i had the choice of Toshiba SD-3990 and Philips DVP-5140 at a store near me, both for $60 or $70. how are those players, or is there something in similar price range that i could order somewhere easily for the united states?

i acutally bought the DVP-5140, but i'm considering returning it because it has a couple of small things that annoy me about it.

i just read a thread about the SD-3990, and it seems it supports xvid GMC which i would find a VERY nice feature.

so what would be your vote for the best, cheap, xvid/divx player avaliable in the US?

I asked somewhat the same question a week ago, and the query has been pleasantly ignored ever since. :( (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=836754#post836754)

So if you are into video, my conclusion is that it sucks to be a US citizen. :p (Heh... and that's probably true on many levels.)

Well.... I'm unable to help anybody living in the US, as I have no idea as to what's available!

Branded players fitted with MediaTek's chip-set are always a safe buy and can cope with most levels of MPEG-4 ASP.

Personally though, I would start looking-out for players branded fitted with Zoran's Vaddis 888 chip-set, as it offers everything (if not slightly more that) the MediaTek chip-set has to offer, plus HDMI ;)

But that's just me....

x264 and hd files (>720x)...Eibwen made no mention of this... So I don't understand your point!
