I need to encode Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. It's 207 minutes black and white with mono audio. I'm using the GKnot method from doom9's guide and am wondering if there any settings that I should use differently from a regular color DVD in order to get the best compression out of this. I'd like to get this on to 1 CD and still look good if possible. Thanks.

1 CD will look very bad. I attempted this several weeks ago, but found that I lost the subtitles so I put it off until I can get my hands on the DVD again.
There are several reasons why it needs 2-3CDs to look good.
1. It's full frame, so there are more bits to encode.
2. It's very long, most people cut off 1 cd a 110-120 minutes, unless it's a very compressable source like 'the matrix'.
3. There is a ton of noise because it's an old film. The noise is mostly luma noise (flicker) and a frame float,( I don't know the technical term for this, but it looks like the film is being projected on the side of a tent on a windy day, the image distorts and moves between frames) there is also some scratches and other marks on the frames, but those are not as hard for the encoder because they are limited to a small area of the frame, where the first two types of noise affect the whole frame.
try checking out this thread from divx3, I think everything mentioned applies to divx4 also. Here (http://rilanparty.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8668) (I haven't gotten to Yojimbo yet, but it doesn't appear to be nearly as bad a 7 samurai.)
