Could you add a BD general forum.

What is "BD general"?

For Blu-ray? Its not even available :o
So far there is no discussion about it which would clutter up other forums - so why another subforum?

I'd rather there not be a Blu-ray section added. Why invite flame wars between HD-DVD and Blu-ray?
Why not "Next-Gen DVD" or the "Biggest Copy Protection Disk Ever!" ;)

Blu-Ray and HD DVD forums would make no sense. This forum is about video conversion, BD and HD DVD do not (yet) have anything to do with that. No one is able to rip video from those at the moment.

It might be worth adding in a new forums for VC-1 later down the track, but I don't think anything should be added at the moment.

Yep, There is precious little WMV stuff happening at all, but there's half a chance once the newer disc formats start making a mark that more tools will be developed and people will want to know about it.

There was a WMV8 forum.. it died to to inactivity. And the policy on forum creation and closures still remains unchanged.. they are dependant on traffic, not what might be. Since both HD formats will start slow (or rather, HD DVD already has), at some point there'll probably be a combined HD DVD/Blu-ray forum at some point and we'll see if that ever needs splitting in the future.

How about merging RV forum in New A/V? Not much active threads...

I would not mind. Sorry there has not been much RealVideo news to discuss lately. If it had been up to me, there would have been.

hehe... maybe a BD/HD-DVD forum will be useful when (not if) they become rippable.
from the looks of things, they'll be burnable well before they're rippable. so it may be worth having sooner. but doom9's policy is a good one - don't do anything until posts about BD/HD-DVD start to dominate in other subforums.

How about re-structuring to something like this: -

I like SMD's proposal and in my opinion - even though my opinion doesn't count that much - it does makes sense...

it was suggested above to drop the real forum as well. I've never been in there, so maybe views from users of it wouldbe helpful.

Every post is about ERMP and how to covnert RM to something else. Other forums can handle that.

RealVideo forum can die for now. I have nothing to contribute or moderate. It is not helpful for anyone at the moment, and traffic is very low.

It's always a shame when a section goes, as keeping them makes things so much easier to find.... but I do understand Doom9's reasons for keeping the forum leen....

i guess merging realvideo and new video codecs also depends on whether rv11 issues will be discussable in the avc forum or not ;)

It will not.

So you guys are working on another totally new video codec then?
Hopefully you'll create a direct-show decoder filter for what-ever it is ;)

There are some interesting posts around the net for what some have coined mini-HDDVD (create a disk iso with movie factory 5 in hddvd format but burn the iso to a DVD+r.) These disks play on the toshiba A1 (hddvd player) . it can be used for home videos but also fair use archives of dvds (after some upconverting with the proper filters). some are directly using .ts files directly if they already in the right format. makes getting a A1 more worthwhile.

I love my HD-A1, but I can understand a BD supporter's mindframe, though; MPEG 2 is going to be mighty hard to finally let go of. ;) :D

Oh come on.. HD DVD / Blu-ray both allow VC-1/AVC/MPEG2.. its really getting tiresome to keep repeating this :o

giving happy the benefit of the doubt, he may be referring to the fact that sony has been just using mpeg2 and all the hddvds released so far are vc-1. while they both are capable of the different formats.. that hasnt been the reality (so far.) I hope that if sony (and/or its mates) are pressured out of using mpeg2 ( comparison reviews i have read have been giving hddvd the nod over bluray) before 50gb disks come out, that they use avc over vc1.

If we have BD-50, MPEG 2 is ok, but with BD-25, MPEG-2 is pretty bad. Not all the time, just with longer movies with lots of action.

The Xvid and Gordian Knot are fairly active.. forums generally arent consumed unless they are inactive. they also are just part of doom9 in a historical sense. The divx encoding forum is a tad slower although but with a lack of a general asp forum there is no forum to consume it. To keep my post on topic i'll toss out this.. mostly the same forums but split a bit
MPEG-4 ASP and Co.
(Auto) Gordian Knot
Encoder GUIs
Xvid
Divx
Alternative Video Codecs (same except leave out vc-1 in description)
Alternative a/v containers
HD-DVD and Blue-Ray
Mpeg-4 AVC and VC-1
CCE
Other Mpeg-2 Encoders
Authoring
Authoring to be added maybe not right away...

new video codecs is the general mpeg-4 asp format forum atm. i dont think there is the need for an own asp forum, as asp is imho an outdated format and there are not many important asp codecs next to divx and xvid
i dont think it makes sense to combine avc and vc-1 to one forum, as both are different formats and avc has so much to be discussed on its own, as seeable in the current forum, it can have its own forum
imho it would be more questionable whether x264 shouldnt get its own forum
vc-1 has on the other hand not much to discuss as there simply is one codec till now (m$'), one that isnt much used by doom9 folks up to now (yeah, there is now lots of talk because the codec is new, but this will go down again with time). vc-1 might altogether become more important in the future (maybe also not if doom9 folks dont like it) but atm i think it has its good place in the general new video codecs forum

AVC has its own forum for a purpose and traffic is still considerable.. adding another codec to it would be counterproductive. Depending on whether VC-1 manages to capture a sizeable audience, it will get its own forum.
For HD DVD and Blu-Ray authoring, please use the DVD authoring forum for now.. when the time comes a separate forum will be created, but it makes no sense to create a new forum that nobody uses.. and right now both HD formats have yet to prove themselves and attract an audience.
