is there a way to mux aac audio into a xvid video file? right now i use mp3, but aac sounds much better at much lower datarates

you can even mux aac in avi with avimuxgui but it's not recommended.

Or yet Mkvmerge GUI for muxing in matroska (.mkv)

mp4box, mkvtoolnix and avimuxgui can do the job :)

Hmmm...
Even good 'ol mp4UI can be used to create MP4 muxes that will play back perfectly well in software and hardware players!
But remember to remove any packed bit-stream....

i can only repeat: dont use mp4ui, there are simply way too many issues (check my mp4 faq)
