.11. Does that answer your question? =)

Divx 4 + Gknot is a winning combination.
It's fast, very high quality and easy to use.
Read the guide for 5 minutes and you're set.
As for XMpeg - do yourself a favor and remove it from your drive.
This program needs a lot (!) of testing and bugfixing before being usable.
P.s. for some reason, the same movie turned out a lot sharper when GKnot was used (with divx4 2-pass, which is completely automatic).

glenn,
I'm learning Gordian Knot and was curious to know how long it takes you personally to encode a 120 minute dvd rip using Gordian Knot 2pass vbr, divx 4.11 codec?
I know it'll all depend on processor speed, etc, I'm just curious.
Also if you could take the time to answer 2 Q's regarding Gordian Knot, I put some illustrated Q's at: http://www.geocities.com/divx_encode/
Thanks!

Not quite sure...from when I go to sleep till I wake up, usually =] Lemme check some logfiles...
OK, Tomb Raider, PAL region 2 - duration 1:36:25
Total Encoding Time: 8 hours, 7 minutes, 20 seconds.
Including audio and separate credits encoding.
This is on a Duron 800, using divx 4.02 (4.11 has problems on my machine, for some reason... but speed should be the same).
Also if you could take the time to answer 2 Q's regarding Gordian Knot, I put some illustrated Q's at: http://www.geocities.com/ divx_encode/

Your questions: Those two settings apply to the audio of the file, and they're perfectly good the way you've set them up now (same as I use).
Hope that clears a few things up then! =]

I have to agree with the rest of the guys. Nothing comes close to latest version of Gknot.

The quality of my 1CD rips is something that blows the minds of my less informed friends. And I use Nandub. I run a AthlonXP and I find DivX4.11 to be buggy and even though it can make good rips I feel Nandub is the King and gives me far less problems.
Maybe you could say there both good..... but I have incountered to many bugs using DivX4.11

So what does it matter what program you use to encode? The codec is what does the encoding, not the program. The program just feeds the frames to the encoder. Unless I'm missing something. Just how does Gnot produce better image quality than vdub for example?

Gknot uses Vdub for DivX4 encoding. So you really can't compare them. Don't think of Gknot as an encoder app, it's just a tool that allows you to achieve optimal results such as resolution, etc.

And GKnot offers additional features, like separate credits encoding, that allows more bits for the actual movie = better quality.
GKnot just makes life easier! =)
