I am trying to learn Gordian Knot by encoding the first chapter only of the movie Roadtrip, but I am having trouble. Here are my steps:

1)I use smartripper to rip the first chapter of the movie, all is good.

2)load up DVD2AVI and watch a bit of the movie. It is at 29.970fps and around 97% FILM, so I enable "Forced Film", set colour to "YUV", and Dolby Digital to "Demux All Tracks". I end up with a roadtrip.d2v file, and two .ac3 files, one is 448kbps and the other is 192kbps.

3)I open the d2v file in Gordian Knot, and it has 23.976FPS

4)I go to the Bitrate tab and set "Audio A" to 448kbps and "Audio B" to 192kbps, then I select "1 CD" then I set "Interleaving & AVI-Overhead" to 2x ac3

5)I go to the Resolution tab, set it to anamorphic (cause it is), there are no black bars in the video, so I don't need to crop, then I move the slider until "Bits/(Pixel*Frame)" is around 0.2

******Here is my problem******
I can't get "Bits/(Pixel*Frame)" down that low, the lowest it goes is 1.588 and that is when I set the resolution to 800x432. I don't think this is right, so I just go with 640x352 which gives a value of 2.436. I then proceed to encode it (leaving all the default values alone) and once it is done, I try to view it in WMP, but nothing is shown, just a black screen. Since the .avs isn't created properly, I can't go on. By the way, I am using DivX 4.

NOTE: I already had DivX 4 installed before I installed GKnot, and then GKnot installed it again, could this have caused the problem?

I hope this is enough information for someone to help me out.

Cheers.

hmm, is this a mega short movie or is the video data missing?
2 AC3 audio tracks + video on 1 cd ?????? Seems impossible to me (in decent quality)

try watching the video data in gknot/virtualdub, is the movie complete? did you rip the complete dvd? Did you select all VOB files in dvd2avi?

Hope this helps...

This is logical because you have ripped only the first chapter, let's say 20 min's??For the rules of the guide you HAVE to rip all the DVD.And for the sound select Demux Track 1.If you select demux all track then if the movies has 6 audio tracks it will demux them all and (I suppose) you need only the english one which is track 1(not always)!! So If you want to test forget the Rules and go for less MB.

And one more thing...
Do you really wanna stick with those two .ac3 tracks???
Rip only one and convert it to .mp3 if you're aiming for 1cd. If you're doing a 2cd rip - that's fine - it can be as it is now (although you need only one .ac3 track).
take care

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the tips, but they don't solve my problem. I am only ripping the first chapter which is a little over 7 min. Why can't I get the Bits/(Pixel*Frame) down to 0.2 and why doesn't the .avs play in WMP?

Thanks in advance.

You can't get Bits/(Pixel*Frame) down to 0.2 because your movie (chapter) is too short. If you really want to get 0.2 with 7 minutes of video you will have to lower the final filesize.
I guess your ripped chapter is about 300 MB. So you are actually trying to get something bigger than the original if you want to fill a CD with it.
I suggest you check "calculate filesize" in the GKnot bitrate tab. Then you enter a bitrate of 1000 kbit for a resolution of 640x352 and give it a try.

Alright, that makes sense. But I'm still confused as to why I can't get the .avs to play in WMP. Sorry for all the questions, I'm new and stupid.

you can't play the avs in wmp because you didn't install the FULL gknot package.

But I did, the only thing I didn't install was the DivX 3.11 codec because I don't use it.

install again, FULL pack, then reboot.
