Sorry i didnt know where to put this. I have some HD footage and i was wondering if it was at all possible to author a 720p DVD-5 so that it will play on a HD-DVD player?

Nope, you would need an HD DVD burner...and they cost thousands of dollars and I'm not even certain if they are publicly released yet.

It can be done. See this thread on AVSForum:

Your content must be 720p@59.94 or 720p@50. HDV content from the JVC camcorder at 720p@29.97 will not work since that format is not part of the HD-DVD specification.

I have been following that thread and it is definately a good start, the only problem is that so far the only success has been achieved by using mpeg2 HD files allowing for only about 20 minutes of HD video on a single layer DVD. A few people have tried recording H264 HD clips but no success so far getting it to play on a stand alone HD-DVD player.

Oh you're talking about putting HD on a DVD....in that case it can be done.

By the way, are there any other programs besides Ulead?

the hd dvd specs indeed also include normal dvd discs, so no need for a hd dvd burner

Wow I feel like total noob not knowing that...but I don't really deal with HD and I don't even have an HDTV so I have very little interaction with HD stuff....

So if I have the right software, I can already burn HD-DVD?

Since no HD-DVD burners exist, no.

So if I have the right software, I can already burn HD-DVD?Yeah.... sort of. You can author an HD DVD (.EVB and .IFO files if I'm not mistaking) and burn it to a normal DVD. It will not be a *real* HD DVD but the disc structure is the same.

what the hell?

the hd dvd specs include dvd resolution streams burned on normal dvds (yeah that would still be "hd dvd" compliant)

so with the right software you can create a compliant hd dvd with a normal dvd burner
