I would like to encone a movie in divx 4 two passes.
Do I need to set fast recompress or full processing mode in virtual dub?
I think fast recompress method is faster that I ask.
And second question. What version of virtual dub I need?

I'd guess fast recompress is ok, you'll need VirtualDub 1.4.7 and yes fast recompress is faster than full processing mode.

You must use YUV sources for fast recompress, e.g. AviSynth frame server. If you use VirtualDub's standard filters, then you need to use full processing mode.

I know what is AviSynth and how to use it, but I don't know what is YUV sources. Can you explain this. Is there a manual page about it somewhere?

All DVD's are in YUV colorspace. When u capture from a VCR you can select YUV colorspace and the do the encoding afterwards in fast recompress. If you capture in RGB mode you don't need to use fast recompress.

im capturing in yuv, will there be any quality improvement if i use full processing over fast recompress (as instructed in the gknot guide)

Not at all.
There's no downside to YUV except that the filters in VirtualDub work in RGB color space.
When capturing you don't need filters.
Filtering can be done later...

When capturing YUV and encode in fast recompress the process is faster.
I only experience shit in the movies when i do fast recompress from a DvD using Nandub(so i use antishit with full processing mode). When encoding a captured film i've never experienced any shit problems.

Why not use Divx 4? It's faster and the quality is excellent.:D

The quality is very good but nandub is still better and more flexible. I'll post a comparison soon in the forum
