I just bought a Philips DVD Recorder model DVDR3455/37. I played a disk through and at about 45 minutes is skipped skipped a couple seconds. Then it did it again a few minutes later and after about 15 minutes it had froze and jumped a few times. I took the disk and put it in another player, a cheaper Emerson that is a few years old and went to the spot where it skipped in the philips. It played through perfectly.

Is the player defective? It's brand new. Should I return it and try another one. I bought this one because it has the HDD.

Hi!I took the disk and put it in another player, a cheaper Emerson that is a few years old and went to the spot where it skipped in the philips. It played through perfectly.Chances are, if you "went to the spot where it skipped in the philips" and then played it on your Philips, it also wouldn't skip.

The valid comparison would be to play it from the beginning on your Emerson (just as you did on your Philips) and see if it exhibits the same behavior.

Is it an original, commercial DVD you played on the Philips, or is it a burned copy?

If it's a burned copy, what brand and format of burnable media did you use? What speed did you use for burning?

I did go back to the spots using the Philips to see if it would do the same and it did. It is a backup copy burned on Taiyo Yuden media TYG02-8x DVD-R The burn was at 4x.

I had a Sony,an older one that would do the same thing. It did it on pressed DVD's and on back-ups. I could stick them in the other player and they would be fine. I just figured it was the player and it's age. Maybe the laser is just finding something it doesn't like at that spot and the other player isn't...I'm stumped. I will burn another copy and see if it still does it in the same spots. Also, the new Philips should play all formats DVD+-R and DVD+-RW and DVD+-R-DL. It even plays Divx, mpg, avi etc.... Great player for the money and had a 160GB HDD.

Any other suggestions?
