Walmart is carrying the new RCA DRC255N for $50
it's got mpeg4, memory stick slots, HDMI and upscaling - but what chipset, anyone know?

added: apparently RCA is not listed under divx certified at all, so there is a question as to the playback quality - or maybe they just won't pay for certification, I dunno

And yes as far as I know, it does cost manufacturers money to obtain DivX certification, use DivX's logo and even mention the word DivX in any of their promotional documentation and/or player manuals.

Cheers

Well I am biased against players that are not "divx certified" because I bought a Coby "mpeg4 capable" player that didn't actually say "divx" and it does not have any smooth playback at all on most clips. But that may just be coby's lack of quality in general.

I would suspect Divx charges. It's typically how the industry works and I may have read something to that effect... I am not sure how much divx charges for certification so maybe there actually is a decent mpeg4 player out there that doesn't want to pay extra.

Apparently the chipset itself can be divx certified while a player might not be:

At the end of the day, as long as you buy a player fitted with a well featured chip-set manufactured by either MediaTek, Sigma or Vaddis you should'nt have much trouble playing MPEG-4 (ISO/IEE) video streams.

Provided of-course the player manufacturer has not cocked up the players firmware and your MPEG-4 video streams have been correctly encoded.

As I've said many times before, don't buy cheap players nobody has ever heard of. You don't have to spend alot more money to obtain a player with a well respected name or reputation... not to mention firmware upgrades/customer support!

Of course DivX charges! They are using our name to sell their devices, after all.

Indeed... most probably down to poor firmware and really cheap chip-sets!

That's exactly the kind of things DivX Certification prevents. :o

I'm not denying the merits of DivX Certification back in the early days when MPEG-4 chip-sets and players were taking off.

But any of todays well known/respected MPEG-4 ISO/IEE compatible players (fitted with the prior mentioned chip-sets) should be able to play MPEG-4 video streams generated with DivX's DivX5 (UserData Numbered) encoder, as a bear minimum, with or without a DivX Certified logo!

That said, if people want to have a player that supports DivX Create encodes along with all the features offered by your .divx file extension, then they'll have to keep a look out for your DivX Ultra Certified players...

I think we basically agree, that very sophisticated users (who are even aware of chips and chipsets) can probably find bottomline MPEG4 playback without a DivX logo. That said, I think that's a relatively small number, and a lot of users just want to know their device will play DivX, no questions asked. Not to mention the other features of DivX certification...

Ultra devices are coming. I believe the Philips device is already on the market. It's a good inexpensive player.

I have 2 DivX players able to play DMF. Medion 80796 and E-Boda DV 555X (sold only in Romania), both with MTK chipsets. The Medion have some problems because of menu buttons and divx subtitles (xsub) which are displayed moved to the left (firmware bug) and also Philips 5140 have this bug as somebody reported.
The E-Boda have no problems and even it can display audio and subtiltes tags (even them are not correct because of some minor bug in the firmware which can be easy solved at least for subtitles).
Regarding "certifieding", I think the problems with the players are not from DivX company or labelling the player with DivX or not: the problems are in the firmware, because chinese are stupid. I saw some old versions of firmware in which they solved some bugs and not applying the solved problems in some new firmwares.

enjoy,
Mtz

Walmart (in-store, not the website) has the Philips 5140 (http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/catalog/catalog.jsp?fhquery=fh_secondid%3Ddvp5140_37_us_consumer%26fh_location%3D%2F%2Fconsumer%2Fen_US%2Fcategories%3Ccatalog_us_consumer%2Fcategories%3Chome_audio_video_gr_us_consumer%2Fcategories%3Cdvd_players_recorders_ca_us_consumer%26&productId=DVP5140_37_US_CONSUMER&activeCategory=HOME_AUDIO_VIDEO_GR_US_CONSUMER&fredhopperpage=detail.jsp&activeTab=features&language=en&country=US&catalogType=CONSUMER) for about $55 US.

From my look at the display unit when I was shopping earlier this week, the design's kind of ugly... but of course, it has a nicer feature set than the 642 it (presumably) replaces.
