Hi, first Post.. Forgive me if I am out of place..

Ok, I HAD DVD playback ability with Windows Media Player. It was not from XP already, it appears it was a tool that a ripping pack had installed. When I uninstalled the ripping pack (I cant remember what Pack) I lost DVD playback, I did not notice it for a few days so I dont know what pack it was or what tool. does anyone konw what it may have been? Or what can be installed ot restore DVD playback?

I like WMP, it never fails me, just a pain that it does not have a
codec to do DVD's.
That of cource is not Microsofts fault, just the movie gods saying you have to pay for the player and the movie....

ahh well...

When you install a "real" DVD player like WinDVD or PowerDVD you can also use WMP to watch DVDs because it then uses the filters installed with these products.

This may sound strange because you probably wouldn't watch DVDs in WMP when you have a better DVD player, but since most mpeg2 decoder filters are commercial products you actually have to buy them. The ones in the rippack you mentioned were probably illegally distributed.

There are however two other possibilities. There's a shareware mpeg2 decoder called Elecard and doom9 recently had a free mpeg2 decoder in his news. But the Elecard filter places a little watermark in your movies until you register and I've read that the free filter causes problems for some people. I never have used one of those though, so I'm only telling what I heard about it.
