Since I'm dont like wasting space and dont want to lower the movie quality I came up with the idea to burn 2 movies on 3 DVD-s.
Most movies are less then 6GB in size so if you take 3 DVD-5 you get a bit more than 13GB of space in total(that should be more than enought for 2 movies).

The idea is to split 2 movies in a way that the first part of each occupies one full disc while the 2 remaining parts get burned together on one disc.

Features that I want are pretty basic - only the main movie without any trailers,FBI warnings, extras and other crap but with the menu option to choose one subtitle on/off and in case of animations also aditional menu option of choosing alternative audio stream(animation usualy gets aditonal audio translation in my country).

So this is how I'd like my process of backing up to look like :
1.Ripping a DVD with a tool that can choose only the features that I want and can in that process split a DVD in two separate parts on HD.(this is done for 2 movies)
2.A tool that can put two different movie parts on one DVD - this would require creation of adittional menu - so needs some authoring.

Which tools do you recomend for each job and can it be done the way I'd like or do I have to first RIP the whole movie on a HD then split it and then author it (this would require 2x the space)??

I'v split 1 movie on 2 DVD-s but one doesnt realy have much control over that process and waistes lot of DVD space.

To rip the three DVD's onto the hard disk, I would use either DVD Decrypter or DVDFAB Decrypter. You can use DVD SHrink to make the actual discs. It also requires burning with something like Nero or DVD Decrypter/Imgburn using ISO images.

DVD Shrink has a reauthor mode so it is possible to select just the movie and then use start and end function to split the DVD where you want.

Some guides.

The most professional DVD re-compiling application is DVD Remake Pro. It even manages to split/join multi-angle DVDs, a thing which makes DVD Shrink go crazy and , with respect DVD Shrink which can't add them on Re-author mode (but only on 'full disc' mode), allows also to put in the backup DVDs the extras (you could put all extras of the 1st DVD on DVDb_1 and all extras of DVD2 on DVDb_3, for instance).

DVD Remake Pro is very professional; you can even easily add (after a certain movie chapter, before stoppping the disc) a VOB contaning the screen "Please insert next DVD", which will be shown at the end of the first DVDs. But, alas, you won't be able to to anything, with the free demo.

Try it. It's the most powerful tool to use.

It is a excellent program but, it is not free and requires purchasing it to see the results as there is no fully functional trial.

The demo version will let you do all you want - just will cut each chapter at 15 seconds on export.

I know. That is why I don't think of it as fully functional as you are limited on the results. The software is worth the money but some people may want to see complete results first.

'Free' and 'best tool to use' aren't often coincident.

If you don't care about extras, I think that a plain DVD5 containing the main movie only doesn't waste too much quality, once you select its two speed-decreasing options 'perform deep scanning' and '[?] correction (sharp)'.

Otherwise, if you appreciate the quality saving but you don't care about extras (and you want a free tool), using the free DVD Shrink cutting the main movie only, is an excellent alternative (use the startsnd button on the left of the window).
You'll only able to cut the main movie, but you'll do what you want, with the main movie only.

Otherwise, purchase an expensive double-layer DVD (I assume your recorder can already burn them)....
