@alfixdvd: a19a is talking about a standalone.
@a19a:
There are so many: Philips, Xoro, Toshiba, LG, Sony... to name just a few.
If you look in this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=110273
There is a Tevion who actually can play far more that actually you are looking for... and if you don't live in Germany...
I suggest take a look in the forum. :search:

Hi,
There are days like that: mischiefvous.
I believe a19a is talking about a SAP: standalone player. If so I can't recommend mine cause it does everything he wants except play ac3 files :D

Thank you all :)
I would like to buy a Sony or Philips player then, PLEASE could you suggest me some Sony or Philips models that read .ac3 files? I need to play .mpg videos too (I record both .ac3 audio files and .mpg videos from Satellite with my dvb pci card).

I searched for a Philips, but all the models I checked can read only AVI/MPEG/MP3 audio/video containers, while I must be sure to have a player capable of reading standalone *.ac3 files* and also *.mpg files*. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease help me!

Thank you all :) I need to play .mpg videos too (I record both .ac3 audio files and .mpg videos from Satellite with my dvb pci card). Are you capturing the audio and video streams separately?
If so you will need to mux the streams together (into to .MPG container) before you'll be able to get a stand-alone player to play them.
Most stand-alone players can play std-def .MPG's (MPEG-2 video with an accompanying the .AC3 audio stream) these days... My Pioneer DV-575A can do it. So can the kids LG FFH-DV25 ;)

Using a dvb-s pci sat card in the pc, you can record in .ts format (transport stream) a channel. So you can record how many audio tracks you want, and video of course. When I demux my .ts file, I get an audio track (for example .ac3 if the channel broadcasting was in dolby digital), and a video file .mpv in MPEG-2 format. Then I mux them together and I have a mpg file or I can author a dvd. As you said, many players can play this stuff. But if I record from a *dolby digital radio* I get only an audio track in .ac3 format and then I must have a player that can read this file! I had a dvd player that now is broken and could play this stuff (Medion MD40814), now I need a quality player that can read this kind of file and mpg video of course. It would be great if it could play .dts files too.
ideas?

There are applications, such as HDTVtoMPEG2 that can re-mux .TS captured files directly into .MPG files...
With regard to your DolbyDigital radio stations, very few stand alone players can play RAW (elementary) .AC3 streams.
However, you may have more luck by converting your .AC3 at 48.0KHz sources to AC3 at 44.1 KHz within .WAV
You might also have success with adding a still image together with your .AC3 stream and muxing them both into the VOB container!

Yes it is reported as so in the DivxTest (link in my previous post).
But, as SMD has pointed out, nearly all DVD/Divx players can play Ac3 when muxed in DVD envelope (TS_VIDEO).
Beside the processes pointed out (free but not all in one or one button start) there is a trial of a commercial program which gives good results, AudioDvdCreator: http://www.audio-dvd-creator.com/
It's not a one click in the sense that you need to demux your ac3 files first, but you can mix different audio format in a video DVD compliant form.

Thank you all for your help! :)
Please, consider that I don't want to recompress or remux my audio tracks at all. I want original quality and so I need a player that can read .ac3 files (and .mpg too).
setarip_old: your Philips has same chipset as my Medion...can it play .mpg and .dts files too?
Any other experience with .ac3 players?

But any images will have to be converted to the .BMP format first.... It does the job very well, once you get the hang of it :)

Which is the best chipset for my interests?

Sigma, MediaTek or Vaddis chip-sets will be fine....
I recommend steering far away from any devices fitted with ESS chip-sets, as they offer very poor MPEG-4 support :scared:

I read that all ESS Vibratto II players can read .ac3!
What about Mediatek, Sigma...?

Personally speaking though I'd prefer to mux say an album or lyric sheet image with my AC3 or DTS stream into the VOB container. And buy a good quality player fitted with a decent chip-set ;)

@BigDidBut, I understood "a19a" to be asking about playback of freestanding .AC3 files...
True, and I could not advertise my MTK1389 player at that time (beginning of the thread) :D
But at one time SMD has introduced other possibilities like
- Making 44.1 Ac3 in Wav
- Making video DVD compliant streams with Menu/pictures/ac3 audio
So it seems at this time we have:
- players accepting ac3 files as input: older ESS chipsets and a very few of the new ones
- players accepting nearly everything (Wav, MP3 ...) but not ac3 files : MTK1389 or other chipsets
I haven't try the 44.1 ac3 in Wav but it seems easy :)
On the other hand there is no menus so Muxman or audiodvdcreator could offer a better interface...
Definitely the buyer/user choice.
