Can anyone tell me about the Philips DVP5960, a new Divx Ultra player? Like what chipset does it have? And how does it compare to the DVP5140?

The only things I can tell you - but which you may already know - is that it adds the HDTV-useful features of upscaling and an HDMI connector.
From looking at the box, the other specifications seemed to be the same. When I was shopping, it was about $20-25 more than the 5140, and I wasn't hooking it up to an HDTV, so I went with the 5140.
I was just about to ask about this player.
Most critically what chipset does it use?
Does it have a USB port like the 5140?
I've read it doesn't have a super-video output?
Circuit City has it on sale for $70 this week and there might be a 10% off coupon possible. After issues with the dvp642 I wanna be really careful (can't believe I am considering another phillips device)

Thanks SMD, you are ontop of things as always. Does anything on there give you a hint to as the chipset it uses?
Apparently the region hack for the 5140 and the 5960 are the same - no mention of a macrovision hack/downgrade like the dvp642 though.
added: there is at least one report of the 5140 not being able to play GMC encodings so here we go again with philips choice of chipsets...

I got an error yesterday with my 5960 that it does not support GMC and..something else. It's in the manual.

5140's a Mediatek. 5960 is probably the same.
Ah. Okay, one more player I will be avoiding then.
Thanks to everyone for all the feedback!
For me, Mediatek is a reason to buy a player, not to avoid it. The thing I don't like at many Philips players is because don't have 5.1 analog output. The same thing for the LG players.

You may have noticed however, that those dumb asses over at Philips have elected not to fit 6Ch analogue outputs to any of their new players, despite the fact MediaTek's chip-set offers on-board SACD, DVD-A and even AAC-LC decoding!
Maybe they lowered the costs with 1 euro/unit because they used only stereo output. ;)

Maybe they lowered the costs with 1 euro/unit because they used only stereo output. ;)Indeed.... how short sighted is that!
Mind you... I don't think it will be very long before manufacturers will start charging much more for players fitted with both analogue and digital outputs.
Effectively "price-fixing/forcing" people into buying digital only connected devices :scared:

Are there any players (at a reasonable price) that have good support for just about any divx\xvid file? I now have a Kiss dp-1000. It's good enough, when it works.... the only problem is that it fails too often.

Only the Zoran Vaddis 888 chip-set (which is only around three months old) is capable of supporting 3-warp-point GMC.
However, more tests will need to be conducted to determine its reliability!
Cheers
