Hey guys,
Big thanks to doom9 for in the excellent guide on encoding DivX's under linux, works wonderfully.
It's just missing that section on decrypting the DVD... Does anyone know how to do this?
TIA

i had this problem too as i wanted to use a linux box for encoding while i was using my windows pc normally
nothing seemed obvious to me, although there is quite possibly an easy solution, so i just ripped under windows and copied the files across

UTH, that's pretty much what I've been doing... It'd still be nice just to be able to say I did it all under linux :D
dvdpunk81, I only happened to find it from a news post on doom9.org. It's since rolled off the main page into the archives.
The link you want is, http://www.doom9.org/divx_linux_guide.html

there is linux dodsrip, the 'first' dvdripper of the world.
Then, we can use transcode with the option dvd to select the correct angle/title/chapter.

you should be able to compile vstrip under linux. as for the authentication.. use a linux dvd player

It did compile nice and easy, and it seems to work, but I keep running into this error "* Lost sync [@LBA 524349], was expecting PACKET_START_CODE_PREFIX!" Either happens right at the start of the rip or somewhere in the middle. I guess I've only tried this with one DVD so there's no final verdict but I'm wondering if this is a Linux problem specifically... I guess this thread is probably the wrong place to ask whether people run into the same problem on Windows, and if there's a workaround.

at least linux users (generally) don't ask me how to use the command-line ;).
lost-sync: maybe a scratch on the dvd?

maven: to make your prog more accessible for linux geeks you should remove the help screen that comes up when you type vstrip, and come up with a man page that no normal human being understands and that gives completely useless examples. And then.. the command line options are way too logical... they must make no sense without having read the manpage.
and error messages should probably be given in machine language..
just a few thoughts ;)
