View Full Version : Philips DVP-5140 'DivX Ultra' player

Picked one of these up over the weekend for about $55 US to replace my dying DVP-642 (drive was getting VERY loud).
I just use it on a 27-inch bedroom TV, so I didn't need anything particularly fancy.
So far, so good. After life with the ESS in the 642, the Mediatek chip in this thing certainly does handle a lot more stuff than the 642 :D QPEL, stuff encoded with custom quant matrices...
Oddly enough, I haven't tried anything that requires the 'DivX Ultra' capabilities yet, even though I think this is the first player to market in the US to support it (I've only seen it appear on store shelves in the last week or two)
I've taken a few pictures comparing the two units and posted them on a quickie web page I put up on my ISP webspace. (http://home.wi.rr.com/ntngod/dvp642_vs_dvp5140/) It may be of interest to other DVP-642 owners in the US thinking about upgrading....
(And if European members wonder why the DVP-642 sold so many units in the US - it's because our choices in MPEG-4-capable players have been pretty slim compared to elsewhere until recently - still are, compared to Europe. The 642 was cheap and sold everywhere; the DVP-5140 is probably going to follow in its footsteps - cheap and ubiquitous at the big retailers.)

Thanks for compiling such a detailed comparison :D
Nice to see Philips have gone with one of the MediaTek chip-sets ;)
Cheers
Yeah, thanks for the write-up.
I have a question. Like you stated in your "Other odds and ends" section, it's the little things that you don't notice are important until you no longer have them. :) Case in point, my current DVD/HD player/recorder has not the ability to display the time remaining--as opposed to the "Time Elasped" you mention. This is the first DVD player I've ever owned that didn't have that simplistic functionality. (Why do I care how much time has elasped? It's not like have the chapter lengths memorized for every DVD I own!)
Anyway, does this player (DVP-5140) have the ability to display on-screen how much time is remaining in the chapter/title/etc.?

Yeah... when you hit the DISPLAY key, it shrinks the picture and brings up a screen (http://home.wi.rr.com/ntngod/dvp642_vs_dvp5140/images/dvp5140_OSD_1.jpg) you can scroll up and down using the arrow keys. Time remaining/elapsed is one of the listings you can toggle.
Here's a link to the manual in PDF form on Philips' site (it's about 2MB): DVP-5140 manual (http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/d/dvp5140_37/dvp5140_37_dfu_aen.pdf)

I bought this player yesterday.
It's not really easy to read subtitles. Apart from the fact that the font is horrible, the grey background is ugly and long sentences "fall of the screen"(!), they could be a bit (or perhaps a lot) brighter... The position on the screen is also wrong, far too high up.
And whoever came up with the idea for that stupid "DOS-style" menu ought to be punished. ;) It's ugly, clumsy and at times, with names that have the same beginning, it's completely useless.
How on earth are things like these possible? Don't they test their own products (whichever company is to blame)? You don't have to be a NASA scientist to notice such obvious problems.
Just a few early impressions. Apart from that, I don't know much about this player yet. :D

Another annoyance: it doesn't load subtitles (srt) for avi files automatically.

Are you in North America, Europe, or elsewhere?
The stock North American firmware does, provided the filenames of the .SRT and .AVI are identical. (Before posting this, I just tested an AVI/SRT combo to make absolutely, positively sure).
When I got the machine, I compared firmware screens from someone with the European model, and there were some differences. The North American model was introduced a month or two later than the European model, I believe, so it likely has a different/newer firmware.

In Europe.
I have to enable subtitles (not for dvd) with the remote control. Perhaps you're right about the firmware. Unfortunately there is no info about different versions on the Philips site. The latest version only adds support for Cyrillic languages, so that won't help.
I'll update anyway and see what happens.

I may not be understanding correctly.
When I play an AVI file, it loads the .SRT automatically - but if I want the subs to appear onscreen, I do have to hit the SUBTITLE button.
They don't appear onscreen by default (I'd find that very annoying, personally, but everyone has their own preferences).

We're talking about the same thing then. :D
I had a Kiss DP-1000 before, subtitles for avi were enabled automatically. I assumed this player would do the same, but since it doesn't work for you either....
At least there should have been an option in the menu to enable it.
I have sent an e-mail to Philips Support. Let's see what they have to say (although it may be weeks if not months before they reply, if they do that at all).

i also have both these players, so thanks a lot for this comparison to see what has changed
I wondered how you got the idx/sub subtitles to work, i tried burning with idx/sub the same name as the avi (tho on recolection i can't remember if it was still rar'd or not, so it might have actually been idx/rar that i tried), but did you multiplex the subs or not?
also on srt subtitles they are cropped at 36 chars it seems on the 5140, i have no clue what the 642 does in that case tho.
the 5140 supports longer filenames i've noticed as well (14 chars, it seems from the disc i'm loooking at, i think the 642 supported 8 chars?)
i really dislike that the dvd player shuts off after leaving it paused or on the menu for like 20 mins or something, i like to have a disc burned with like a full season of a tv show, and just leave it paused all day, or watch some tv instead of the disc, then come back to it at night and start exactaly where i left off, the 642 did that fine, the 5140 has a screen saver, then shuts it self off, also another petpeeve on the 5140 is that i can't just press the eject button when the player is off, i have to put power, then wait like 5-10 seconds till i can eject the disc, i'm pretty sure on the 642, and most other dvd players, i could push the eject button and it would automatically turn on and eject the disc as quick as possible.
other than those small things the 5140 is obviously an improvement to the 642

Yeah, they have to be IDX/SUB form, not IDX/RAR, to work.

one more question about subtitles i just thought of, is there a way to get srt subtitles to display the language? i've tried a couple of ways of putting it in the filename that doesn't seem to work
i had a two avi movie, and subtitles for each avi, and it was in the format of:
name.of.movie.xvid.cd1.avi or something like that, then:
name.of.movie.xvid.cd1.eng.srt
name.of.movie.xvid.cd2.eng.srt
for the subtitles, and i think i had an option of either of those subtitle files for each of the halfs (so i had subtitle 1/2 for the first half, and subtitle 2/2 for the second half, listed while watching either half)
then now i have one that is:
name of movie.cd1.avi
and same as the other ones for the subtitles, and i only get one option for each half of the movie, which is much more correct, so it seems it uses only a certian number of tokens of the filenames to look for the subtitles
this is where both halfs were burned to a dvd+rw

Not I've been able to find...

just for reference of anyone, my problem with the idx/sub is ACTALLY that i had like:
Movie.CD1.avi
Movie.cd1.idx
i just burned a disc like that but with srt subs, and it didn't work, that being the only problem that i can see
so whatever part of the movie name that it uses to match the subs to the movie need to match case-sensitive wise
so i might have to just out of pure curosity try idx/rar or idx/zip sometime

Does this player support aspect ratio signalling, i.e. if I set pixel aspect ratio to 16:9 NTSC during encode of a 720x480 DVD source it will stretch the image properly?

How do you actually update the firmware? It is in .bin format and none of the burning programs I have can handle it, not even IMGburn. I converted it to iso, with bin2iso, before burning, but the player didn't do anything with this disk.
I was told to update by the Philips helpdesk, after complaining about the awful way the player handles separate subtitles (although this might not help at all. the only change in the two recent firmware updates was "Add DivX subtitle with Cyrillic selection", which won't do any good).
Only guessing as I do not have this player, but for my Panasonic DVR, one just creates a simple data CD. That's all. When the disc is placed in the drive, the player just scans the disc, sees the .bin file, (presumably) checks the file to see if it's a valid firmware update (i.e., reads a proprietary header or something), and then proceeds from there.
Perhaps this drive works the same way. <shrug>

Thank you both. That was pretty easy. :thanks:
Unfortunately it didn't change anything. Subtitles are still maltreated. Long sentences don't fit and are simply chopped off at the end. And the placement, almost 9 centimeters from the bottom of the screen, is ridiculous (I won't even start about the various causes of the poor legibility).
Someone must have been sleeping while developing the firmware (or the chip, I don't know which of the two is responsible).

I have a Philips 5960 ultra that I bought at Circuit City. It also has very short file names. The other thing I do not like is that when it is playing you can't seem to get any infomation about the file like: full file name, codec, bitrate, resolution, not any details that both my pioneer or avalon player show.
It does do ffwd better than any other divx player I have owned; my pioneer is painful when it comes ffwding.

Couple of questions to DVP-5140 owners:
1. Can you encode this player for "all regions" DVD playback same way as 642?
2. Any improvements with "audio track delay" issue, when watching some avi files, comparing to 642?
3. Just to be sure: does US version player supports both PAL and NTSC?
Please advise.

1.I don't know
2. I don't know, what was the problem?
I'm not in the US (Europe), but I can't imagine that version will be different.
3. From the manual:" This DVD player is compatible with both NTSC and PAL".
It has an option in the menu for selecting PAL, NTSC or Multi (the output format will be in accordance with the video signal of the disc with that option).

20th July 2006, 13:53
is there also progressive output for both NTSC and PAL discs on the component connections?
bolke
20th July 2006, 15:14
I can't check that.
However, there is nothing in the manual that indicates it won't work with either PAL or NTSC.
This is all that is mentioned about it:
"Important: The progressive scan video quality is only possible when using Y Pb Pr and a progressive scan TV is required."
and
"There are some progressive scan TV and HDTV sets that are not fully compatible with this DVD system, resulting in the unnatural picture when playing back a DVD VIDEO disc in the progrerssive scan mode."
Apparently it depends on the TV rather than on the system.

I just bought the Philips 5960 over the weekend for roughly $75. It looks good and works much better than my old 642. The ony thing I can't figure out is how to get the upscaling option on this thing to kick in. Its stuck on 480p which I could get out of my component video alone. I have a Monster HDMI to DVI cable to my HDTV set but no joy in upscaling.
Anyone think this is a defective unit or is it just compatability with my HDTV? I own a Olevia Syntax 26" (for the bedroom).
One thing I do love about the 5960 is the USB port up front. I can connect my 30G iPod Photo to it and it'll read the DivX files from there without a hitch!
UPDATE--
So I searched and searched and fell upon a thread from another forum and found out that the upscaling only works on a HDTV with an HDMI input. Sounds strange and yet almost everyone was skeptical when the poster quoted the Philips tech that he/she called into. I was right about to send my back but wanted to verify this first.
I took the player to a try on a HDTV set at a friend's house and sure enough, the upscaling worked. I didn't get a 'not HD compliant' message on my screen yet no upscaling. This leads me to believe that the DRM was working in my favor but yet something in the player didn't like the DVI input on the tv (maybe searching for the audio connections that are void in the DVI input???).
Unless someone else got it to work on a DVI input HDTV set, I'm of the opinion that DVI inputs will not allow upscaling on this unit.

I don't own one yet, but according to a post on Amazon.com, you can do this:
To make it region code free follow these instruction:
1. Turn on the unit
2. Open the loading tray
3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
6. Press the down arrow once to enter the Preference page
5. Enter 138931 on the remote
6. You will now see the current region code displayed
7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
8. Press the "Play" button on the remote
...please reply back and let me know if this actually works! :)

Hi,
The 3040 has a problem with some video files looking "stuttery". It was posted on another board that:
As far as a I know, it is the *combination* of both packed bitstream and 2 consequtive b-frames that cause the problem with mediatek-based chipsets.
Since the 5140 has the same chipset, I'm trying to find out if this problem exists with that player as well, before purchasing one. I've seen the problem first hand on the 3040, but am hoping it is solved with the 5140. Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

I just bought one of these puppies last night.(5140). Does anyone know the max sustainable video bitrate this thing will play? I have LOTs of avi's I've encoded using "unlimited" settings instead of HDTV or A5.
What about bitrate deviation & recovery rate? (prolly better to answer this one myself by simply trying one, .. I'll let you guys know if its apparent that it's an issue.)
Also, Where could I get more info on this DIVX ULTRA stuff?
The 1st I heard of it was reading the manual for my 5140 last night. Divx menus?? Really? Dvd style selection of chapters, audio & so forth?? AND it does not support MKV?.. (Well, I wasn't expecting it to..), But all the features described for this -divx ultra- thing sounds like Mkv.

FYI, Walmart cut prices recently, this unit now sells for $49.96.
I also saw a Maganavox MWD7006 for $25 in store, but online it's still $37.73. The reviews (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=7091&Search=Search)aren't as good for this unit (problems with divx on +R, MP3 playback, subtitle support, mixing MPEG2/4 on a single disc) but basic Divx playback looks very solid considering the price.
Unfortunately, both units were sold out at my local store. Might as well wait for Black Friday anyway.

Here is my review of the player after one week usage.
I purchased this player after reading reviews on videohelp.com, and in Amazon also. It's price in my country is very expensive comparing with Amazon or any other place. It cost me 91$, but I had no choice, as here every thing is expensive specially electronics. In addition to that, when purchasing from the net, cost of shipment will be around 40$, so buying from local market if the item exists is better.
The player is China Made, and it's labeled DVP 5140K/03, with a Karaoke input.
I tired few divx/xvid files and it plays them very well, subtitles in SRT format is ok. I did not try Arabic subtitle yet, the player does not have Arabic menu, so I guess it will not play right to left languages with the existing firmware. On the other hand, it plays Arabic subtitles decoded/embedded in avi files (Divx Ultra feature!).
The firmware comes with the player is V. 98.06.20.08 and it is already region free (set to region 0). I tried region 1 and 2 DVDs and, it played them fine.

I got one of these at Staples On-Line a few months ago. I only paid $42.xx for it by the way.
It's slightly slower to turn on because it's got some kind of Standby/On button instead of just an On button and it takes a bit longer to get it on but not a big deal.
I've been backing up some movies on Memorex +R DL media and it's been playing them all, whereas my older Panasonic S35 has only played one out of the thirteen DL backups I've made so far.

Very nice review. There's also a spec comparison at Philips website (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/catalog/catalog.jsp?navigationValues=HOME_ENTERTAINMENT_GR_CA_CONSUMER%25DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA_CA_CONSUMER&compare=true&productIds=DVP642_37_CA_CONSUMER%25DVP5140_37_CA_CONSUMER%25&language=en&country=CA&catalogType=CONSUMER&productId=&productId=). It's odd that DVP642 plays mp4 while DVP5140 does not. Other features that are found in DVP642 but missing in DVP5140 are: Video Upsampling, Multi-format Music, and Smart Picture; whatever the hell those are... Or maybe Philips website isn't updated with the full specs yet.

It's odd that DVP642 plays mp4 while DVP5140 does not. Most (if not all) versions of MediaTek's MT1389xx range of chip-set's supports the MP4 container (along with AAC audio). And would require little work to make them Nero Digital compatible!
That said, somehow I can't see DivX/DXN being very enthusiastic at having DivX Ultra Certified devices supporting Nero Digital Certified implementations too.... That would be far too sensible and consumer friendly :scared:

I've had one of these players for a few weeks now and I have run into one problem.
When playing a UDF DVD with a video clip that is over 2Gb in size, the player will stop playing the video clip very close to the 1Gb mark. In my case I had a 2 hour clip that was slightly over 2Gb and it wouldn't play beyond 1 hour. I created other clips that experienced the exact same issue. I can fast forward beyond this point but as soon as I press play or OK to stop fast forwarding, the player will stop playing the movie and boot me out to the menu. This does not happen with a movie burned onto an ISO. Here's the combinations I tried and the results:
2Gb+ AVI, UDF 1.02 = stops at 1Gb mark
2Gb+ AVI, UDF 2.01 = stops at 1Gb mark
1.5 Gb AVI, ISO = no problem
1.3 Gb AVI, UDF 1.02 = no problem
1.3 Gb AVI, UDF 2.01 = no problem
The 2Gb AVIs were created using Avi-Mux GUI and the 1.3 Gb ones were created in VDubMod by direct stream copy from the original 2Gb AVI.
I don't remember the firmware version I used but it was bought in U.S. in April 2007 and has stock firmware.
Another question? Does anyone know if the crappy menu system is resolved in an updated firmware? I usually name my video clips with quite long file names depending on when I recorded the video, where I recorded it and who I am filming it about, so it sucks only being able to see a small subset of this :-(

AVI-Mux GUI has a habit of generating "Multipart Open DML" or "OpenDML version 1" .AVI muxes....
I suggest you try running your 2GB+ files thru' MPEG4 Modifier. As it's able to generate MPEG-4 .AVI's to the more robust "OpenDML version 2" standard.

Can't VirtualDub and VDubMod create OpenDML 2 files anyway? I think VirtualDub 1.7 can....

Thanks for the tip. The GSpot information on the AVI as created by Avi-Mux is as follows:
File Length Correct
DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
Multipart OpenDML AVI (4 parts), "rec list" style
(226 frames in first part, 199895 frames follow)
Interleave: 776 ms (18.6 v.frames), preload=1632
Audio frames: Aligned on interleaves
The GSpot information on the AVI as created by MPEG4Modifier CL v1.4.4 with the command line: mmcl --always-write input.avi output.avi produces the following:
File Length Correct
DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
Multipart OpenDML AVI (2 parts)
(186965 frames in first part, 13156 frames follow)
Interleave: 904 ms (21.7 v.frames), preload=1632
Audio frames: Aligned on interleaves
So it's still a Multipart OpenDML AVI but with fewer parts?? I don't have access to my DVD player to try this out right now but I will check if I have better luck with this AVI tonight.
Forget avimux and use virtualdubmod.
enjoy,
Mtz

Processing my AVIs through MPEG4Modifier did the trick. Thanks for the advice (and thanks to Moitah for the tool!).

"video resolution not supported"
The audio plays, but the video doesn't. Is this because of a hardware limitation?
Using mpeg4modifier didn't help.
before:
Note: 412 bytes unneeded bytes at end of file
DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
AVI v1.0
Interleave: 1 vid frame (42 ms)
Audio frames: Split across interleaves
Video: 1.14 GB (86.31%)
Audio: 176 MB (13.06%)
AVI Overhead: 8.48 MB (0.63%)
After:
File Length Correct
OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
Interleave: 1 vid frame (42 ms)
Audio frames: Split across interleaves
Video: 1.14 GB (86.31%)
Audio: 176 MB (13.06%)
AVI Overhead: 8.49 MB (0.63%)

bolke, I am sure someone will be able to explain exactly what's wrong. I don't know enough but I use the following app:
AVI ReComp
http://www.videopedia.pl/avirecomp/news.php
Converts all those stubborn files for playback on my Phillips. It may not be the answer your looking for but I thought I would throw it out there for you, good luck.

"video resolution not supported"

Using mpeg4modifier didn't help.
The resolution of the movie is higher than 720x576.
Because of this you have only audio.
Is a hardware limitation. Your player will never play files with High Definition.
mpeg4modifier can't help. Also AviRecomp can't.
Recode your movie using for example AutoGK.
enjoy,

TCrowe and Mtz, thank you both for the answer. I appreciate it. :thanks:
I understand what the problem is now.
The resolution is 768 x 432.

This player won't play Verbatim +R DL disks that I've burned lately.
It's a couple of years old now. Is this just due to it's age? I see I posted above it used to play my Memorex +R DLs.
I just checked the specs on this unit on CDFreaks and it doesn't even list DLs as being playable.

^they play mine just fine. try running yours under cold water and drying in an outword direction with a scratch-free fabric. sounds crazy, but this trick has always worked for me without doing damage to the disc.
