Greetings to all,
I have recently upgraded my computer to a Duron 900 and changed my OS to Win2K.
However after the upgrade, I have discovered that when I burn 650MB CD-R, it takes double the time to burn 1 CD. (40 minutes) My burner is a 4x burner and usually it only takes about 20 minutes to finish burning a 650MB CD-R. I use Nero to burn my CDs and they show the burn process to be at 4x but it doesn't seem that way.
While burning 700MB CD-Rs, I do not encounter this problem at all and is able to burn my CD in 20 minutes time. I have updated my burner's BIOS but still the problem persists. I have even tried using various brands but the results are the same.
The 650MB CD-Rs I use do support up to 12x burning but I do not understand why this is happening.
Thank you for your time in reading this.

Please ensure that DMA is enabled as win2k disables it by default.
System->Device Manager->Primary and Secondary IDE channels.

I have checked my DMA settings and they have already been enabled into Ultra DMA and DMA modes.

perhaps a newer firmware for your burner will solve this problem

Tried that too, I updated my firmware to the latest version but sadly the problem still presists.

U should try Force ASPI drivers from the download page.

In reply to UHT's question :
I'm using Nero and CloneCD.
Nero's version is 5.5.4.0 and CloneCD is 3.0.9.1.
In reply to mustaneekeri's suggestion :
I have tried using the Force ASPI drivers already, however it doesn't seem to be able to solve my problem.

You say your 700 MB CDRs work fine but your 650s record slow. This sounds like a media problem to me. I'm not sure how burners figure out what speed a particular inserted CDR or CDRW supports, but they do. I've even seen Nero change speeds on a CDRW halfway through 'due to media' (that's what Nero says).
Perhaps you have a bad batch of 12x 74 min CDRs (or have hit a bad stretch in an otherwise good batch) that the burner has decided is unreliable above 2x.

I do hope it's this way cos I have tried and tested various brands and speeds of 650MB CD-Rs but they all return with the same burning time.

I have recently been trying out one of Nero's tools call CD Speed and to my horror, discovered that my writer speed was set to 2x !!!
Does anyone know how to reset/set the speed back to 4x ?
Attached is a picture I took of the information screen.

Are you talking about Drivespeed? This sets your drive's _reading_ speed ... CD Speed is more like a benchmarking program ... neither of the two should set your drive's _writing_ speeds.
Wish Ahead had picked more unequivocal names for their tools, I confuse them all the time.

I was using CD Speed, the benchmarking tool. Their information screen showed my writer has been set to 2x writing speed.
I wish to know whether is there any program or ways to set the speed back to 4x.
