View Full Version : P-UOPS and subtitles again!

I'm just ripping my final Enteprise series and for a change I wanted to keep the original layout of the last disc which has two eps and special features. I blanked the first episode in Shrink as well as all auido/subs that are not german or english (logical remapping is turned off). Additionally I use PgcEdit's Plugin to remove the prohibited user operations in both ifos and vobs.

Now when I play the DVD in PowerDVD or on my standalone, I can't switch off subtitles! Is this because the player can't find the right stream cause there references are messed up as a later check with PgcEdit revealed? Even if this were the case shouldn't I be able to turn the current sub off? I fixed the number of streams with PgcEdit but even after that the option to turn subtitles off is greyed out in PowerDVD.

Some players (hardware ones mainly) have trouble with "holes" in the streams.

I also found PowerDVD v6 had enormous trouble with subbies being turned on or off through a menu (but were OK with the right click shortcut). This is cured in v7.

The subpic can also be forced. Check the "forced start" with DVDSubEdit.

Man, that tool rocks! Anyway, there are no forced subs in this, and even if there were, wouldn't my removal of both ifo and vob p-uops dealt with that? I've redone it again with DVD Shrink and logical remapping on and this time I could turn off the subs.

Only thing that bothers me now is that the german subtitle is on when the episode is played although I did not select it in the settings menu of the DVD nor of my standalone. I've traced the the DVD up to the beginning of the first episode but there are so many GPRMs said concerning audio/subs streams, they also have audio and substream set in one command, but no "turn subs on" command. I guess I'm just gonna live with it rather than spending hours browsing GPRMs to see which one of them apart from selecting the right sub also turns it on.

If a subpic is displayed, it can be for 3 reasons:
1) The subpic is explicitely set with a SetSTN command.
2) The subpic is forced (with Forced Start)
3) No SetSTN command at all are used before the main title is played. Therefore, the subpic is still in its "unset" state when the title is played, and the player should select the right subpic automatically for you, based on its setup.

Maybe the fact that you have remapped the streams with Shrink has moved the german subtitle stream at the place of your normal preferred language (english?)
IMO, you should verify if the subpic (and audio) selection menu works as expected.

I always set em to german audio and no subs so my little sister can watch them too. No biggy for me to switch to english with my remote.

The selection menu works as expected. There are no forced streams and the only SetSTN I found are:

[61 00 00 01 00 92 00 00] 4 Set gprm(1) =(mov) sprm(18:Preferred sub-picture language)

[41 00 00 8C 8D 00 00 00] 1 (SetSTN) Set Audio stream = gprm(12) ; Set Sub-picture stream = gprm(13)

[61 00 00 0D 00 82 00 00] 3 Set gprm(13) =(mov) sprm(2:Sub-picture stream number)

[61 00 00 0E 00 82 00 00] 16 Set gprm(14) =(mov) sprm(2:Sub-picture stream number)

Being the newbie to DVD commands that I still am, I exptected the code to say something like "on" but it doesn't seem to be necessary to turn them on. Since there are "holes" between the streams anymore everything should work fine.

Anyway, I'm not gonna waste hours on this, I've just been curious, thanks for you info.

@r0lZ - he said logical remapping was off, so there would have been no stream shift.

Say, blutach, would you be so kind as to look at my related thread here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=111066)? It's been languishing in the DVD Authoring forum for a while :P

Thank you
