Going nuts trying to figure out what's wrong? Maybe it's your burner software, but how do you know? OK, so Derrow and I have found out some things about the disk formats, and I came up with some very short test files. If they don't work, nothing will (and you need to hunt for software)
They can be found at DVD Burner Test Files (http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/burner_tests.html)

Passed:
NERO 5.5.6.4 on HP DVD100i and Pioneer A03
RecordNow Max from Veritas on HP DVD100i and Pioneer A03
VOB Instant CD with latest update on Pioneer A03

Others: let us know by posting here, include software, burner, and OS

Thanks for one more result. I have re-made the tests so they are even smaller, about 400K (at above link). Also working on a chart of what we know does and does not work.

i noticed you have the file "video_ts.ifo" in both the root and the VIDEO_TS directory.
is that necessary for a final burn?...to have this file in both the root and the directory?
i'll give it a try upon response to this question....

using panasonic external firewire burner on xp

Thanks. But for a moment I thought I left out the readme explaining the extra files. They are there so you can replace 2 files in the folder for a "gapless" burn.

Hi, mpucoder,

thank you very much for uploading the image. It helped me a lot to find a good setting for my new Ricoh DVD+RW MP5120A burner. I used B's recorder gold for creating the DVD+RWs.

Now my question: The image burned with the different ECC codes worked on my standalone Kenwood player. If I replace the 2 files with the two other files, it does not work on my Kenwood player.

What's the difference with the files containing the different ECC codes and the other ones? Why does it work in the first case and not in the second one on my Kenwood player? BTW, both versions work on my Toshiba DVD PC drive.

Regards
DJans

They're not codes, but a physical layout of the files. DVD groups 16 sectors together for error correction purposes. Some pre-mastering programs are aware of that and make sure that the ifo and bup files do not occupy the same ECC block. Afterall, if the block is unreadable, then both copies are gone.

I'm not sure what you mean by "B's recorder gold", but it has the problem that these files were designed to find. Could you be more specific about the burner sodtware name?

Now, the technical stuff. The original files in the folder place the ifo and bup files into different ECC blocks by a commonly accepted method of adding a 16 sector padding area after video_ts.vob. The replacement files do not use this padding area, but place the files adjacent to each other.

What does it test? If it works in one case and not the other (no matter which) then your burner software is making assumptions about the layout, and not reading the contents of the ifo files to place things where they should be. In your case, the software assumed there would be padding.

The tests only matter to standalone players, as they use the ifo pointers being tested, whereas software players use the file system pointers.

The software is "B's recorder gold V3.15". It was enclosed with my Ricoh MP5120A DVD+RW burner.

In the software there can be set a "Emphasizes reading compatibility on a DVD player". I think that if this check box is marked the burner software places the data where it should be placed.

I will make some more tests and write some more information here.
